  • Question about how Schwinn exercise bikes calculate distance and speed.?

I got a Schwinn recumbent bike about 4 years ago. At the time I was avidly riding my street bike. I know that I was averaging 12 mph on my street bike. When I began using the Schwinn the readout was telling me I was riding at 18 mph average. In addition, I was using the Runkeeper web app to track my activities and it would estimate that I was burning about 40 calories per mile while the Schwinn said 40 calories after 1.5 miles.

Jump forward 3 years and I now have the recumbent AND an upright Schwinn. The upright does the same thing. With the same amount of exertion on my part the upright is showing me riding 18 mph. But when I jump on my street bike I'm back to averaging 12 mph.

Does anyone know why this is? Is it standard for exercise bikes? (I've only owned or used the two) Is it, perhaps because with an exercise bike you're putting out constant, direct effort without the possibility of coasting? And even better does anyone have a link to a site that might explain this phenomenon?

  • Transcoding (converting) a video file at a different speed?

I have some tutorial videos on my computer. I want to watch them at an increased speed on another device. I need a free app that will convert them with an increase in speed so that the new video file plays more quickly without having to use any special software to speed it up. I don't care if the sound is pitched up. That won't bother me.

  • Windows 7 Home Premium x64 speed problems.?

    Lots of details...bear with me.

I'm not exactly a novice here but I can't figure this out. My computer (in the last 4-6 months) has been having some serious speed issues. It's a Dell Inspiron 531 with 4 gig of ram, an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ 2.31 GHz processor and an Nvidia GeForce GTS 250 graphics card.

It used to run amazingly fast. Now it isn't. I've run Glary, CCleaner and Malwarebytes. I've cleaned the junk files, defragmented the drive, registry and the memory. I have done everything I can for the beast and it's still bogged down. Here are the symptoms:

Excessive launch time for applications on first run. When I first launch Chrome or Firefox it takes upwards of a minute for them to open but the next time I run them they launch more quickly. Ssame problem with other applications.

Excessive time for save or open dialog boxes to appear. Often 30 seconds sometimes a minute or LONGER for a save dialog to appear (the first time.) After that the dialog opens fairly quickly.

Minecraft is running rather poorly as well. I used to be able to play minecraft with high quality graphics, shading, etc. Now I have jumpy graphics and lag even with low quality settings across the board.

It strikes me as a memory problem but I've run memory checks and they come back fine.

Also, with the above time issues. If I go an hour or so without opening a save dialog or launching a particular application then it will, again, take a long time to launch.

    Any ideas?

  • How do I transfer a court case between California counties?

I have a family law case in LA county but both parties have moved to another county (both are in the same county still just not LA county).

The LA court ordered that the case should be transferred but I don't know where to go from there. I have researched and can't find a form to file to affect the transfer.

What do I have to do next?

  • Observing someone traveling near the speed of light.?

I want to make sure that may naivety is not getting the best of me.

Here is what I imagine to be true. Tell me if I'm wrong.

If I am standing at rest and someone is in a spacecraft orbiting around me at nearly the speed of light and I watch them throw a baseball it will appear to me that the baseball is traveling very slowly. If, on the other hand, they are orbiting at half the speed of light and they throw the baseball then it will appear to me to be moving more quickly. And finally, if they are decelerating at a significant rate when they throw the ball then it will appear to me to be accelerating after it has left their hand.

Correct? Or do I lack a sufficient understanding of the relativistic effects on time?

  • Asian text in Firefox tabs in Windows 8?

I have been experiencing this in Firefox when visiting my school website. It is rather inconsistent and I can't seem to reproduce the effect by recreating steps. I was wondering if someone could tell me what the text says. It's always the same text but sometimes I only see one or two of the words. The following is a link to a jpg image on a google drive that shows the text in the tabs. If you happen to know WHY I might be experiencing this that would be helpful as well.

  • Legality of giving prescription medication to animals?

I live in California (in case that matters) and wanted to know what the law has to say in regards to giving medication that is prescribed for a person to an animal instead. This is NOT about a person taking a dog's drugs. It's about a person giving their medications TO the dog.

And please...no soap box lectures about responsibility or health and safety (of these I am fully aware.) I just want to know the legality of doing so.

  • BSOD on boot w/other info?

Windows Vista Basic 32 bit on an Acer Aspire 5515. Running antivirus / malware software.

My computer was running fine yesterday. I have made no changes. I booted this afternoon without issue but had to leave the house before I could do anything on the computer so all I did was boot and then shut down a few minutes later. This evening I turned it on, got a flash of the BSOD and it rebooted and tried to launch into repair mode (which it couldn't seem to do.)

I booted into safe mode with networking and I ran system restore to roll me back to the automatic save point from yesterday afternoon. After that the computer booted without issue. However, when I booted a second time it came up with the same boot failure message.

I booted into safe mode again, ran system restore again, booted normally again and now it's back to boot failure.

I can only get one happy boot out of it and then it goes back to failure. The failure message on boot is the standard "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage..."

Any ideas where to go from here?.

  • Can't boot Windows Recovery partition.?

