  • Father controls adult daughter s diet?

I have a friend - trust me, not me - whose dad has this habit of telling what she can and can t eat and how much she can eat. More recently at a get together, my friend was going to have a slice of cake and her father came up behind her and said, "You haven t had dinner yet." He then cut her a slice but he only gave her half of it and then he ate the rest.

My friend isn t super fit, but she s not obese either. Every time she has a doctor s appointment, her doctor is never worried about her weight because she doesn t fluctuate drastically and her blood work always returns healthy. She has a relatively healthy diet. She cooks at home often. She walks as often as she can. She isn t trying to lose weight currently because she feels like she s be doing it to make her parents happy and to "look" better in clothes, both of which she said, would not make her happy. She s happy the way she is and that already took years of overcoming emotional abuse from her grandmother (who passed away years ago).

She s embarrassed by this part dynamic with her father and it constantly happens in both private and public situations. How can she bring this up to father without him feeling disrespected?

  • How to help a young girl with Bipolar disorder.?

I'm a girls' youth counselor at my church and I'm concerned for the well-being of a young girl at my church. The last time I saw her was four months ago at camp (I attend university full-time out of town). I'd just learned that she was diagnosed as bipolar which helped shed light on her behavioral problems that she'd been having nearly her entire life (I've known her for about 13 years). I came back for my Christmas break and I almost didn't recognize her. When I left, she had to have been at least 100 pounds (you'd hug and be afraid to snap her in half; now she's gained at least 30-40 pounds and looks tired and defeated, almost like she's checked out. I asked my mother about her and she told me that she was on a new medication that doesn't seem to be improving her mental health and is actually making her worse.

Her home environment is not the best. One of her brothers is also bipolar and they often get into fights, with the last fight causing her to nearly kill her brother. Her mother doesn't speak kindly to them; she will either yell at them, threaten them, or talk to them like they're adults. Her step-father is in the picture, but I'm not sure how big of a role he plays in their lives.

This young girl is visibly suffering and I'd like to know how to better help her.

  • Why does my dog lick his paws weeks after grooming?

I have a five year old male schnoodle (schnauzer/poodle mix) and usually in the summer, I get him shaved down - no schnauzer cut or styling, just completely shaved so his hair won't grow too fast and make him overheat (I live is the desert area of SoCal). But I've noticed that whenever I get him groomed, he obsessively licks his paws for weeks after getting groomed. His groomer is really amazing. His groomer rarely nicks him and I'm really happy about that, but the licking has been a problem for the last three years and I've noticed that it's gotten worse this past year.

If I'm not paying close attention, then my dog will probably keep licking his paws non-stop for almost an hour, but he usually stops whenever I tell him stop, and then he tries licking them again. I don't know what to do. I have a cone collar, but I can't put it on him all day because I'm not home all day and he can't get outside through the doggy door. I'll also add that he has had serious issues before, both with PetSmart (PSA - don't go there; cheap price = cheap service). Two years ago, he got nicked on his bum, and licked it so much that it developed into an abscess which resulted in a minor surgery and a nearly $200 vet bill. The second time, one of his hid paws was nicked between the pads and he licked it raw which got treated again by his vet. I don't want to have him go through this again. Can you please help me?

  • My Dad… let's start there…?

I love my dad, but he has some qualities that have gotten worse.

    1) He talks too much - I recently graduated high school and it's gotten worse. He just keeps saying the EXACT SAME THING but it different syntax. And he does this about everything, like stupid informercials or stupid reality shows. He also does this when giving me advice. And the worse part is that be knows be talks too much and he won't do anything about. I tried bringing it up once and he got upset to point of crying and saying that I was ungrateful.

    2) He doesn't know when to stop an old joke - one time I'd gotten something in the mail and he kept joking that it was his because it "Current Resident" on the address. This lasted for a good 15 minutes and I was clearly getting fed up, even my mom was annoyed with him. When finally gave in he hit my with the box (really hard) and said I shouldn't get so worked up then he apologized for hitting me but he clearly didn't mean it. The following day I asked him stop old jokes and he started crying!

I remember being little and happy whenever he was off work, but now I do my best to avoid him. I really need help with him. I'm leaving for college in a month and Im really relieved and happy that I'm leaving but I don't want to be. What do I do?

