Is this the year for a third party or independent candidate to win the presidency of the US?

I'm looking at the Democrats, whose two strong candidates have polarized the party just by the nature of their competition, and a Republican candidate who does not have wide appeal to the conservative base of the party...

So, why hasn't an Independent or 3rd Party taken advantage of this and started a strong public run?

Are the low approval ratings of BOTH a Democratic Congress and a Republican President an indication that the American people are getting sick of business as usual?

Update:

Francis...yes, that's what's likely without a strong alternative choice...but what do you think would happen with a 3rd choice? It just seems to me like a strong candidate attached to neither party would probably have the best shot ever this time.

I would really love to see what's behind door # 3, b/c the two party system is dividing our country in a really disgusting way.

People who yell and insult each other by throwing around" conservative" and "liberal" need to be slapped.

I'd like to see a candidate who would put some pride and honesty back into this country.

A genius with the power to get us out of our current cluster f#@$ would be nice too. :P

Frankly the Dems and Repubs are corporate owned. My respect would go to the man or woman brave enough to end corporate welfare and put the citizens of this country before dollars.

We aren't a nation of stupid people, I just don't understand why or how people could buy into that.

Regardless of who or what wins, I'd just be happy to see people not accept things without question, use their critical thinking skills and educate themselves rather than liquify in front of the TV.

Great question. Sorry I don't have a better answer.

If it is "the year" then these alternative candidates should have been out there campaigning since 2004.

For all their complaints about the big, uncaring and corrupt government, people continue to fail to realize that this is the government that THEY created.

Too many individuals think that their sole responsibility in government is to cast a vote now and then. If you only choose to express yourself once every four years, then how can you complain about any Presidential candidate?

Until people and parties realize that politics is a year-round thing, last-minute alternatives will remain ineffective blips.

I think people are getting sick of their "regular" candidates, and if any independent is paying attention...they might have a reasonable shot if they start slowly ramping up a campaign Jan 2009 for a 2012 run.

But...you're calling the polarisation and widespread support stuff too early. Parties will lock in step after the noms are put to bed.

nicely, while you're heavily asking.... All it rather is positive.....yet on condition that the generally occurring IQ of the vote casting individuals without warning jumped by using roughly 50-seventy 5 factors between now after which.... "Quietly efficient" stands little probability of fulfillment as a possible candidate otherwise... what's that previous saying some u . s . a . getting the leaders it "merits"???

The Dem party will pull together just fine, thank you. It's Republicans who are defecting to Obama, and the R party that's splintering. No third party candidate is going to have any significant impact, and they never will under our system.

History says that 3rd party candidates don't stand a chance.
