  • Should I re-apply for a job that I have already been turned down for?

I applied for a legal job at a large company about 3 months ago. The application was made online using their careers portal. Their website was quite regimented about the information that could be provided and it did not really give much opportunity to elaborate on my experience or to 'sell myself'. The application was not successful.

The role has not yet been filled and the company are now using an external recruiter. Before I knew that it was this particular company that was recruiting, I spoke to the recruiter about the role and she thought that I have just the right experience for it. However when she told me the company and I told her that I had applied directly with them she said she can't put me forward for the role (presumably in part because she won't get her recruitment fee if I have already been introduced to the company through other means).

I am concerned that someone in HR/recruitment at the company has turned down my application as they don't really understand my experience. I am keen to re-apply directly with the legal department so that I can really sell myself.

Any thoughts from people (particularly people in HR/recruitment or who have been involved in a lot of recruitment) as to whether I should re-apply directly?

  • Which is the best of the Gold Coast theme parks for a toddler?

We are taking my 2 year old to the Gold Coast for a few days and would like to go to one of the theme parks. I would be interested in any thoughts as to which of the various theme parks (Sea World, Movie World, Dreamworld etc) people think might be the most suitable for a 2 year old (ie which has rides, shows etc that are most suited to that age).

    Thanks.

  • Does a 7 month old baby need formula if she is not breastfeeding?

My 7 month old daughter started solids at 4.5 months and has gradually increased her solid food intake. She currently has 3 meals a day which includes things like cereals, fruit, vegetables, meat, bread, lentils, cous cous etc. She has started to stop breastfeeding during the day. I try to breastfeed her after her solid meals and at 'snack' times between her solid meals but she's just not interested anymore. She breastfeeds quite well before going to bed at night.

I'm wondering whether she is getting all the nutrition she needs from these meals or whether I need to give her some formula so that she gets the vitamins etc that she is missing out from the breastfeeds. Any thoughts?

  • Glycaemic index (GI) of brown rice?

I've been reading some conflicting information regarding the GI of brown rice. Some articles say that long grain brown rice is the rice with the lowest GI but other articles say that brown rice generally is high GI. Which is correct?

  • Baptising children as Catholics if parents not married in a Catholic church?

Does the Catholic church have problems with baptising children if their parents were not married in a Catholic church (eg if the parents only had a civil marriage)?

Does it cause any particular problems if one parent has previously been married in a Catholic church and that marriage has not been annulled (ie that parent is still married to another person in the eyes of the Catholic church)?

  • Ex-fiancee that keeps hanging around?

I've been seeing a guy for about 2 mths. He was previously engaged but his ex-finacee cancelled the wedding and moved interstate about 4 mths ago. He was quite hurt by the breakup.

About a mth ago his ex posted a message on his facebook wall saying that she still loves and misses him. She found out about me a couple of weeks ago and since then she has been sending him lots of text messages and calling him a lot - she makes up excuses like asking him advice on how to fix her computer. She hasn't said that she wants to get back together with him but she obviously doesn't want to let go.

He says that she doesn't mean anything to him anymore but that he can't just cut the ties from her completely. I am trying to accept this but then today he sent her chocolates and jewellery on facebook (something that he has previously only done with me).

Am I being overly jealous and sensitive in being worried about this? Or is it reasonable for me to want him to cease contact with her?

  • Hawaiian Airlines - in-seat movies?

I'm flying from Sydney to Honolulu. Does anyone who has flown this route recently know if they have in-seat movies (ie individual TV screens in each seat)? I see from their website that you have to pay for movies but I wasn't sure whether this meant the old style screen in the centre of the plane.

Any other comments on Hawaiian Airlines welcome.

I'm an Australian living and working in the UK (since May 2005). Do I need to do a tax return for tax year ending April 2006? Are these striaghtforward enough to do yourself or do I need to get an accountant to sort this out? If I can do it myself, what forms do I need etc?

  • DIY Sound of Music tour in Salzburg?

I am heading to Salzburg and want to see some of film locations from 'The Sound of Music'. I know there are organised tours where you can see various locations but I'm not a big fan of such tours. I have found lists of the various locations in Salzburg that were used and was hoping to see some on my own. Has anyone done this on their own before?

While some locations like the Residenz Square and Fountain and the Mirabell Gradens are obviously open to the general public, I was wondering whether the other places like the palace, the convent and pavillion are open to the general public. Anyone know? Also, does anyone know if it is hard to get to the various locations?

  • Best way to get a Russian tourist visa?

Has anyone gone through the process of getting a Russian tourist visa while in London? I understand that you can either apply through the post or go to the embassy - any advice on how long either option takes in practice?

I also understand that hotels in Russia can arrange a tourist visa for you - has anyone done this? If so, what does it involved?

If relevant, applying for Australian and Polish passport holders.

  • A&W in Singapore airport?

Used to love going to A&W for the root beer when I visited family in Singapore. I remember finding it in the airport once when I was transiting and was overjoyed. Looked for it last time I was there but couldn't find it. Am transiting there again for an hour and would love to find some root beer. Does anyone know if there is still an A&W next to the gate lounges? If so, does some amazing person out there know which gate lounge it is next to?

  • What jewellery and what colour shoes go with pale green bridesmaid dresses?

I am a bridesmaid at a Spring wedding and we are trying to decide on the colour of our shoes and jewellery.

The dresses are pale green - probably what you would call peridot, celadon, apple or lime green. The dresses are long (so shoes will be hidden) and strapless (so lots of neck region exposed). The flowers will be pale pink.

We are trying to decide between silver or gold jewellery. We decided against anything with pearls but are thinking of diamonds/diamantes.

Also tied into that is whether to have gold or silver shoes (either way they will be strappy and probably with diamantes on them).

I think it's a no-brainer and that we should go with silver but another bridesmaid doesn't agree with me (and she works as a shoe buyer for an expensive department store so her word carries some weight).

    Any thoughts?
