How many of you horse forum answerers have missed Lisa M and are glad to see her back?
I am.
11 AnswersHorses1 decade agoHere's a hypothetical horse breeding question for mindless entertainment:
So...if you were going to breed a horse, which stallion would you pick and why. What would you be trying to produce, and what about this particular pairing (your mare with this stallion) makes you think you'd have a good, logical chance to acheive your goal foal.
This is a strictly hypothetical question, of course. I'm not advocating breeding, just wanting a little discussion about how others think before being responsible for the creation of an animal that can live about 30 years.
14 AnswersHorses1 decade agoWhy do people immediately suspect former abuse when a horse balks at an unfamiliar task, or acts up?
I know there are a lot of worthless bastards out there who DO mistreat horses...but I read a lot of posts in many forums about bad behavior, and the common thread is "I think he must have been abused" when it's just as possible (and in many cases, more likely) that the horse has been spoiled or allowed to get away with being a bit piggish.
While of course you can't judge an individual horse's situation from comments here on a board, l'm just wondering, from your experience...do you think there more stupid or ignorant permissive people spoiling horses or true cruel bastards abusing them?
My vote, from what I see around, is more on the over permissive side. I think your average misbehaving horse has been either under handled, or mishandled through ignorance or stupidity, not deliberate cruelty. What do you think?
23 AnswersHorses1 decade agoFor those who camp with their horses, have you ever rented an annual campsite?
A friend and I are considering this option for the remainder of this year. It would be nice to have the camper there, already set up in a nice location.
What are the typical rules you've encounterd for guests and the charges they pay?
Who was considered "family" that could use your campsite if you weren't there?
What were the "conduct rules" and did you find them realistic?
What kind of troubles did you encounter that were totally unexpected? Of course it's possible to pick a site next to a person you find totally infuriating, that is a risk anytime you take on something like this...I'm wondering about other kinds of troubles we aren't considering.
Advantages?
Disadvantages?
Yeah, I think we're going to do this, so some of you may get an invite to come ride with us at our "home away from home" in Indiana. ;o)
1 AnswerHorses1 decade agoIs this typical stallion behavior, or is my friend's horse just picky?
I have been around horses most of my life, and have never seen this before.
I went to drop off my free lease mare at her new placement. They have a very nice TWH stallion. Put together very nice, looks like he's floating in gait. Great ground manners and what a gentleman. This lady gets an A++++++ for how to keep a stallion.
Anyway, I noticed a large poop pile beside the barn. I assumed it was where they dumped the wheelbarrow when they cleaned out the barn. Here comes the stallion, who turned around and pooped on top of the pile.
I joked about how convenient that was, and she said it was his poop pile. I couldn't believe it. This horse poops at the same spot every time. There was not one horse turd anywhere else in his turn out, and I'd say it was about 3/4 acre.
I've never noticed that anywhere else...have you?
17 AnswersHorses1 decade agoHas reading anothers' opinion here ever changed your position on an equine issue? NH? Bits? The "s" word?
There are so many of the same questions over and over and over again, the same answers over and over again. New users don't search the archives (not faulting them, I don't either...) so we sometimes seem to have the same conversations over and again. Not saying we need a solution or that it's a big problem, just curious about whether the debates we have over hot topics ever sway anyone one way or another.
17 AnswersHorses1 decade agoHorse owners, where would you cut corners if you absolutely had to save money and still keep your horses?
I've been talking to some of my horsie friends and have a few things we decided could be done if someone were in this situation. (I'M NOT....it's a hypothetical question)
What would you cut first?
I'm the first one to say, if you can't afford to take care of one right, you shouldn't have one...but anybody can find themself in a sudden but temporary pickle and need to save as much $$ a possible...I'm wondering what you'd cut, and in what priority.
1. Self-administer vaccinations to save the farm call
2. Learn to do a basic trim yourself
3. Switch from a branded feed to the cheaper local mix
4. Buy a lesser grade hay (not poor quality, perhaps last years' or first cut rather than second, grass rather than alfalfa)
5. Buy out of the field rather than delivery or out of the barn.
6. Discontinue supplements that aren't absolutely vital
25 AnswersHorses1 decade agoIs pelleted horse feed is easier to digest for a hard keeper?
My poor little Georgie horse is dropping weight on lush pasture, he's grained/beet pulp and supplemented daily, and was wormed on schedule.
I'm doing the double dose panacur, we're doing a fecal, the vet is coming back out, but I'm wondering about changing feeds. George was a septic foal and during his treatment, he developed gastric ulcers. We suspect scar tissue from the ulcers is possibly causing malabsorption issues.
