  • I need some help with an old book. It appears to be in the wrong binding, but hasn't been rebound.?

I just got an old book. The cover says Aesop's Fables, McLoughlin Bros., but the inside is Andersen's Fairy Tales. It has clearly NOT been rebound, but it's obviously in the wrong binding. Does anyone know anything about this book?

  • Has anyone heard of Newcomb jewelry?

I have a necklace I'm looking to sell, but I can't seem to find the maker. It's made of ceramic, in pink and purple disks, and marked Newcomb on the rather odd clasp. I find that Newcomb Pottery sometimes made jewelry, but I can find no pictures, and this is definitely not old enough to be Newcomb College. Anyone heard of this maker?

  • Looking for the name of a short story I once read?

The story was about a young woman who leaves home on the day of her older sisters' wedding. She makes the comment that her sister probably counted all her wedding presents to make sure she didn't take any. She goes to the nearest large city and gets a job, at a gift shop, I think. Her family looks for her, sort of. They broadcast on the radio every year looking for her. A childhood friend stumbles across her one day, several years later, and takes her to her parents' house, but her mother refuses to believe it's her, because she's successful. I read this in an English composition book once, and can't remember the name of the short story. It was really quite good. Any help?

  • Where would I get aluminum mesh, like that on purses, that is NOT shipped from China?

The only things I can find, aside from tracking down already made purses and ripping them down, are companies based in China. I know that's where it's all made, but I'm not retail-I don't buy wholesale. Anybody have any ideas of where I can get it?

  • How to find specific Zuni artisan?

Trying to identify the artisan who made a sterling silver, turquoise, coral and mother of pearl inlay brooch I have. It is marked "NH Zuni" on the back. It is inlaid with a bluebird in turquoise standing on a branch with mother of pearl inlaid leaves or flowers. It has a snake jawbone pattern around the outside in turquoise and coral. It is both a brooch and a pendant. I can find other pieces by the same artist, but no one seems to know who it is

  • Where to find an onyx plaque for a ring?

Trying to repair an antique ring of my family's. Central oval onyx plaque, 17x12mm, with a silver initial on top. Initial screws off, onyx is broken in half, being held in by initial. Looking to find replacement, but can't find anyone who sells them. Jeweler won't fix because of price involved (says it would have to be cut). Looked on eBay to scavenge one from another ring, but can't find anything, either. Need it flat and with a hold drilled in the center for the initial. Any ideas where to look?

  • What do you remember from the past twenty years?

I'm looking for...information, I guess. I need a list of things that have made an impact over the last twenty years. Anything, everything. From the internet to Michael Jordan, from the Taliban to Britney Spears, from CDs to DVDs, anything you can think of that you actually remember or has had an impact, good or bad, from 1990 forward. Nothing fancy, nothing offensive (though controversy of course is a given). It can be people, places, events, things, thoughts, faiths, anything.

  • Can't remember the name of a book, can someone help?

Looking for a book I read back in high school, no later than 1998, a sort of sci-fi/fiction type thing. Don't remember the author, it was about a girl, or young woman, living in a world where it was always overcast and snowing, and most people were slaves or serfs, working at coal mines, and are branded with a flame on their forehead. She's chosen as a handmaid by some high-ranking guy, and is going to the main city (I think), when the bridge they are on collapses and her "owner" falls to his death. She carries on to the city, telling the people that this guy is dead, and takes her place as a sort of priestess, where she begins to teach people a kind of mental control of themselves (pretty much "think warm thoughts"). As more people learn it, the sky begins to clear, because they are using less coal.

I cannot for the life of me remember what book this is. I was in 10th grade; it was NOT required reading. The cover was gray, and I think it had a person on the front. Please, someone help!!

  • Any idea what karat 825 Chinese gold is?

Have a piece of jewelry marked China 825 SI. It looks to be gold, feels like gold, but I can't find any source for Chinese gold standards. Either an answer or a place to look would be great.

