  • A friend had a restraining order taken out against him. I know both parties. What, if anything, can I communicate to his family?

    For the ease of discussion, let's call my male friend "John". Let's call the lady "Jane".

    I've known John for over 10 years. During that time, I have also gotten to know his family a bit.

    John and Jane met through a social group. John introduced me to Jane. I have known Jane for less than two years, perhaps even less than one but I can not recall exactly when John introduced me to Jane.

    Jane took out a restraining order against John. This was because of a first incident which allegedly occurred for which John was charged with assault and battery. Sadly, as often happens, the restraining order was a bit lax in how it was followed by both John and Jane. However, there was a second incident which allegedly occurred, and John was charged again. I am not clear exactly on what he was charged with in that particular case, but I understand the charges are much more severe, and from what Jane said to me, it definitely sounded severe. Subsequent to that second incident, the restraining order was renewed.

    Later, John is alleged to have broken that restraining order by calling Jane from a different phone number. When I first spoke to Jane, she was unfamiliar with the phone number in question. She thought it was John, but I told her to be cautious with making accusations. However, she provided me with information where I was able to verify it was John who had called her. John also allegedly texted her from that number.

    I am in touch with John's family.

  • Should I be concerned about academic integrity regarding a student I am tutoring?

    I am a tutor. Occasionally, I am asked by students, and paid, to edit papers for them, and I see no problem with this. While I prefer to go through this process in person as a method of teaching students how to better edit their own work, often, I am editing work electronically for students with communication through email and/or text messages.

    I have a student who I have been doing editing work for this week. His first paper was 20 pages long and it was very labor intensive given the quantity of errors made with grammar, punctuation, and spelling, and the need to coach how to fix up some logical flaws in the paper and how to write in a particular academic style.

    At the completion of work on that paper, he had asked me to edit another paper for him. The difficulties I witnessed in the first paper were largely absent from the second, and although the second paper was only half as long as the first, it took me less than one eighth of the time to correct it and give feedback.

    It seems to me that there is the distinct possibility that the first paper and the second paper were not written by the same student since they did not exhibit the same degree or type of writing challenges. I have not met this student in person. All of my work with this student has been conducted electronically. I expect to be paid for this work this coming week.

    Because I have made observations about the second paper being qualitatively different from the first, and therefore believe that one of these may not be the student's own work, what, if any, are my obligations for dealing with this situation?

  • Which vitamin D3 supplements are pure and safe?

    My doctor has recommended that I take 2000 IU of vitamin D3 a day. I am concerned with purchasing random supplements since I know they are NOT regulated in the USA. How do I know which brand of supplement really contains what it says it does? Which brands should I choose or avoid?

  • How do I report a spam email message I receive which entices me to view a facebook page?

    I received an email message on my Yahoo email. The message attempts to get me to click on a link to a facebook app. I have not clicked on it, but I believe the app is most likely malicious, especially since I do not use that email address for facebook at all.

    Facebook provides several places to report content within facebook, but I was not able to find any way to report content on facebook which I was spammed about when the spam did not originate on facebook itself. Where and how should I report such spam?

  • I'm doing some research for a friend. Is a Section 8 Voucher issued in one state usable in another state?

    My friend is in the state of NY. She is looking to make a move to another state and wants to know if her Section 8 Voucher which she already has will be available to use in another state without going back on a wait list.

    I believe I have heard before that this is possible, but I am not an expert on this topic, and I would like an opinion or information about this from somebody who really knows the ins-and-outs of Section 8. Is it a factor of the type of voucher she has, or is there something else she needs to pay close attention to as she undergoes this transition for herself? If so, what details should she be aware of in this process?

  • Do you have any ideas for a final project for a math class?

    I am tutoring a student in a Survey of Mathematics class. As part of this class, the student is required to put together a final project, and the instructions from the professor were very open-ended, basically saying that project should be a creative expression of some of the mathematical concepts covered in the class as they relate to a particular profession of your choice. The preferred medium will be a Microsoft Powerpoint presentation, an area which my student is skilled at putting together. However, both of us are feeling a little stumped as to where to begin as this seems a little too open-ended for us to get our minds around.

