I am a teacher in Southern California and I have 2 Portuguese Water Dogs who are the center of my universe!

  • Cooling mats for dogs?

I have two Portuguese Water Dogs who hate to be hot. Unfortunately, that is a fact of life where we live during the summer. I've seen that you can buy various types of mats/beds that claim to keep the dog cool--which would be great because my girl has a horrible time sleeping when she's warm. Has anyone tried any of these? Any recommendations or warnings? Thanks!

  • marine hermit crab help?

My husband has a marine hermit crab that was getting ready to molt. Unfortunately, our son was the first one home and picked up the exoskeleton-not thinking that the crab would need it or that the crab might still be attached in some places. Consequently, the crab lost a number of legs and the smaller claw. Worse yet, he threw the exoskeleton away! I've been feeding the crab egg shell, cuttle bone and silver side pieces using a long pair of tongs. It's been a couple of weeks and he seems fine, but still must be hand fed as he cannot get around. Does this poor guy stand a chance? I've grown quite attached to him through all of this!

  • Help with new kittens?

So, here's the situation. We adopted a kitten about 10 weeks ago--a girl. One of her brothers was just returned and we picked him up today. They were close as young litter mates, but have been apart for the past couple months. They are now 18 weeks old and seeing each other for the first time since being separated. The boy has outgrown the girl by quite a bit and he is really open to being friends with his sister. Our girl, however, is not welcoming. My husband is freaking out saying it will never work - but I think that it's way too soon to make that judgement. Any thoughts?

  • Good nail grinder for large dogs?

I have two Portuguese Water Dogs that I groom at home. I've got a great clipper! Now I'm looking for a nail grinder that can handle hard nails. My boy has nails that resist clipping and grinding.

  • cat aggressive towards dogs?

I just adopted a little one year old calico. She was sick at first and very docile. But she is fully recovered now and it becoming increasingly aggressive towards my two 50 pound cat-friendly dogs. Tonight she ran down the hall at them. I saw that look in her eyes and shoved them in the bedroom. She tried to jump on one of their faces, so I slammed the door. She then hissed and continued to stick her feet under the door. I've NEVER seen a cat like this. She's wonderful with people, but she is fearless and aggressive with my dogs. I'm afraid she will either put out one of their eyes or scare them so badly that they will hurt her. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will NOT take her back to the pound. No way. But I'm really worried about this.

  • new cat not using litter box?

I just brought home a female (about 9 months) kitten from the local animal regulation. They spayed her once I committed to taking her and she came home yesterday. Her appetite is good and she is warming up slowly, but I can see no evidence of her using the litter box. I'm using paper in the box because of her incision, but I'm wondering if that could be the problem. Maybe she's never been exposed to anything other than clumping litter and it just isn't familiar. I should say that I'm not seeing any evidence of her going anywhere else and it has only been a little over 24 hours since her surgery. I've had an abundance of cats in my life, but I've never had this issue. Any ideas?

  • What are rats like as pets?

I've been considering getting a rat as a pet. I had a couple of hamsters as a child and although I was never bitten by them, I did find them to be a bit irritable (except for one-who was a love). I've heard that rats make wonderful, affectionate pets. What can you tell me about them. Any recommendations in terms of variety, male, female! Thanks for your thoughts!
