  • What's a good book recommendation for my friend?

She suffered a serious tragedy as a child (her mother died in a horrific way), so I'd like to find a book that avoids serious medical or mental health illnesses and accidents.

I'd like to find something for her with some substance and that inspires in some way.

She used to read a lot of Danielle Steele, but wants to move on from that genre. She has read some classical literature too. And she is currently reading Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose.

She's also tiring of self-help books. I guess I'm looking for an inspirational novel that avoids serious medical and mental health issues / problems.

Thanks for any suggestions you can provide!!

  • What's the title of this 1990s Dutch comedy?

I don't know the name of the film or the names of any of the actors. I saw it in an international film festival in the early 1990s. I can describe a couple of scenes I remember.

A woman is sick and bedridden and she is put on display in the living room showcase window. She lives in a bland town with row houses that all look the same, concrete, and little or no landscaping / trees. I think people started to make pilgrimages to the window.

There was another scene where an upset young woman is riding her bike through the forest just outside this town and she is being jostled around and crying. The scene goes on forever which makes it hilarious. I think a young man is following her on his bicycle, trying to catch up with her to console her. It is such a funny scene. You'd have to have seen is to appreciate it.

Unfortunately I don't remember anything else, not even the plot. I just remember this strange town with strange people, and that was kind of the point, I think.

It's pee-your-pants funny. My sides hurt from laughing so hard the whole film. It may have even been a late 80s film.

Can you point me to a data base of Dutch films on the internet where I can keep looking if you don't know the film? I don't speak much Dutch, but I can figure some out from other Germanic languages I speak.

Can you recommend some great Dutch films too?

I like comedy, drama, thriller, inde, and documentaries.

  • residential steam boiler?

I have a 100 year old house in the upper midwest, and I have no heat this winter!

What week and month (roughly) do I have to worry about pipes freezing and sending gushing water into the house? Or at what temperature and for how long (e.g. 10 days at 32 degrees or less, etc.)?

Could I get by this year on space heaters? Are they safe?

What is the most efficient and greenest type of heating system if I have to replace my steam boiler?

And lastly, what heating system would give good resale value?

  • long-time knee injury, knee pain, sound sleeper, re-injury. Suggestions?

I injured my knee a few years ago and it has a bit of arthritis. I am a very sound sleeper and often don't wake up to turn over at night. When I wake up my knee really aches, and I think I am causing more injury when I sleep, but what can I do?

I've tried changing positions, and managed to "program" myself to re-position a couple of times a night, but it still really aches when I wake up.

How can I keep from re-injuring my knee while sleeping?

Anyone else have anything like this? What did you do?

  • a college's acceptance rate?

Where do you find out if the college your're attending has a good acceptance rate for a specific post-graduate degree / field.

In other words, how can you find out how your school ranks in general, as well as in a specific area?

If I wanted to go to medical school, for example, how do I find out the percentage of graduates from my college that get accepted?