I have a Dell running Vista. I had to reinstall Windows. Unfortunately, I had to reinstall from a generic installation DVD. My hard drive has a factory imaged recovery partition that I was able to select as a boot option before I reinstalled Windows. The recovery partition was not altered by the Windows installation but I now can't chose it from the list of startup options.

Is there a way I can get Windows to recognize the recovery partition as a bootable option or a way that I can simply boot from it so that I can use it to reinstall Windows?

And for anyone who is wondering WHY I just didn't use it in the first place it is because I was locked out of my computer by a password I could not remember. Since I didn't have the password I couldn't get into windows AND the recovery partition would not let me do a clean install without the password. So that is why I did a generic Windows install. I would prefer to have the computer configured exactly the way it was when I purchased it, though, so I would like to now restore it from the recovery partition.

  • Looking for an old school online RPG I used to play?

It was a top down view. Fairly cheesy graphics (I would say 16 bit from what I remember), and it was "infinite." Basically it would generate an endless number of dungeon levels. The weapons / armor / equipment all had basically the same naming scheme but would have different prefixes and the items dropped by monsters would be stronger the deeper you were. Same thing with the monsters. They had the same names / attributes but were a little stronger with each level.

It had no plot, and no end. It was just a mindless crawler that you could come back to from time to time to play for a bit and go a little deeper and, basically, waste some time.

Anyone familiar with it and remember what it was called?

  • Good poetry sharing site?

I am primarily looking for a site that allows poets to retain FULL rights to their works (no stipulations where the site can repost your work or publish it in compendiums, etc.) And preferably one where there is some decent customization for backgrounds, images, etc for each poem posted.

I currently use thestarlitecafe.com but their site is SOOO glitchy it drives me nuts most of the time.

    Any suggestions?

  • What android app is displaying a particular message?

I usually keep my Android 4.2.2 tablet in airplane mode to save on battery. This has not been a problem until the last couple of days. Now EVERY time I wake it up I have the following message:

No Internet connection "Please check your wi-fi or mobile network connection and try again"

The message is also popping up while I'm reading or playing games or just thumbing through screens.

This has only been happening for three days and I have not installed any new apps.

Is there a way for me to identify which application is causing this popup?

  • Question about an unusual law?

About 12 years ago I was researching laws regarding registration of sex offenders. The gentleman for whom I was doing this was moving to California from an eastern state. I can't remember which state it was.

During my search of applicable laws I found a law in his state of origin that said it was illegal to teach a girl who was under the age of 13 to walk a tightrope. It was classified as a sexual offense.

Can anyone tell me which state had / has this law?

  • Found a page from a book...what book is it?

Characters mentioned are: Luciano, Antonia, Martina, Emilia, Talbot and Signor Lombardo (who is an official from the Perugia archaeological museum.)

A short passage from the page:

"Talbot himself carried a curious instrument which she knew was a magnetometer, but she had only a hazy idea of its purpose.

Now she was told to mark her sketch-block into squares corresponding to the large chart which the museum director showed her."

So...any idea what book this is?

  • Perception Wireless compatible microphone?

I have a model SR45 receiver by Perception Wireless and I need to know what microphones would be compatible with it. I checked their web site and it has a frequency chart for my model "range" but doesn't actually have the frequencies listed for my model. The unit operates on the A band if that helps. If you are able to find the frequency listing for the individual channels that would be perfect. I just need to know what frequencies the channels are on so that I can find a Mic compatible with one of them.

    Thanks.

  • Durable Android phone with GREAT GPS?

I only want to use the device as a GPS unit. I do NOT want phone service and I do NOT want network. I am NOT going to use the device for navigation. I will ONLY use it on Wi-Fi to save my maps offline and then use with no network access at all for GPS location services.

Basically, I'm using it as a glorified handheld GPS unit. The only reason I'm going for a phone rather than a Garmin or other handheld GPS is that I rely heavily on several Android applications when using my GPS.

So what I want to know is:

What phone has a reputation for quickly and accurately acquiring GPS signal WITHOUT a network connection. It doesn't have to tell me how to get from point a to point b. It just has to accurately report my longitude and latitude.

I'm using a Motorola Droid X at the moment but they have a known issue with GPS reception and it's becoming aggravating.

  • Can't open a port on internet.?

I'm feeling rather stupid here...hopefully someone can help me out.

I want to run a minecraft server for myself and one or two friends. Here's the issue. NOBODY can connect to the server from the outside.

I can connect using "localhost" but if I try connecting using my external IP address it does not connect.

I have checked using a couple of different online port checkers and they both return the result that the port is closed.

    I have done the following:

Enabled Port Forwarding on my router for the necessary (and even ALL) ports.

Enabled the DMZ (have done this separately AND at the same time as port forwarding.

    Disabled Windows Firewall

    Disabled Antivirus

No matter what I do I can't connect to the server using my IP address nor can anyone else connect.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit and am using a Linksys WRT54G router. I know how my computer works, I know how to change the settings on my router. Something just isn't clicking to open me up to the outside world.

    Any suggestions?
