  • Chicken Stock Clear Vintage?

I have a vague memory of my Mom floating an egg shell on a pot of homemade chicken stock. I believe she said it kept the stock clear. Is this possible? Or was she just adding calcium? Has anyone ever heard of this? Mom passed 6 years ago. No one in the family made stock like her.

  • Catholics please; can Mary Magdelene be my patron saint?

After years of waiting, I am finally doing my 'Profession of Faith' and 'First Communion' Aug 9th I'm 50. Way before all the daVinci Code stuff I always felt an emotional bond with Mary Magdelene, because she was a sinner and a prostitute and Jesus forgave her. And I've done alot of bad things in my life. Should I choose another saint, or is she still OK?

  • What is it like to live in the desert? What adjustments do I need to make when moving from a damp climate?

Moving to Elko NV from Portland OR area ... I'm a native Oregonian. I've lived on both coasts but never in dry desert climate. Elko is where we plan on retiring. I would like advice on ... well EVERYTHING from you desert dwellers. Here in the Pacific Northwest, water is so plentiful, I rarely think about it. I know that has to change. Please don't tell me not to move as this is the climate my husband needs. Also concerned with issues as far as living at different elevation. 150 ft above sea level here, over 5000 ft where we plan on moving. I know it's a vague question, but I need to start somewhere. Thanks.

  • Puzzle computer game, CRYSTAL PATH, is there anything else like that?

I play FRESCO WIZARD & Charm Tale, but I'm not fond of the 'inlay' games. I also have BEJEWELED and Alchemy. They're my second favorites. Ineed a game to unwind with after work. I'm 50, so nothing too complicated.

  • Used Christmas Cards. I WANT THEM ! Any ideas on where I could put my name to get people to donate them to me?

I cover boxes with them, make disposable childrens books out of them, re-cut and make new Christmas cards. I just don't know how to ask folks for them without sounding like a kook ... ideas? any bright ideas as to where I could put my name out there to get them? This is legit. As fewer people send cards, it's harder to get them. eBay sell vintage lots (which I love) but that is spendy. What I don't use I pass on to teachers who use them for crafts in class.

  • Do therapists contact family members? Is this a COMMON practice?

Briefly: Brother-in-law; went through messy divorce (25 yr marriage). Divorce is final. G.G. is seeing a therapist. (He's in his 50's) He lives in another state. We (brothers, sisters, inlaws) have been supportive and loving. We have NOT interferred with the 'personal' part of the divorce. We have NOT taken sides in who is right and wrong. We have loved and listened without judging. We have been berated but have still offered love. Our homes are open to our brother and our hearts filled with love. We are exhausted, but still love our brother. G.G. wanted us to all meet in a neutral place to listen to his story (without interrupting, no words on our part). We (as a family) said NO, telling our brother, 'our homes and hearts are open to you at any time' but not thinking an audience would help him. Now his THERAPIST has written us (group email) asking us to hear-him-out. My question; ?Since when do therapist do this? I thought therapy was to help the PATIENT move on. We're all in our 50's

  • Why is my daughter suddenly interested in Playboy? Pease help a confused Baby Boomer.?

My step-daughter (we get along great) is asking for all things PLAYBOY for her 21st birthday ... Is this a new fad? when did Payboy become trendy again? did some star start wearing the Playboy symbol? I don't mind, I just want to know the basis of this. I don't want to spend a bunch of money on this if it is just a fad. (I already spoil her) She's a hard-working, college going, apartment dwelling responsible kid, but certainly isn't the Playboy bunny figure type. (Not being cruel, just honest)

  • HEALTHIER 4th of July MENU ?

At 50+ (in age) our family is trying to eat healthier. I am hosting a 4th of July get-together this year. I WON"T GO MEATLESS. I do want to twist this gathering away from the high caloric - bad carb - junk food fest it usually is. I'm looking for tasty substitutes for traditional picnic/BBQ fare. I have replaced hamburgers with BUFFALO and will offer veggie burgers too. Any ideas are welcome but PLEASE DO NOT PREACH to me about becoming VEGAN ... one step at a time for us old folks.

  • Preserving text of old book?

I have a book written in 1860. Nothing famous, never was in great shape. I've read it numerous times (I suspect it was written to teach young women good moral & Christian values) It's 360 pages long. Is there ANY way to copy the text other than scanning each page or just typing out the whole story? Either idea seems a daunting task.

  • NATURAL SuGaR Substitutes that can be cooked?

I like STEVIA on cold things. I know about honey & molasses. I wish to explore all my options (sweetener wise) I want to make homemade natural ICE CREAM (or frozen yogurt) when we (as a family) want a decadent tasting dessert. I WILL NOT DO Spenda or other artificials. I've been sugar/carbonation free for 2 months & want to keep it up. I've never felt better!

  • HELP Healthier Eating for my Husband.?

My husband is a smoker, drinker and avid junk food junkie. After 30 years of suffering from an eating disorder, I am finally eating normal and exercising regularly. The only meal we come remotely close to sharing together is breakfast (due to our odd work schedules)

So ... breakfast, I make him eat. He prefers to eat at 10:30 AM but I fix him something and he eats when I do at 7:30AM. (I'm a good cook & he likes what I fix)

Dinner - he eats between 7 & 8 PM(I send him out the door with a 'Lean Cuisine' or 'Healthy Choice' frozen meal - he says they are easy to zap. He eats it 'on the fly' at work as he is a radio dispatcher for TriMet (bus in Ptld) between emergencies. Then when he gets home, (9:30-10PM) and wants junk food or ice cream.

LUNCH is junk food and sodas, no matter what I send with him.

His job is VERY high stress. He has a heart condition, high blood pressure and is slightly overweight. He won't quit smoking or drinking ... HELP

Our marriage is good and solid.

Not interested in Vegas (too hot) or Reno (too crowded) or Fernly (too close to Reno) I'm a country girl and long to live back out away from the major cities. Hillboro OREGON is almost just a suburb of Portland and after 48 years, I'm tired of the rain.

  • How Do I Help A Lifelong Friend Going through messy divorce?

Leslie (female) and I have known each other for 35 years. She's been with her husband for nearly that long. The marriage has been on the rocks for the last 5 years. He has finally left her. They are divorcing. He won't be back. She is deeply depressed. She has made a 1/2 hearted attempt at suicide. I have suggested counciling but she says she doesn't need it. She doesn't have a 'faith' (no religious upbringing). Her Dad is dead and she barely tolerates her Mom. She has no friends that I know of. Her whole world was this man, even though she has been unhappy for years. She's reclusive. Truthfully, we have little in common but our past. I deeply care about her, but feel helpless. Any advice would be appreciated. I am in a happy marriage now. She was there for me when I was at the bottom of my own horrible divorce and depression, so I feel I understand what she's going through. But I had God, a loving family and friends to help me through rough times. She has none of this.
