who knows police procedures?
What I need to know is the subsequent actions of the police considering the following scenario, which I assure you is entirely fictional.
My protagonist, when she was 11 years old, she led her younger sister to the canal and caused her to fall in the water. She then returns to her parents, and pretends she knows nothing of her sister's whereabouts. A search is called and the sister is not found. Some 20 years later, her sister is never found, but due to overwhelming guilty, the protagonist, confesses.
What I need to know is:-
If she self presented at her local police station, would her confession be taken seriously?
If she was to be seen, what rank of officer would conduct the interview?
What would be the subsequent actions of the police? - i.e. Release on bail?
In light of the fact that the 'crime' is years old, i.e. 20 years old, would it still be investigated? By a particular unit?
Would police use resources to conduct a new search in light of the re-surface of evidence?
In light of the fact that no body is found - would there be a particular division that would handle the case?
About how long would the enquiry take? From confession to prosecution
In this work of fiction, the character who is believed murdered, actually turns up alive and well!
So in light of the above, had the police decided to go forward (or the CPS) would the case then be 'dropped'?
Any pointers to website would also be helpful x

I was out of the country for nine months and failed to begin paying for my TV license after being found guilty of using the TV without one. I've come back now to find the case went to court, (I wasn't here) and now the bailiffs are involved! Can they really enter my house without my permission? I have contacted the courts and they say this matter has gone too far for them to sort out.....
