What are some advantages to shooting in RAW format instead of Jpeg with a digital camera?

I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT 8 megapixel and can shoot in RAW format or Jpeg. What are some advantages to RAW format?

I always keep an eye on what my kids watch and it seem that the Nick channel is getting trashier and lowering it's moral values.