  • My "friend" is a fake, a liar, and bossy?

I know that the title of this question seems like a rhetorical question, but I just had to ask. So I've known this girl for nine years and when we first met in the second grade, we did NOT like each other. When we grew a little older, we'd sometimes hang out but that became a rare thing because I realized that she was bossy, childish, and never kept her word. Last year, we were preparing for a banquet and an older women came into the kitchen for a while to prepare something else. While in there, my "friend" started acting (sickeningly) sweet; when the women left, she asked me if she had sucked up to the woman enough. I just looked at her and went back to my work; I was so pissed of at how aware she was that she was a fake. During the same banquet, she assumed the role of leader, even though there were two other clear-cut leaders. She ended yelling at everyone who didn't move fast enough for her - even at the leaders; then afterwards, she tells everyone "You know you love me," in the same sweet voice and carries on as if nothing happened.

The final straw for me was last year at a beach we went to. Again, she made herself the leader and treated everyone like slaves even though she 100% capable of doing everything asked of her. Later on, the camp leaders took her aside and she later apologized to everyone in the camp. Unfortunately, the following month I realized that everything the leaders said went in one ear and out the other. She was back to her normal self.

(I know the explanation was long, but thanks for reading it anyway.) I'm done with all the crap she's put me through over the past years and I'm ready to move on from this relationship. I know it sounds harsh, but this is a relationship I can DEFINITELY live without. Every time she acts this way, I feel compelled to tell her how I feel and end this relationship, but I can never get around to it. If another chance comes up, how should I approach it?

  • I think he likes me, but I'm not sure?

I have a crush on someone and I think he has one one me too, but I can't tell. We have only one class together and he always sits next to me, he touches his knee to mine, and he sometimes leans his head on my shoulder. Yesterday he held my hand and interlocked our fingers. Is it possible that he likes me too?

  • I take Advil for tooth pain caused by braces, but my mom thinks I'm abusing them?

I'm not complaining about the fact that they still hurt, so here's the deal: I'm a night grinder and I have and overbite. So to prevent the brackets on my back teeth from falling off, I had deep bite posterior turbos put in. Well, I saw a video on YouTube of how they're applied and the technician did NOT apply them this and the turbos are uncomfortable. I can't bite down at all. So because I grind, when I wake up, my back teeth are in pain and to relieve it, I take Advil and so far I take one almost every morning, and towards the evening because I'm relearning how to eat solid foods, so I only two on an almost daily basis and ONLY when I need to. But my mom, on the other hand, doesn't believe me. I've told her already that I take one in the morning because of my grinding and one in the evening because of the solid foods and she looks at and talks to me as though I were an addict. How do I get her to understand me?

  • What to do about my students?

So here's the deal. My mom and i are the teachers for our church's morning Sunday school class and we are tired! Here the rundown of our students. (Names changed to protect identities... lol)

1.) Justin Ming: 11 years old. The class clown. Generally well behaved, but when he acts like a clown and gets attention from the students, it's hard to get him to stop.

2.) Lucy Ming: 9 years old. A cheater. We (my mom and I) always have to tell to stop giving the other kids the answers to questions.

3.) Jeremy Ming: 6 years old. A complete tomboy. He's always running around the room, kicking the other kids chairs, and whenever he's taken downstairs to his parents, he becomes a deadweight.

4.) Leigh Adams: 12 years old. An unmotivated emo-like child. Whenever we tell her to study, she defiantly tells us she won't. It took us two months to get to do work that should have been done last year. Plus she always fighting with her brother Michael.

5.) Michael Adams: 10 years old. He not really a problem. We just need him to stop fighting with Leigh.

6.) Mary Morgan: 9 years old. An attention craver. She's always attempting to tale charge of the class and whenever she knows an answer to a question and it's NOT her turn to answer, she will jump up and down in her seat and flail her legs and arms around.

7.) Moses Adams: 10 years old. He is always making up excuses in order to get out of studying, i.e.- "I have really bad asthma." Well, kid, so do I and yet I'm here teaching you, am I not? ... just sayin'...

8.) Samantha Davis: 9 years old. She's generally a good student, but whenever she gets a wrong answer to ONE question, she has an attitude for the rest of the class.

