  • Problem with cistern?

Something seemed to snap when I depressed the handle. Nothing seems obviously broken but the handle moves up and down with no resistance. It is an old cistern, the type with a ceramic siphon. The nearest image I could find is http://andysworld.org.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2... the handle is at the front of the cistern. Any ideas?

  • Help with a tax problem?

I have a young friend who has never received a tax return. I discovered this by accident when I reminded her she needed to get her tax returns in by the end of the month. Of the five years she has been out of full time education, she has only been employed two.

She genuinely was ignorant about the need to submit a return, assuming that the Inland Revenue would send one out.

What is her legal position and what are the likely penalties she might face?

  • What do you think of this?

A certain leading supermarket is arguing that because Christmas falls on a weekday, it should be treated like a weekday not a bank holiday. If it can wangle this, staff can be required to stop right into Christmas Day itself to ensure the shelves are full for Boxing Day trading. Staff will be paid at the ordinary rate of overtime.

If this very large company gets away with it, the others are bound to follow.

  • A friend is having problems with BT.?

Since a lightning strike, the land line has been erratic. She has been given several numbers, and no improvement. As she relies on the phone and the internet for her home business, and this has been going on for some time, she is suffering serious financial loss. What are her rights here? Complaining does no good.

  • My computer keeps crashing when watching TV online?

I have Vista Home Basic, my ISP is Talk Talk, 1GB RAM and an Athlon processor (2.70 GHz). The computer is a Fujitsiu-Siemens, only six months old and I do make sure to check for updates.

Three times now my computer has crashed while using i player, two of those while watching same the downloaded programme in one hour.

On another occasion this happened while watching a streamed video from another site.

Any ideas? I am very reluctant to use i player now, because each time, the computer refuses to start again. Fortunately, if I wait an hour or so, startup repair usually works.

Radio seems fine (luckily because I love listen again).

  • What is a RAID controller?

Twice now I have had a blue screen appear on start up, advising me to shut down and saying that the problem is either a newly installed driver or software. I used Device Manager to try and diagnose the problem It brought up an 'Other Devices' message, and pointed me in the direction of RAID controller. Is this likely?

I installed a new keyboard a week ago and Libra (database software which often crashes)

Okay, can do this with the stuff I have recorded, but hit a snag with bought videos because of copyright protection. I have a machine which dubs video to DVD and the computer with Nero on board. I have some treasured old videos - the old BBC version of Pride and Prejuidice for example, I would like to transfer.

  • Problem with Vista and LAN?

I am on network with my daughter in same house.

She has just bought a new computer with Vista pre-installed. It connected to a LAN connection that she didn't ask for it too. She also can't connect to Pipex, and is thinking it might be related to the LAN she connected to she disabled the LAN but afterwards she still couldn't connect to Pipex. I'm still getting Pipex fine though, the internet speed is completely normal on my PC but with this LAN connection on my daughters PC the connection speed is very, very slow.
