  • Should I launder an old quilt?

I've inherited a 100yr. old quilt. It's in great shape; the fabric and stitching is all intact. Trouble is, it's got a verrrry slight musty smell. How do I get rid of this musty smell without possibly damaging the quilt?

  • I left my roast out all night! Is it safe to eat?

I made a slow-cooker roast last night, and the leftovers went into a tupperware container that sat on my countertop all night. :( Will it be safe to eat if I heat it up sufficiently?

  • Scandinavians! What does the word "tommer" mean in English?

I do believe it has the little slash through the "o", but it's a family name I've seen. My babelfish is no help!

  • I'm looking for artist and song of an 80's video: she's got verrry long braids and a pierced nose and chain?

I remember a music video from the 80's; a young female artist who had very, very long (dozens) braids and a NOSE CHAIN. Does anyone have a clue?

  • Texas Hold'em: Jack-10 suited. Do you hold 'em?

I'm beginning to wonder if Jacks are simply back luck for me. If you're dealt a Jack-10 or a Jack-9 suited, would YOU keep them?

Bonus points if someone can explain what the purpose of a small blind is. Big blind, I can understand, but a small blind too? I'm not getting it.

  • Can I reuse pickle juice?

I know how it sounds, but I tend to hork down my hot carrots pretty quick. I was wondering if I can reuse that jalapeno-vinegar juice for another batch. It's only a couple of weeks old. Any risk of contamination?

  • What gives you the "heebie-jeebies"?

This is serious research here! What gives YOU the "heebie-jeebies", that uncomfortable physical sensation that you've gotten too close to something extremely creepy?

  • What's your best rage song?

What's your best "rage song"; that one song you keep going back to to work yourself up in those moments you're feeling a little low....your ego is ebbing and you need to head out the door in a little while and ...confront the world?

I've got a bit of a "rage folder", but the one song I keep going back to is "Machine Head" by Bush. (I'm a dork, I know.) Something about it makes me want to tilt my head back and laugh at the world as I watch it burn....:P

My latest fav is "Ladies and Gentlemen" by Saliva. I imagine I'm an unbeatable MMA fighter.

THERE! I've bared my soul! Now bare yours!

  • Is orbital velocity different from escape velocity? ?

I just learned (from the History Channel) that escape velocity (from the Earth) is 25,000 mph. I always thought that it was 17,000 mph because I remember hearing that figure used in reference to the space shuttle. Is orbital velocity different from escape velocity? If so, is 17K mph correct?

  • How long would it take to break down a voice-recognition code into a digital code that could be deciphered?

I'm writing a little sci-fi, and I'm interested in how long it would take (one of my characters) to break down something that's been encrypted with voice-recognition software, and then have a computer decipher that digital code.

OR...is voice-recognition just a fancy interface? Bypass it?

  • Is a "gold-titanium alloy" even possible?

In the recent movie Iron Man, Tony Stark comments at the end that the suit is made of a "gold-titanium alloy". From a metallurgic perspective, is this possible? What would be the molecular advantage of such an alloy?

  • I've got a gold bar...how much is it worth? How do I sell it?

What's with gold bars, anyway? How much are they worth? How do I "move" this thing, and turn it into money? Who's going to start asking questions?

I don't want to get my legs broken asking around in seedy bars by the waterfront...who would I go to to sell an actual gold brick and how much is it worth?

  • What do you all think of the Jesus Christ Show on KFI on Sunday mornings?

Neil Saavedra plays Jesus Christ on his own Sunday morning radio talk show in Los Angeles. I've enjoyed it tremendously, and am curious what opinions are out there.

  • Bike won't turn over...?

1983 KZ750 LTD. It's got a brand new battery and will crank and crank, but won't turn over.

It was running up until a couple of weeks ago when the battery went dead and I discovered it had the wrong battery in it.

I don't want to pay to have it trucked to the only shop in town that works on older bikes, so in terms of troubleshooting, what's next? It's getting gas, plugs are good, brand new battery...?

  • I have a question for Computer Crypto- freaks...?

I'm writing a story where a character is given a thumb drive containing an encryption code-key. Is it possible with today's technology to make that code non-copyable? That is, that's the only existing key?

Also, how many characters would be in an impressive-length key? Fifty-thousand? 100k? A million? We're talking military grade, to crypto-freak quality encryption, here.

I welcome your input and ideas.

  • What has particle physics contributed to mankind?

I just read up on the Higgs Boson particle, and have always found particle physics interesting, and while I know it's essential to our understanding of the universe, can anyone tell me HOW it's been useful to mankind?

Where are the teleporters and the gravity machines and the tachyon emitters (which as we know from Star Trek, are always useful if you can reverse them in a pinch.) Are physicists just wasting taxpayer dollars on this alleged, "research"?

  • Tough Question: If familiarity breeds contempt, then how do I overcome contempt in my relationships?

We've all done it to some extent; we get used to a routine between friends and co-workers and spouses and over time, we develop anger and frustration over their predictable behaviors. We get angry at our girlfriends for always saying/doing the same thing in social situations or worse, a stressful situation. We get angry at our co-workers for always letting us down, or going over our heads, or something similar. How do we beat it?

My situation: I'm business partners AND roommates with a friend of 13 years. He's very laid back, sloppy and predictable, while I'm a neat-freak and territorial and goal-oriented. From time to time I get enormously angry at him and have to remind myself that he's not a "threat" to my world (as it were). It's having an impact on our friendship, though.

What insight do you have for me? How can I beat this psychological trap?
