Bertrand Russell: Three passions have governed my life: The longings for love, the search for knowledge, And unbearable pity for the suffering of [humankind]. Love brings ecstasy and relieves loneliness. In the union of love I have seen In a mystic miniature the prefiguring vision Of the heavens that saints and poets have imagined. With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of [people]. I have wished to know why the stars shine. Love and knowledge led upwards to the heavens, But always pity brought me back to earth; Cries of pain reverberated in my heart Of children in famine, of victims tortured And of old people left helpless. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, And I too suffer. This has been my life; I found it worth living.

I'm looking for a solution for how to handle employees who don't follow the rules. I don't want to fire them or punish them in anyway. What do you recommend?

  • Do you think an 11 yr old should be required to carry a purse?

My ex and I are having a disagreement about this. He has grounded my daughter for not carrying a purse (one of his house rules). Although I agree she should be punished for breaking the rule, I don't think that she should be required to carry a purse. Just wondered about other people's thoughts on this issue.

His side: she'll have to carry one eventually anyway, and this will help train her to do that. It's a sign of responsibility and organization. This is one of the steps towards womanhood and she has to make it now.

My side: we females have to deal with enough stuff (hormones, breasts, periods, makeup and hair issues that straight guys never have to think about, depilation, etc) without forcing purses on us too. Purses are optional and can be fun, but not if forced on us. If she can be organized and complete without it, why force her?

  • How to stop my sister from allowing her son to shower with her...?

My nephew is 5 years old, and IMO he is too old to bathe with a female, but my sister allows him to bathe with his sister (10) and occasionally showers with him herself. I've told her before that I strongly disagree with this. Should I just butt out or is there some way to convince her it is wrong?

  • Looking for the name of a book (historical romance)...?

I don't remember the author, the publisher, or the publish date. I read it maybe 10 years ago (give or take). The main character's name is Charlotte. It is an historical romance, and sort of epic - I can't remember where/when it begans (somewhere in Ameria), but the main character ends up going to Canada, is forced to marry an Indian, and ends up with her love in New Orleans during the War of 1812. Sorry for the sketchy details, any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!

  • Do Muslims tell each other "happy al Hijra" or something like that?

I understand today is al Hijra. Do Muslims tell each other something particular, like we do for the gregorian new year (Happy New Year)? How do you say it in Arabic (phonetically)? Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • Do you agree with this statement:?

"Rationalists are admirable beings, but rationalism is a hideous monster when it claims for itself omnipotence. Attribution of omnipotence to reason is as bad a piece of idolatry as is worship of a stick and stone believing it to be God."

    Why or why not?

  • Question about Talmud (previous question deleted)?

I am not trying to be offensive in this question, I really want to disprove the anti-semitic talk about the Talmud being racist. My previous question was deleted. What I want to know is this: where can I find English translations for those passages that the anti-semitic websites say are racist (and which Jewish people say are translated incorrectly or completely false), for example :

"The Jews are called human beings, but the non-Jews are not humans. They are beasts."

    Talmud: Baba mezia, 114b

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The Akum (non-Jew) is like a dog. Yes, the scripture teaches to honour the the dog more than the non-Jew."

    Ereget Raschi Erod. 22 30

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Even though God created the non-Jew they are still animals in human form. It is not becoming for a Jew to be served by an animal. Therefore he will be served by animals in human form."

    Midrasch Talpioth, p. 255, Warsaw 1855

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"A pregnant non-Jew is no better than a pregnant animal."

    Coschen hamischpat 405

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The souls of non-Jews come from impure sprits and are called pigs."

    Jalkut Rubeni gadol 12b

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Although the non-Jew has the same body structure as the Jew, they compare with the Jew like a monkey to a human."

    Schene luchoth haberith, p. 250 b

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"If you eat with a Gentile, it is the same as eating with a dog."

    Tosapoth, Jebamoth 94b

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"If a Jew has a non-Jewish servant or maid who dies, one should not express sympathy to the Jew. You should tell the Jew: "God will replace 'your loss', just as if one of his oxen or asses had died"."

    Jore dea 377, 1

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Sexual intercourse between Gentiles is like intercourse between animals."

    Talmud Sanhedrin 74b

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"It is permitted to take the body and the life of a Gentile."

    Sepher ikkarim III c 25

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"It is the law to kill anyone who denies the Torah. The Christians belong to the denying ones of the Torah."

    Coschen hamischpat 425 Hagah 425. 5

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"A heretic Gentile you may kill outright with your own hands."

    Talmud, Abodah Zara, 4b

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Every Jew, who spills the blood of the godless (non-Jews), is doing the same as making a sacrifice to God."

    Talmud: Bammidber raba c 21 & Jalkut 772

Please don't delete/report my question. I am pro-Palestinian, but I am after the truth. I can't stand hatred or racism from anyone directed to anyone. If these passages are false, please provide me a link to the correct translations.

  • Atheists, aren't you tired...?

of people thinking that you don't believe in religion because you want to be able to do "sinful" acts? That is wrong on so many levels:

    1) people who think that are saying they would be immoral too if not for religion

    2) there are plenty of religious people who do commit sins and they don't have the excuse of not believing

    3) religion doesn't make morality, personal judgment does - and this can be formed outside of religion

    4) not all (and probably not many) atheists are hedonists just looking for a good time

I'm not an atheist but I get tired of seeing Christians and other theists using this cop-out to explain why you are an atheist. What do you think?

  • Are Palestinians supporters falling for the bull from Netanyahu and if so, WHY?

Seriously, he is saying he "endorses" an independent Palestinian state if:

    1) they have no military

    2) Israel has control of the borders

    3) Israeli settlements in the would-be area of Palestine would remain

    4) Palestinian refugees would have to renounce all claims to the property they owned in the so-called state of Israel

With these conditions, how could Netanyahu say, with a straight face, that he endorses an independent Palestinian state when instead he is asking Palestinians to agree to the way things are now with the only change being they could actually legally call themselves Palestinians?

Are any of the Palestinian supporters actually falling for this? If so, WHY?

  • What do you call a really tall table?

It's solid wood and has one of those leaves where you can make it wider. Without the leaf it is square, with the leaf it is a rectangle. It's about 4 feet tall. Is this a dining room table? If not, what would you call it? I want to place a classified ad to sell it but not sure what to name it...

My friend has a theory that atheists are generally unhappy, and that they will not be able to achieve happiness while denying their spirituality and staying disconnected from God. I have to admit that most of the atheists I know are unhappy. What do you think?

  • Ramadan: Do you think some in this section are posing as Muslims...?

Ramadan: Do you think some in this section are posing as Muslims so they can spread filth and perpetuate the haters of Islam and of Muslims? I thought the only people who believed in terrorism and suicide bombing were brainwashed and uneducated, but I have seen some on here that are very much in favor of these things. I would assume that anyone with access to the internet has at least some level of education and has the ability to learn more about the world, so that they should be able to counteract any brainwashing with minimal effort. I am not Muslim (my husband is), but I have read the Quran and I have seen how all the Muslims I know live their lives, and they are not the fanatical "kill all infidels" that many portray them as. There are good and bad among them, as in any culture, but overall they are God fearing and cherish the sanctity of life. So what do you think, are those that promote suicide bombing here in this section posers, or are there many thinking, educated Muslims that agree with this tactic?
