  • Japan worst case scenario?

From what I understand, in the worst possibility (which seems to be getting less and less remote) the core of one or more damaged reactors would melt through the floor of the reactor compartment and, being composed mostly of uranium and therefore extremely hot and extremely heavy, would go down all the way through the Earth's crust until it hits the mantle. Wouldn't this produce a new and unusually nasty volcano spewing highly radioactive lava? Or am I making it even worse than it is?

  • Where is this Republican sweep I keep hearing about?

Democrats last night won the election to fill Murtha's old seat by an unexpected 10 point margin. That makes 7 consecutive elections for the House that Democrats have won. Including PA 12 last night, 2 were districts that McCain won in and another (Gillibrand's old seat in NY 20) where McCain almost won. If Republicans can't win any of these seats, how are they going to manage that 60 or 70 seat swing that we keep getting told is inevitable in November?

  • Health Care Bill - what went wrong?

Health Care Reform has now been law for 5 days. And yet, people on this site continue to openly criticize Obama without being arrested and sentenced to re-education camps. And I have discovered that there are doctors in my communities who continue to run private practices and aren't employees of the government.

We were assured repeatedly by conservatives that passage of the law would result in a total takeover of all aspects of health care by the government, as well as the establishment of a totalitarian dictatorship that would crush all vestiges of our freedom. Why hasn't it happened? Is this one of those aspects of the law that gets phased in a few years later?

I was so looking forward to it. After they took out the public option, the mass arrest of conservatives was my favorite part of the bill.

  • Importance of April 15th?

Every year, there's a huge scramble to file on April 15. I know that for those who actually owe taxes, there are penalties and interest attached to filing later. But for the majority who get refunds, it seems that filing by the 15th really doesn't matter at all - you can file next week, even next year, and still get the same refund. Am I missing something? Is there any cost to filing after the 15th? And since you still have to pay on the 15th, is there any real benefit to filing a 4868?

The computer now on reboot goes to my account, which makes setting a password for the account pointless.

  • Reducing back taxes?

My mother is suffering from early stages of Alzheimer's, and due to her declining health my brother has taken responsibility for managing her financial affairs. In doing so, he has discovered a problem of unpaid taxes going back 15 years. if the full amount were demanded by the IRS, with all possible penalties and interest, the bill would probably wipe out a large chunk of her life savings. Can anybody point to a good guide for this general circumstance and working out mitigation procedures and reduced payments with the IRS?

  • Do you need the color cartridge in Dell AIO 924?

The cartridge is out of ink, and replacements are overpriced. I'd like to just go on without it and do B&W printing, but it doesn't seem to allow that. Is there a way to do this? Is it safe to put a black cartridge in the color slot?
