ACDE/ADCI/IMCA Saturation Diver as well a Diving Medical Technician (DMT) My motto "Fundamental Understanding Saves Lives"

  • Diving & Hot showers, is this the answer?

    Feb 13, 2010 at 10:28 am

While moviebuff may be on the right track, he like most instructors can only spout off what they have read. I do this for a living, I have run more chambers, seen more cases of DCS in all it's forms and been bent myself. Like most divers we tend to be hardheaded and defensive of our training and knowledge but, failure to learn is what spreads disinformation and causes deaths. To infer that I read an article in a recreational publication and then decided to hold a quiz, is insulting. I maintain a standard of training that you would pray for if you took a hit, so take a lesson.

Vasodilation: An expansion of the veins and arteries causing an increase in the flow of blood. For our purposes caused by a hot shower after a dive. Basic physics show us that if thing are heated they expand. Gas law supports this as well.

Most of the "no-no's" the masses spout as precursers for DCI such as, Alcohol consumption, dehydration, smoking, etc. have three things at their core. Vasodilation, Vasoconstriction, and/or a change in the "surface tension" or thickness of the blood.

While the body may "on-gas" faster when the tissues are cold it's not a major issue because recreational tables are conservative enough to address the slight increase in the rate. The rapid and massive vasodilation occuring from exposure to hot water can cause a rapid and massive "off-gas" of remaining inert gas, resulting in DCI. Charles' law basically states if you heat a gas, it will expand. So, the increase in flow and bubble formation could overwhelm the pulmonary system abilities.

  • Why should you NOT take a hot shower after a deep and/or long SCUBA dive?

  • Commercial Divers & Tech Divers what is your deep air limit?

I know where the PPO2 limits are and don't need any lectures on deep air. What I'm looking for is your personal comfort level as far as narcosis is concerned.

As a working diver having been exposed to high partial pressures of O2 for extended periods of time(i.e. mixed gas dives with surface decompression) I feel comfortable with my risk to the maximum (220fsw) for short exposure however, I find narcosis too unmanageable past 190fsw. Admittedly, if I dove more deep air I may find it more manageable but there's more productivity in being gassed.

    Whats your take?

  • What ever happened to debating a topic?

Now somebody gets their feelings hurt or thinks that just because someone doesn't agree, they're not listening.

Then they go schoolyard and tattle to the teacher, "I'm reporting you, naaahh!"

What gives? Maybe you need to grow up?

  • Are "Reputable Breeders" destroying our favorite breeds?

Changes in appearance, once subtle are not so any more. The diversity between what one expects a certain breed to look and act like and the "standard" has seemingly widened into the Grand Canyon.

I personally feel that "reputable" or "show" breeders are killing the working breeds and making it impossible for the average person to find a quality animal, let alone afford one.

I have maintained my own "bloodline" so to speak for almost 20 years. These dogs are beautiful examples of their breed and hunt from day one as though they were born for it. It's rare that I breed but, when I do I've never had a problem placing thses pups and I usually can break even at about $400 a pup.

  • Why do black people feel they need to intimidate others?

Doesn't work on me but, I see it used alot as a means of control, in my opinion. It's also amazing how quickly they realize it's not working on a certain person and change tactics. I find it especially pronounced in the younger generation, any ideas?

  • Why can't people mind their own business?

It's seem that lately I have been a magnet for unsolicited advice and interruption. For instance, My father is in intensive care and on the verge of passing. My son wanted to see him but, the hospitals have banned children because of Flu season. I took him into the lobby to see about an exemption (which are available in certain situations) and no less than four people yelled at me to take him outside. All while I was talking with a hospital representative and in the process of obtaining the excemption paperwork. The situation escalated when some very unintelligent person decided to put his hands on me. If you have nothing to do with or don't understand a situation, keep your f**kin mouth SHUT!

    Just friendly advice.

  • Can girlfriends mom throw me out?

About a year ago, I left my apartment and moved in with my girlfriend. We live in a house that she and her mother bought together as an investment. Her mother all of a sudden decided that my character was in question because of my choice of career and a tiff with my mother concerning my fathers health. She sent me a letter stating that I should tell my girlfriend I need to help my mom and that I was moving out. She also asked that I hide her involvement from my girlfriend for her protection. We have no lease agreement and my girlfriend is pissed at her mother. Her mother has given me 20 days to vacate. She has also hinted that I am not a good role model for her grandson. We live in Virginia and I want to know if she can really ask me to leave . Her daughter and I are scrambling to locate another place to go.HELP
