  • I need help completely reformatting to remove virus?

My wife's laptop caught an adspammer and I can't get rid of it. I've reinstalled windows, doing boot from CD, deleted all the partitions prior to installation, and still when I get finished and window's starts to boot I get a virus installer saying "wait up to 30 minutes for install" and when I open task manager I have a windows script running and a "no touch" application. I stopped them from running as quickly as I could, but after I installed my antivirus I rebooted, and it said that the antivirus protection had been turned off (symantec) and it was listed as "tampered" which I take to be evidence of the virus trying to block it. When I went to reinstall windows again, to try to reformat a second time, I saw that in addition to the regular unpartitioned space, there was an additional 8 mb of unpartitioned space that didn't count toward the actual. Is it possible for a virus to trick the BIOS into listing the virus rootkit as unpartitioned space so that I can't delete it that way? What other options do I have? Can I simply do a "reformat C:/" and install windows again? Or do I need something else? I haven't connected to the internet yet, because I'm sure the virus will start to download itself again.

  • How do you stop a red ant infestation?

I have a huge nest of red ants near my back patio. I tried to kill them off using bait traps set around the mound opening, and for awhile didn't see any of them. When I came home today, they were everywhere! They're all over my back porch, and I'm worried about them trying to get into the house. What can I do to stop them or kill them?

  • Retirement withdrawl?

I recently received a letter from a former employer explaining that I need to either roll my retirement account over to my current employer or cash out by June 1st. Lets say an amount of 2000$ is currently invested. If I were to take the cash option, what percentage would be taken as an early withdrawal penalty, and what would be the estimated taxes associated that I would need to retain for next tax season? State of Arizona.

  • I dreamed up a geometry question I couldn't answer...?

Say a ship is sailing on the open see, and a man in the crows nest at 40ft high sees land on the very edge of the horizon. How would you determine distance to land if you knew the circumference of the earth? I was thinking it's something about a line tangent to a point on a circle that intersects with a point 40ft beyond the circle...but that's about as far as I got. I'm horribly at geometry and this is gonna drive me nuts!

Or are they keyed to a specific set of registry keys? I have a valid license for XP Media Center edition, but no disc to install it with. Will I be able to borrow a disc from a friend and use it to install using my own registry key?

  • How difficult are Doc Marten 20 eyes to lace up?

Are they difficult to put on or take off? Generally at the end of the day I just want to toss off my boots, but it seems like these would be quite a project to lace and unlace every time.

  • How does gravity work in toroidal masses?

Assuming a large planet sized toroidal mass (ring shaped) suspended in space with no other accountable gravitational forces, what would happen to an object traveling at less than escape velocity through the exact center of the toroid? Would it be slowed/stopped in the center, or would it be pulled "down" toward a surface of the toroid?