    Keeping in mind that each topic was covered at the basic level, topics covered in this class have included:

    * Number theory and the real number system

    * Sets

    * Algebra

    * Graphs

    * The Metric System

    * Geometry

    * Probability

    * Statistics (two chapters)

    An example was provided where a previous student (or perhaps the professor or school as an example) utilized a recipe which the student then described a direct relationship between the ingredients for the recipe and a desire to double the recipes ingredients and quantity.

    I suspect that we might want an equivalent write-up of between one and two pages with a normal 12-point font. From there, we can put together this presentation in probably 5 or 6 pages as a presentation with larger font and graphics to go along with it.

    Can anybody offer some suggestions of topic areas we might try to explore when putting this together? I will help him put this together, but neither one of us has any idea where to start.

  • What is the role of expected value in the real world?

    I am a math tutor who has been working with a particular math student for the last 2 months. This student is taking a "Survey of Mathematics with Applications" class. So far, I have been very successful working with this student through number theory, sets, algebra, geometry, and the metric system. The next two sections involve probability and statistics, areas I am pretty much learning from his text book which he lent me. (I was up front that I would need the book to learn this so I could tutor in it.)

    I'm currently reading through these sections and now have a good understanding of both probability and odds. I understand how these concepts exist and how they work in the real world, so I consider myself ready to tutor in these areas.

    I am struggling, however, with the idea of Expected Value (expectation) and Fair Price. In particular, Expected Value seems to rely on a wide array of potential unknown circumstances which, nonetheless, have either odds or probability applied to them. Although the circumstances may be known, and the probability or odds of those circumstances happening (or not happening) may be known, what is the mathematical value in being able to make these calculations? To me, it seems like guessing at unknown quantities.

    I think I understand the concept of Fair Price to be the price you would have to pay per attempt in order to break even on a particular game of chance over a long period of time. What I don't understand is what, exactly, expected value means. Also, why is it important to know what the expected value is?

    Any illumination on these topics would be greatly appreciated.

  • What is the most professional way to fire a client?

    I am an independent contractor with two different employment focuses. For one of these, I tutor people in various academic subjects. For the other, I ghostwrite letters for people. It is odd, therefore, that I am even asking this question, but I do feel that being involved in this situation personally and professionally, I want to be as clear-headed as I can be, and I am finding that very difficult at the moment.

    I have a client for whom I am ghostwriting letters who has so far eaten up enormous amounts of my time. I spent 19 hours between consultation and writing on one very complex job for him, and he paid me only $100. He then offered me another job for which he has agreed to pay me $250, with his premise being that between the two jobs, I should come out evenly. I am growing increasingly more convinced that this is a highly unlikely possibility. The second job will not be completed for a few months out as I am not the only person working on it. I am doing one piece of it, but not the whole project. He has also asked me to do several smaller side-projects for him and has not paid me for any of those, completely ignoring the notion that my time is valuable to me as a professional.

    I recently did some math and determined that if I was to charge my regular rate for services rendered, I would be due at least $600. Some of the work was done under fairly rushed circumstances as he had a looming deadline he had to meet, and I know some contractors would charge more for rush service, but I had the available time and knew I could complete the job within the deadline, even though his situation was extremely complex. I did, and he expressed that he was very pleased with my efforts.

    My primary issue with this client is his lack of respect for the time I have put into working for him. I do have a Terms of Service which I highlight on my business web site which describes the rates I charge. My usual rate is a combination between time and output: $15 per hour, plus $25 per typed page. I reiterate my pricing scheme in all of my advertising as well as the first consultation I have with my clients. Interestingly, I set up that pricing scheme to be able to minimize the possibility of working with clients who lack respect for my time, and in general, my clients have been very satisfied with my work and extremely respectful. A few of them have even paid me more than I would have charged because they were extremely grateful for my efforts. This is my first "problem client".

    I've drafted a letter I intend to send via postal mail to my problem client, but which I want to sit on for a few days to make sure my head is clear and I am maintaining professionalism. In the letter, I lay out my concerns for my time (again!), my mathematical calculations for my current hourly wage working for him, and what is essentially an ultimatum: I need to be paid for the time I have worked for him, or I am terminating my professional relationship with him. I am still willing to be paid over time, something which he has outright rejected because he doesn't want me to be hounding him, but I am willing to work with that if necessary.

    There are other confidential things about my client which he has disclosed to me for a job I have pledged to do for him which make this an even more difficult situation for me to handle. I am, therefore, very concerned about the negative professional repercussions of firing my client.