Yeah... so those are our problem children and unfortunately they make up 73% of our class (yes, I did the math). Before you comment on the ages, which ranges from 4years to 12 years, we're aware that that most likely contributes to our problems. Here's the thing, no one in our church is willing to take the younger children, and the ones who are willing are unfit to teach them. Also I keep trying to convince my mom to have either individual parent/teacher meetings or one big meeting with the parents and discuss the problems. She keeps saying she will, but she's been saying that since November and since then, the students have gotten worse. Can anyone give my mom and I advice until we can get someone to else to help us? Thanks...

  • My best friend is constantly fighting with her parents?

So... my best friend (who also recently became my cousin-in-law :) ) is always fighting with her parents. She is fourteen years old and there is an average of a 43 year age difference between her and her parents. Anyway, every time I hear her talk to her dad or her mom, they're always fighting or their talks always end up being a fight. But sometimes I can understand why. Her father has told her before that he doesn't understand her and wants her to dress more girly (my friend is a bit of a tomboy). My friend has even told me that the relationship feels more like a "stepfather/stepdaughter" relationship than a "father/daughter" relationship, and if you were to see how the interact with each other, you'd agree completely. Now with her mother, it's also like a "stepmother/stepdaughter" relationship. She is always nitpicking at my friend about how she dresses. Because of her relationship with her parents, my friend has a VERY short fuse and gets irritated so easily, it's ridiculous. I always feel awkward when they're together and I feel like I should say something, but I don't know if I should or what to do. Can someone help me?

  • What bad habits do/have you have/had while singing? How did you break them?

    Here are mine:

    1) I try to clear my throat as discreetly as possible WHILE I'm singing, but sometimes my dad can hear when I do it.

    2) I roll my eyes when I feel as though I've made a mistake.

  • My Sony MP3 player won't load my iTunes playlist properly?

I have a Sony MP3 player (model number: NWZ-S544) and I'm trying to load one of my iTunes playlist onto it, but it keeps loading the songs out of order. First, I tried loading the songs individually onto the player and it load the first to two songs in order, but after three more songs, they were all out of order. The thing is it keeps showing in the folder that they are in order. Second, I tried to burn the list onto a cd but most of the music is too long for the cd (and I don't have any other cd with more time on it). How do I get my music on my MP3 in order?

  • What are these hand motions while singing?

I was watching this video of Patti LuPone during her rehearsal for "Matters of the Heart" and she was moving her hands, not like sign language, but not regular hand gestures. Why was she doing it?

  • Which "Mrs. Lovett" from Sweeney Todd do you like best and why?

    1. Angel Lansbury (from the original 1979 Broadway cast)

    2. Patti LuPone (in the 2001 concert)

    3. Helena Bonham Carter (in Tim Burton's 2007 movie musical thriller)

    4. Patti LuPone (in John Doyle's 2005 Broadway Revival)

*I personally like both of Patti LuPone's performances, but I really love her in John Doyle's version. It was the perfect balance of sweet, yet diabolical enough to think of cannibalism to hide Todd's murders. I'm not a fan of Angela's performance. It was too goofy and silly for my taste. As for Helena, I was quite surprised at her singing voice. She's no LuPone, but I wouldn't mind listening to her sing over and over again: although, in my opinion, Tim's version of "Sweeney Todd lacks the comedy I loved from the stage version. Just sayin'...

  • How to get job while being homeschooled?

I'm a junior in high school and I'm homeschooled. I'm studying to get my driver's permit and later my license by the time I'm a senior. I'm planning to apply for some part-time jobs soon. My parents are supportive of my plans, but there's a problem: we only have two cars, both my parents work, and buying a third car is out of the question. I thought about having friends come to pick me up in case I did get a job, but most of them either have jobs, are loaded with AP homework, have extracurriculur activities, or live too far away to pick me up. What should I do?

  • I lose my voice when I have to read in front of people?

I know how to read and I read very well (in 1st grade, I read at a 5th grade level). I'm very confident in my reading abilities, but for some reason whenever I HAVE to read (i.e. - an oral report of any kind) or I volunteer to read (i.e.- reading a Scripture passage in youth group), my vocal cords begin to feel tight and my voice becomes raspy and quiet. I don't feel nervous, jittery, or like my heart is beating fast. I'm getting tired of this possible speech impediment and I want to get rid of it. Help me!
