  • I am looking for a good external HDD?

I purchased a Seagate some years ago, a 120 powered external drive with USB support. I got great use out of it, and gave it away to my sister when I bought a new HDD. The new one was a 250GB Toshiba, and it sat around for a while before I used it. It did great with small files and such, but when I went to backup everything on my computer, it stalled out around 30 percent complete, and made the infamous tick of a failed HDD. Then it started a high pitched noise. After stopping the backup and running a checkdisk, everything seemed fine, but everytime I try to import large files or do a backup, same story. This device is now out of warranty, and I will not buy another Toshiba HDD drive unit.

After searchin all the popular sites online, I find quite a few people have the same problem of a failed HDD from all the top manufacturers. I use both Mac and Pc, and I am wondering if Apple's time capsule is the only viable option for backup, as it seems even the top drives are not very reliable these days.

Does anyone know of a reliable external drive, or a drive and case, that I could trust my important files to?

I know that I can pay for an online backup service, but I am not willing to do that, as it is not very secure, my files are in someone's elses hands, and it is very time consuming even over my broadband connection.

  • I am missing money? But how?

Ok so me and my colleagues were on a business trip and we had plenty of money to stay at where ever we wanted so we decided somewhere cheap and we would keep the travel money. We went to this hotel a little out of the way and asked the keeper how much for only one room. The keeper told us 30 bucks. So we each forked over ten dollars to cover this. We left and went to our room. The bell hop comes a few moments later and says that we were overcharged and gives us each 1 dollar back. We asked the inkeeper about this the next day and he informed us that the room was only 25 dollars. We assumed that the bell hop, not having change, just kept two dollars and gave us only three. So in actuality with the three dollars we got back, we only paid 9 dollars a piece for the room. So, 9 times 3 = 27, plus the two that the bell hop kept makes 29 dollars. What happened to the other dollar?

  • A question about an LCD tv as a computer monitor?

So I am thinking of getting a display for my Macbook. Mac's cinema display is pricey for a 24 inch screen (900 bucks). I know that most LCD tvs come with a p/c port, or vga, and some come with DVI. I can get an adapter for either from Mac to connect the tv to my mini display port. My question is, how good is an LCD tv as a monitor? How fast are the refresh rates? Would I be better to simply get an LCD monitor and be limited to what I may input to it, such as an Xbox or ps?Thoughts from people who know?

  • How does this sound for reform?

In an article fromhttp://www.nypost.com/seven/12142008/news/regional... "Paterson's proposal would also reportedly lift the limit on how much state tax can be charged for gasoline. The state's tax was limited to 8 cents per gallon. A new state tax could be tied to the price of gas, allowing state revenues to rise with the price of gas." So he wants the tax on gas to be able to rise when the prices of gas surge, in other words, make it a percentage based tax. This year, we saw record highs in fuel prices, and therefore, contributing to the fall of the economy. How about we impose a law that says something like, as the prices of gas rise, then the tax lowers? This would lower the price of a gallon by a little bit, and also it would fuel government to actually do something about it, as they would start to miss the tax that was coming in. Then they would have to agree to cheaper fuels, more efficient vehicles, and more drilling, all of which would help the economy.

  • Socialist television reform in the US? ?

In researching new copyright laws and codes, what is right and what is wrong, it is very hard to find information on where the lines are drawn.

In reading an article from USA today, which I will provide a link to, says this:It has already begun. In about a year, the FCC-mandated broadcast flag takes effect. All digital televisions sold in the U.S. will have to respond to a code that broadcasters can embed in their programming. That code will tell the system what you're allowed to do with the broadcast. Maybe you can record it, maybe not. Maybe you can only watch it on one TV. Maybe you can only watch it after 10 PM.

The choice won't be yours anymore.

    ----------------http://www.usatoday.com/tech/columnist/andrewkanto...

I had seen many commercials on TV stating that in 2009 all over the broadcasts will be done in digital, and that analog television set will no longer work unless you have a box that receives this signal and converts it. Knowing government and big business, I though it was just a way to force the acquisition of new television sets and boxes. But it turns out to be way more than that.

This allows a new way of censorship and a new way of controlling broadcasts. This can and will be a tool used to limit our viewing capabilities, all the while forcing us into what we may or may not watch, what times we may watch it, whether we can record for future viewing while away from home, and a host of imaginative possibilities.

What is next? Coffee makers that come on only at given times? Thermostats that are changed only by government? Paying to watch PBS?

  • Treasure in the ocean?

In the movie into the blue, it lays a claim at the end that the worlds oceans hold over 6 billion dollars in treasure waiting to be found. Is this a correct estimate? And just how does someone go about finding treasure? Are there ways to figure out the courses of these old pirate and merchant ships? Where would be the more likely places? Islands? Deep Sea?