    I really don't want to fire my client, but my frustration is making it increasingly more difficult for me to keep a professional decorum when dealing with him. He gets extremely frustrated when I bring up my concerns for how much he is paying me and when he will be paying me. I get frustrated that he seems to lack any concern for my concerns.

    Basically, I see no alternative other than to fire him as I believe, under the present circumstances, I can not remain adequately professional in my dealings with him. I also believe that he is the kind of person who will need to understand my reasons in some detail, but I do not trust that he will be professional in his response.

    Can anybody offer me any guidance or suggestions for the best way to handle this? Do you think I am going about this the right way? Would you do things differently or similarly?

    Any response would be greatly appreciated.

  • I have a valid license. Where can I get a Windows XP Home Premium ISO image file?

    Hi! I am trying to provide some technical support to a friend who has a license for Windows XP Home Premium. However, something is really messed up with the system right now. It seems to me the only way to fix their system is to simply reinstall from scratch, but they do not have a Windows XP Home Premium CD. However, they do have an OEM license for the software.

    To clarify, I am not looking for warez or anything illegal. Just an ISO from which I can reinstall their software.

    Is anybody aware of where I might find an image file so I can reinstall this person's system, and/or anything else I should be aware of in this process?

  • Is there an inpatient eating disorder clinic in the Boston, MA area that takes the following insurance?

    I am doing some research for somebody, and I am seeking an inpatient eating disorder clinic in the Boston, MA area. The person is covered under Medicare, Parts A, B, and D. They are also covered under Medicaid from the state of NY. They would be coming not to move to Boston, but to stay only for the duration of their treatment.

    I've called a bunch of places and have found that Medicare is accepted anywhere by all Medicare providers although a lot of places do not take Medicare at all. Medicaid seems to have a lot more restrictions involved, so I am hoping the Yahoo Answers community can help me out here.

    Thanks in advance!

  • If I am going to advertise on facebook. Which will likely gain me better results: per click or per impression?

    I am brand new to the world of online advertising. I have a couple of businesses I have started up essentially as an independent contractor. These are two completely separate businesses, utilising different skill sets. I have a website for one of these businesses so far, and I believe the best way to grow this business at this time is through advertising. (The other will probably grow better via word-of-mouth.)

    I have chosen to advertise on facebook because I believe a lot of people who will require my skills are already on that web site. My choices seem to be among the following: pay per click, or pay per (thousand) impressions.

    Can people share with me their experience using one or both of those strategies? At this time, my gut instinct tells me I would get more bang for my buck paying for impressions rather than per click, but as I said, I am brand new to the world of online advertising.

  • How do I get Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit to stop trying to hide files and directories on me?

    This is getting really annoying. Right now, I am trying to install some software which will interface with Apache Web Server for a development environment on my laptop. This additional installer can, and does, configure itself to work with Apache. However, it requires that I designate path information in some boxes during the install process.

    I can clearly see, if I go into a DOS box by way of running CMD, that these files and directories do exist. However, using the GUI of Windows, and seperately of the installer, these files and directories appear to be hidden and/or do not exist. Therefore, although the software I am installing is capable of self-interfacing with the Apache Web Server, I can not get it to do since the installer can not find the neccessary files and directories.

    As my question says, how do I get Windows out of my way so I can see every file and directory all of the time so I need not worry about this stuff?

    If it means anything, I am running this on a HP G71-340US Notebook laptop with Windows 7 Home Premiium 64 bit.

  • I have a question about making a claim regarding a securities litigation class action lawsuit.?

    So I received a notice in the mail about a company I own some stock in. I am glad there was a class action lawsuit against the company, because I believe the company made some material misstatements about their business operations which, if I had known, I definitely would not have bought shares in the company.

    The notice I received claims I need proof of purchase of shares of the company (I have that) and also either of the following:

    * proof of sale of shares

    * proof of ownership of shares at a specific date

    I did not sell my shares in this company, though certainly I am wishing I had at a certain point in time. I seem to have misplaced some of my brokerage account statements. Must I provide a copy of my brokerage statement from the specified period in the class action lawsuit (February 23, 2009), or would a current brokerage statement suffice? How specific do I need to be with this documentation?

    Any help woiuld be greatly appreciated.

