  • Why do beta blockers treat HTN when beta adrenoreceptors vasodilate blood vessels?

In the sympathetic nervous system there's functional antagonism between the alpha and beta adrenoreceptors. Alpha predominates and causes blood vessels to vasoconstrict and beta causes blood vessels to vasodilate. Why then are drugs that end in -olol (beta blockers) used to treat HTN if blocking the beta receptor will block vasoconstriction? Does it block the effects of both components of the sympathetic NS?

  • How can I congratulate dad for quitting smoking?

My dad quit cold turkey after many years of smoking LARGE amounts of cigarettes. I'd like to congratulate him somehow. Not with a cake though b/c quitters tend to gain weight due to increased appetite so I don't want to promote weight gain.

  • I've been dating a guy for 6 months and he hasn't asked me to be his girlfriend yet.?

Do you think he's "Getting away" with getting the full benefits of having a girlfriend without the official title and without any obligations/commitments? Should I be less "lenient"?

  • I am in a relationship with an emotionally unavailable person, what do I do?

It has been over a year that I have been in a relationship with an emotionally unavailable man. I have only recently come upon the term and have done research and I am convinced this is who he is. This means that, he has had a traumatic experience in his past that has left him to be "cold" and distant. He doesn't express his feelings and thinks that vulnerability, and expression of your feelings= weakness. He rarely shows emotions and deals with arguments and problems by closing up and ignoring me. Walking away, shutting down, or ignoring me/situation is his natural way of shelling up and dealing with negative things. He thinks having sex is an emotional connection when I see it more as a physical connection. When we hang out, it doesn't feel like quality time because he is always engaged w/ the TV or his phone. It feels like he is always 1/2 there. I read that spouses/people who are in relationships with E.U. people often feel neglected, worthless, unloved. This is precisely how I feel. I care about him and have brought up all of these issues and laid it on the table. He told me that he would like to change but I feel that the process is almost impossible because he has been like this for what seems like over 10 years now. If i decide to stay with him and try to be with him, I have to accept the fact that I will often feel neglected or unloved and I have to be understanding of him. He shows love by buying material things but this doesn't fill my love tank. He is aware of how I feel but sees it as a pressuring demand and neediness so he draws away even more. We have run into this problem over and over. We are both barely hanging on to the relationship. Is it best to just end it now or should I continue being there for him?
