  • Oil fired boiler ( hot water not steam ) question.?

I have a oil fired hot water boiler system. All my thermostats are set to off. All the zone valves are closed. Yet when i checked on my boiler the circulator was running. Is this normal? It seems weird to me that it would be running. I would expect if a zone was open or a zone was calling for heat that it would run but not when all the zones are closed and none of the thermostats are calling for heat.

  • What is a efficient yet low cost hot water option?

I currently have a tankless hot water coil in my oil fired hot water boiler. I have read that outside the heating season this kind of setup is only about 20% efficient ( what a waste. ). I have read up on some of the newer systems and such and i know there are new very efficient solutions out there. However the costs are near insanity and the benefits seem marginal by comparison. When i look at the time it takes for a return on investment and it is in the 10 year mark it makes these new solutions very unapealing.

So am i right in thinking that a new 50 gallon electric hot water tank would be much more efficient? I would consider propane / nat gas but my wife hates that idea.

Also what would be better draining the hot water coil once i have the tank or keeping water in the coil?

  • My toilet flushes on its own. Any idea how i can fix this?

This problem has been going on for almost a year now. Since i discovered this problem i have replaced all the internal parts of the toilet. The flapper the fill control thing the handle pretty much everything inside the toilet bowl that can be replaced including the fill tube it all mounts on.

Despite this the toilet still likes to flush itself every now and then. I cant really say there is any pattern to it and as far as i can tell there is no clogs in the toilet or even a slow leak from the bowl. I still use the toilet regularly because unless i catch it just after it flushed it works just fine.

Any ideas what would cause it to flush by itself?

  • Tankless system or hot water tank system?

I have a tankless oil powered hot water heater / boiler system. I did an online energy assessment and according to it i burn 80% of the fuel i use per year just heating up water for hot water. Would something like a hybrid water heater be a more efficient way to make hot water?

  • Tankless hot water or new hybrid hot water tank?

I have a tankless hot water setup right now. I am trying to figure out if it would be beneficial to switch to a hybrid hot water tank. My household consists of 4 1 full time mom me and 2 kids under 5. When i use one of those online energy audits it points out over 80% of my fuel usage is for hot water.

  • Home insulation advice?

I have a home built in the late 70's there is insulation in the walls and ceiling. I think about 4 inches thick. There is NO attic none at all the ceiling is vaulted to give very high interior space. The insulation in the ceiling is about the same as the walls about 4 inches or so.

What are my options to increase the insulation? I know we could take down the interior walls and re-insulate with better material but i would love to hear other effective options.

i live in SE MA (fall river / taunton are the two closest cities to me)

  • Why did my fish die BTW i am 30 plus?

I had 4 small fish forgot what kind they were but they were tropical fish the tank is a 2.5 gallon cube tank. I of course feed them and such but they only lived about 2 months the ph of the tank has been 6.8 and a steady temp of 78. I did not have a ai block to aerate the tank but the filter i have work by air where the air pumps in the bottom and forces water up through the filter. Was that simply not enough air in the water?

  • Aquastat help looking for a aquastat that will close contacts when it is below set point.?

I have a boiler that is not inside the house (it is in a room attached to the house that does not have heat just electricity) I am trying to find a aquastat that will turn on if temps drop below set point. I can find millions of aquastats that turn on when temps raise to a set point but not for a freeze protection like this.

  • Boiler investment / saveings / green incentive.?

sat down and crunched the numbers. Assuming absolutly no inflation on oil price and pellet prices (there typically is far less increase in pellet price per year then oil per year) the saveings is amazing. I first found the btu per gal of oil (140000) the btu of wood pellets per pound (8200) then figured that i use 800 gallons of oil per year (112000000 BTU) and figured that comes to be 13658.53 lbs of pellts a year which is 6.82 tons (using a 2000lbs ton) the price of HHO is 3.90/gal where i am which is 3120/year at 800 gallons wood is 245 per ton so thats 1670.

I am thinking about installign a pellet boiler in tandem with my oil boiler. However i am graduating with a BS in networking next year and the VA will be assisting me with job placement meaning i might end up with a great job but i might have to move to get the job. Is something like a new boiler like this one going to tangabally increase the value of the home?

  • Home heating question.?

I know this sounds crazy but....

With oil the price it is and all I am considering modifing my heating. I currently have a oil burner forced hot water system and the same boiler provides my household hot water (so both heating and hot water come from a oil burner) I am burning nearly 100gallons per 12 days or so.I am considering adding a on demand electric hot water heater (natural gas and propane are not available in my area not on this scale just the 20lbs bottles for grills) This on demand heater would go inline with the cold water into the boiler and should nearly eliminate the use of oil the burner would only fire up to re-heat water returning from the house. I could also plumb it so the returning water goes into the on demand heater and the boiler would serve mostly as a water circulator.