  • How do you prevent yourself from being pigeonholed out of a potential job position by a recruiter?

    In my "prior life", I worked in retail for about 7 years. I have been unemployed since 2006 due to a variety of personal and family problems which needed to be attended to. Now that I am looking to re-enter the workforce, like millions of other people, I am finding that competition for jobs is unusually fierce.

    I just got off the telephone with a recruiter at a large national bank with whom I was speaking about an open teller position the bank was looking to hire for. I believe the customer service and cashiering skills I picked up from working in retail are highly applicable to any job I might be interested in. I gave a few examples of how I used those skills to go above and beyond, as I always did, in the last job I had.

    I thought I had given a pretty good presentation on the phone. However, the recruiter ended the call by telling me that she thought I would be better suited to working in a retail environment, not a banking environment. Honestly, I do not wish to work in retail again. (I did not tell the recruiter that.)

    So now to my question: Is there a tactful and constructive way to either prevent myself from being pigeonholed into a position I am not seeking nor wanting, or alternatively, to prove in a telephone interview that I don't need to be pigeonholed into such a "career" track?

  • In Windows 7 Home Premium, how do I remove a file type association?

    There appears to be an easy way to create file type associations (Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Programs -> Default Programs -> Set Associations) but there appears to be no way to remove these associations. It seems only possible to change a file type association once created, but I want to remove the association altogether. How can I do this?

  • In Windows 7 Home Premium, where on my hard drive can I find items in the Start Menu?

    I'm a previous user of Windows 2000, an OEM version which came with my Dell Dimension 4100 which recently experienced a HD crash (don't worry, I have a backup of all of my data), and just bought a laptop (HP G71-340US) with Windows 7 Home Premium OEM pre-bundled. I also have at hand a retail copy of Windows XP Pro which I purchased at retail. I'm considering setting this system up as a duel boot machine, but in the mean time, I'm very frustrated by my inability to make my Start Menu more user friendly, particularly with regard to the Program Files section. Under Windows 2000, I was able to locate where the Start Menu was stored (under "Documents and Settings/User Account/Start Menu" (or something similar)with whatever the user account name happened to be) and from there, I could do things like add shortcuts directly to the Start Menu, or create directories (folders) for short cuts within the Start Menu to make navigating my applications and documents a bit easier to handle. There seems to be no similarly easy way to do this under Windows 7 Home Premium, unless I have managed to miss it. (Quite possibly I have, which is what brings me here.)

    Can somebody enlighten me as to where, on the hard drive, I might find a record of items stored under the Start Menu so that I might be better able to manage my programs and documents I can find there?

  • Windows 2000 upgrading to XP Pro: a few questions?

    I'm working off of a Dell Dimension 4100. I souped it up to 512MB RAM (maximum capacity for the machine) and I also have a 200GB HD I installed, with my original 60GB as a secondary HD. In order to get the 200GB HD to work, I had to install an I/O card of some sort, which came with the 200GB drive itself, since Dell, in its infinite wisdom, decided not to waste precious dollars or time on customer service by upgrading the Dimension 4100 BIOS to be compatible with larger hard drives. (Secondarily to this question, anybody know of a third-party BIOS which might do the trick for me and not otherwise destroy my machine?)

    So anyway, I want to upgrade from 2000 to XP Pro. There are a large number of unresolved security issues with 2000 which, it seems, Microsoft has decided not to patch, including all of the problems associated with Internet Explorer 6. (I'm going to avoid Vista until it becomes a secondary product. Microsoft always seems to come out with new software only when the old one is actually stable enough to use.)

    Ideally, what I think I want to do, at least initially, is create a clean partition (I haven't used up all of my 200GB HD, and have a fair portion of it unpartitioned right now and I also have a commercial copy of Partition Magic which I purchased brand new at the time) and install XP Pro onto that partition. For what its worth, I am booting on an NTFS partition for Windows 2000 right now.

    So here are my questions:

    1. Can one set up a computer to dual boot different versions of windows, and if so, how? (preferably without any additional commercial software)

    2. I've read rumours about a hardware compatibility checking program, but no reference to where I can find it. Can somebody please point me in the right direction for that?

    3. Are there any other important pieces of information I should be aware of before I do this (other than make a good backup of data first) or additional things I should consider?

    Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