So, I'm wondering if maybe a pelleted rather than textured feed would be easier for him to digest, and maybe he would get more nutrition from it.
13 AnswersHorses1 decade agoIs there a difference between what is considered a Tom Thumb bit in the US and the UK?
http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?PGGUID=2e8...
This is what I've always considered a Tom Thumb.
While any bit can be harsh in bad hands, I've always thought it was considered to be a mild bit...
Discuss!
6 AnswersHorses1 decade agoAnybody tried the Ariat Frog Clogs for barn chores?
I just saw them on eBay...wondering if they are indeed as wonderful as all other things Ariat?
Hoosier Horse Fair is coming up April 4, 5, & 6, I'll probably hold off until then to see what the vendors have...but I was wondering whether any of you have tried them, and what do you think?

24 AnswersHorses1 decade agoIs this the year for a third party or independent candidate to win the presidency of the US?
I'm looking at the Democrats, whose two strong candidates have polarized the party just by the nature of their competition, and a Republican candidate who does not have wide appeal to the conservative base of the party...
So, why hasn't an Independent or 3rd Party taken advantage of this and started a strong public run?
Are the low approval ratings of BOTH a Democratic Congress and a Republican President an indication that the American people are getting sick of business as usual?
8 AnswersElections1 decade agoIs it unethical or deceptive to "dress" a horse for ads in a manner that is consistant with intended use?
If you use a winner's photo from a show in your ad, the horse will likely have its hooves blacked, tail extension if used, etc.
How is that deceptive?
My friend, as part of her routine horse care, keeps their muzzles shaved and baby soft. A novice might think it was that way naturally...is she deceiving them?
Is it a seller's responsibility to educate every novice who responds to the ad of the ins and outs of the show world?
It's really obvious whether extensions and such were used for the picture when you go look at the horse and see the natural tail. So if you're a complete "Looking for Black Beauty" moron buyer, can't you ask "What happened to his tail?" when you go look? Doesn't some responsibility fall on the buyer, to notice differences and ask questions?
It would seem that the only "deception" would be if a novice or amateur asked you about the appearance and you denied an extension was used.
Opinions?
18 AnswersHorses1 decade agoHave you ever had trouble with rodent tunnels under your stalls? They have a good base, and I don't see any
rats or vermin, but I've had to fill in a few low spots that were obvious tunnels. The previous owner did not use the stalls at all, they were basically just stanchions. I'd say there hadn't been any livestock on our place for over 10 years when we bought it.
So the stalls are walled in, they're hanging doors this weekend, and I'm getting ready to put in lime dust and mats.
What kind of prep do I need to do to make sure I've flattened all the tunnels?
I say, let's hire the Amish boys to come down with shovels and "turn over" the ground/base in the stalls. Smooth it out, then add lime dust and smooth, then the mats.
Hubby wants to rent a "stamper" (the thing they use to tamp down asphalt). (I think he just wants to play with the big Man Toy...)
Any ideas?
9 AnswersHorses1 decade agoIf you were going to meet some friends at Churchill for Derby this year, what would be a good meeting place?
What if you were meeting long time pen pals or e-buddies in person for the first time? How would you recognize them? Have everyone in a wild colored hat? Design funny name tags?
4 AnswersHorses1 decade agoAny retired teachers out there know where to find an "E-Z Grader Self Adding Average Finder?"?
I have spoken with the company, the item was discontinued long ago.
I live among an Old Order Amish Community, and my neighbor is one of the teachers. He has used this device for years, but it has broken and he would like to have a replacement of some kind.
Of course, using a computer or calculator is not an option, but go ahead and have a giggle if you must.
Any ideas?
1 AnswerTeaching1 decade agoHorse folks...do you say "coronet" band, or "coronary" band?
Just wondering. I've always said "coronet" band and yes, it does bring to mind visions of trumpeters.
What do you say, and do you hear both?
20 AnswersHorses1 decade agoHorse folks - do you see much ethnic diversity in your discipline or at your barn?
My husband came home from work yesterday and asked me if I'd help one of his friends find a couple of horses this spring. I said sure, of course, his friend is a great guy and we'll have a blast riding together.
It occurred to me that I just don't see many people of color out riding horses on the trail. Is that just a regional thing?
31 AnswersHorses1 decade agoIf Kelly Tilghman were a man, would she have been fired instead of suspended compelled to apologize?
I'm dating myself a bit here, and not a golf fan at all, just noticed the story and thought of Jimmy the Greek...who at least had the excuse of being an uneducated bookie who predated the present climate of PC behavior.
Just seems a little unfair to me. I guess educated, attractive females can make little faux pas and it's excusable. Guys are just screwed. Hate it for you.