Anyone know if this is just nuts or would it be more cost effective given home heating oil is over 3$ a gallon.

  • MA Plumbing code question. What materials can be used on drinking water supply? IE copper, brass, PVC?

I need to make some changes to the plumbing in my house. I have 1 inch supply line going into the pressure tank and i need to move things around a bit and i need to add in a sediment filter my dad never cared much about the quality of the water in the house so for all these years there has never been a filter and no problems that i know of. I however take a different aproach to such things and fully intend on haveing at least a good filter to be sure there are no large particles in the water. I have heard i can not use PVC but i have no idea what i can use. Bear in mind i will be using local stores like home depot and lowes for supplies. I also do not own any flareing tools and do not want to do any soldering. I prefer to be able to fix or modify a setup if i need to later rather then cutting everything apart and re-doing it.

i have been reading the code but its not exactly clear to me what can be used.

  • Is sulfer in water dangerous to consume?

I am pretty sure there is sulfer in my water it is well water and it has a sulfer smell to it. I have been pokeing around the state web site to try finding guidelines and information but it has not been a very productive search. I have a inline whole house active carbon filter that should at least be filtering out particulate matter and such but there is still a sulfer smell in the water (like rotten eggs and is just WONDERFUL to smell when takeing a shower)

  • I need to evaluate my home insulation. I know there are dafts and i need to locate and eliminate them.?

The house is nearly 30 years old the walls are finished with paneling and there are some places i can feel a draft but there are no windows near the spots the windows are all high quality newpro windows installed recently. i had a home analyst come check the house out and was somewhat disapoined. He pulled a outlet cover to check for insulation then made a guesstimate of what R value might be in the walls. I was under the impression that they would have set something up to locate drafts and leaks.

Is there anything to detect air leaks so i can figure out if it is something that can be corrected?

  • Is re-Enlistment possible?

I REALLY miss being in the Coast Guard. I was discharged because of a problem i have with my knee. I have heard rumor it is possible for me to re-enlist. I dont quite understand how that would be possible. I don't remember the code on my dd-214 but it is a honarable discharge with medical listed under description. So i did get a fully honarable discharge. I was discharged back in february. I wouldn't mind going in the CG reserves but with my knee i dont think i would ever get through boot if i had to go to boot my run time is through the floor I basically only run now if i was in a burning building But i miss the military a lot.

  • I am into online ateing but yet not into online relationships?

Just how do i go about this? i get very few responses i think because i hate e-relationships. i would much rather get to know someone in person. There is just so much that is not transmitted over the internet when i want to know more about someone i dont want to just read words on a screen i want to see the expresion on there face the tone in there voice there overall attitude if they are being silly flirty or seroiuse. But yet i think because i dont like to waste much time chattering mindlessly with someone online that many women think i am some weirdo trying to meet them to toss them into a river. O also you can expect to NEVER see me at a bar or club loud music and drinking is so not my thing.

  • What is a good strategy to find a nice woman to date?

I am very soon to be out of a semi short marrige via a annulment. I have been paying for yahoo personals and doing what i can to put myself out there and respond to many many other ads. I remember last time i did the personals that it was pretty much the same where next to nobody responds. I think it is just far to easy to reject people via internet. I am 29 right now and i am idealy looking to try finding a nice high quality woman that is not very demanding of materialistic things. I hate the bar scene i am not into drinking and honestly i dont want to date anyone that is a bar fly clubs are just so much worse. I have accually tryed the bowling alley as funny as that is but i noticed pretty quick that the alley seems to be more like a place you bring a date not a place you find one lol. Coffe shops... well I live in MA coffe shops are not public gathering places they are places you juice up on caffeen and start your day.

    Any input is welcome.

  • I am about to go back to school. I have a AS in Electronics I am about to go for a BS in IT (networking end)?

I know it may seem silly but i have not had a job in the electronics field that would pay me more then 27k a year. I live in MA and here that is not a great income not at all. I am going back to school in the hopes of gaining considerbally better employment. I constantly hear 2 sides to the story tho about IT jobs i hear they pay well and i hear that they are constantly being outsourced. Is this going to prove to be a huge waste of money for me? Or will this turn out to be one of my better descisions? I have full confidance i wil do just fine in school. I have yet to fail at anything i put any real effort into.
