  • hair growth for toddler?

We picked up our adopted daughter from an orphangae about 4 months ago and are letting her hair grow long. Her original bangs are now several inches long. A few weeks ago, we noticed a distinct new wave of bangs on her forehead...about an inch long now. Does hair normally grow in 'waves' like this, or is this possibly the result of a diet change/improved nutrition?

  • Is a yarrow lawn good for neighbor relations?

We've heard that a yarrow lawn is a 'green' alternative to a traditional lawn...it uses less water and can look nice if mown regularly and cut short. But I've also heard that yarrow is like an invasive weed. If we plan to use the upright variety (vs. the spreading variety)...is there a potential for problems for the surrounding neighborhood? Assuming we cut it before it flowers, can it still proliferate beyond its borders?

  • Which uses more power: a wireless USB mouse, or a wireless bluetooth mouse?

If there is a difference, is it significant? Assuming I get a battery-powered unit (vs. a recharging unit), I will pick the one that requires less battery changing.

    thanks

  • How do you focus on stars?

I am planning to photograph a field of stars with no foreground subject. I have very poor night vision, so I will not be relying on my own ability to focus manually.

My setup will be (and these cannot be changed):

    -shoot wide open at f/2.8

-shoot at widest 16mm setting (Canon 16-35mm)

-high ISO to eliminate star trails

-long exposure, but not enough to make star trails

My DOF calculator says a 16mm lens at f/2.8 has a hyperfocal distance of ~10 feet (everything from 5 feet to infinity is in focus). Now, recalling that I have no foreground subject (or if anything, some hills in the far distance), what would you do and why?

    1) Focus on infinity

    2) Focus a notch under infinity

    3) Focus on the hyperfocal setting of 10 feet

    4) somewhere between 2 and 3

It sounds like it would be hard to make a focusing error here, but I would like maximize lens sharpness.

    thanks in advance

  • Tivo Lifetime Subscriptions on eBay...?

Does anyone know if these eBay sellers who offer Tivo Lifetime subscriptions at discount are legitimate and authentic resales? I want to make sure I am not purchasing a hack service which can get me into trouble.

    thanks

  • Sunglass questions: side protection?

My eyes are apparently very senstive to UV light. My current sunglasses are a 'wrap' style, but still allow a lot of light in from the sides, especially when I am driving.

    1) What are those side visors called...are these attachments or are they typically built into the frame?

    2) Can anyone recommend some sporty sunglasses (make and models) that have excellent side protection? Preferably lightweight with polarizer. And not the kind my grandpa would wear.

    thanks in advance

  • Are potato chips still unhealthy?

Now that most potato chips have no trans fats, no cholesterol, and made with sunflower oil...why else would potato chips still be bad for us?

  • Yoga question...is there a milder version of the downward dog?

I've been told that the 2 poses one should do everyday is the downward dog and the cobra. Does anyone know of a milder substitute for the downward dog for someone who is older, just getting started with yoga, and has weak upper body strength?...forward fold?

  • I would like to replace a drop-in range with a slide-in...?

I currently have a Jenn-air drop-in range. Do I have to choose another drop-in to replace it, or can I also choose from the slide-in ranges? It seems like the only difference is the bottom face across the front...is there something else I should be aware of? Does a drop-in have special support?

    Thanks in advance

  • Organic gnat control in lawn areas?

Is there a way to organically control (get rid of) those tiny lawn gnats that tend to swarm? By organic, I mean by natural pesticides or solutions because I have a vegetable garden very close by. I am in Western California (Southern SF Bay Area.)

  • Honey Bee population decline...is it natural, our own fault, or are we under attack?

Honey Bees appear to be in dramatic decline..perhaps due to pesticides, genetic modifications, or man-made climate change. But does anyone think there might be something more sinister going on such as a subtle sabotage by an adversarial country? If we lose these little guys, we lose most of our food production. What are your thoughts?

  • How much does fossil oil regenerate?

I know we think of fossil fuel as an unrenewable resource, but isn't there a steady stream of biomatter going back into the earth to account for something, however tiny?

  • Steamed Cheesecake?

Does anyone have a recipe for steamed cheesecake that they can share...or at least point me somewhere? These are those light steamed ones that appear in asian markets...they are not as rich and heavy as standard baked cheesecakes, but just as tasty.

  • My dad can get several days of tea out of reusing a single-serve bag. Is this healthy?

Tea bags are intended for single or double use...but milking it for several days worth of tea? This doesn't seem right. Is there anything unhealthy with this?

  • Furnace Noise: My Cold Air Return is noisy...are there grating designs that provide less or no air rush noise?

As cold air returns to the furnace, it passes through the wall grating, which is some sort of a thin vent (louvered) stamped metal. I was just wondering if there are other designs out there that would be quieter in terms of the whistle caused by air going through these thin vents. Of course, it seems like removing the grating would be the quietest, but not very safe or pretty. And does it make any sense to add sound-dampening material in between the grating and the filtered furnace? Thanks in advance.