  • Looking for the parentage of actress Helen Wood, 1917-1988.?

Trying to find out the parents, and thereby the grandparents, of Helen Wood, an actress from the 1930-1960's. She was born June 4, 1917 and died Feb. 2, 1988. She was from Clarksville, TN. I've Googled her and found her movies, but nothing about her family. The one genealogical thing I found turned out to be NOT HER, married to a Nowlin, because that Helen Wood was alive in 1998, when she is mentioned in her sisters' obituary. She is the granddaughter of D.B. Wood and a Phillips. This Phillips is my great-great grandmothers' sister, and I'm trying to fill in the family tree, especially since I can't figure out who my great great grandmothers' parents were. Hopefully, with another sister, I can track the line through HER. Please help!

  • Know where I might be able to find metal mesh?

The kind used in purses from the 70's and 80's mainly. I can find plenty of purses made of it on eBay, but I want it cheap, 'cause I'm gonna rip it down to make my own stuff anyway. Anyone know where it might be found?

  • Trying to identify what appears to be some sort of metal casting mold.?

It seems to be pig iron, about the size of a brick. It's a third again as long as a normal brick. It has three square indentions in the top, about an inch deep each, and roughly 3"x3.5" across. It has two bumpy areas at the ends, just an upraised spot. There are no markings, no grooves, and no way to pour anything in it from the sides, so I'm assuming this is supposed to be poured in from the top, like a very small, square ingot of some sort. It is bloody heavy, something like 30 lbs for this little thing. I haven't been able to find anything like this anywhere, 'net included. It belongs to my boss at work; he has two of them, the other with slightly deeper holes in it.

If anyone has ANY SERIOUS clue as to what it is, I will be your friend for life!

  • Alright, WWI buffs, help me out here.?

Okay, see if you can help me with this. I have a medal, I know it is WWI, it does not seem to be military. It has an archangel, I'm guessing Michael, on one side, holding a round shield and an unsheathed sword. On the other side, it has the name of all the Allies from WWI, around a center shield with the U.S. on it, and a fasces on top of the shield. It no longer has its' ribbon. It is solid brass, I believe, and has an artists' signature, very tiny, of Fraser. Does anyone know what this is?

The countries named are: France, Italy, Serbia, Japan, Montenegro, Russia, Greece, Great Britain, Belgium, Brazil, Portugal, Rumania, and China. It has the words "The Great War For Civilization" across the top, and the axe through the fasces has a double head to it. It also has six stars across the bottom.

  • Why does every time period say the end of the world is nigh?

It happens every time. They thought the world would end less than a hundred years after Jesus' death. They thought the world would in 666 a.d. They thought the world would end when we hit 1000 a.d. They thought the world would end in 1666, because of the "Devil's Number." And they must have thought to then, with the London Fire and the Lisbon Earthquake. They thought the world would in when we hit 2000 a.d. Why does every period in history believe that THEIR times are the END times?

  • Okay, help me out with some genealogy?

I need to know how this would work. How does someone just disappear? And I'm not talking kidnapping or anything. I KNOW my ancester William J. Phillips was living in Clarksville, TN in 1900. For certain, 100%. I know he was there in 1870. But, for some reason unknown to me, I can't find him. He's not on any census, for entire STATE of TN. Nowhere. How does one just...vanish? I know he was there; I have pictures of him being there, he owned a business there. So where in all bloody hell did he go? Someone PLEASE help me out with this; it's driving me NUTS!

(though many would say I'm already there.)

  • Anyone have access to the 1870 Census?

I'm looking for the name of the wife of William J. (Jasper) Phillips, of Clarksville, Montgomery County, TN. He was born Feb. 11, 1844. I have his parents; I have his children. I cannot find his wife. Since their daughter was born in 1872, I would think they'd be on there. If not, the 1880. His daughters' name was Eula Mae Coleman Phillips. I have access to neither of these. Please help; I've been looking for her name for years.
