Did I miss something?

I work at a grocery store. It's a popular little place and is usually very busy. As a cashier, I not only have to ring in purchases, I also have to do prep work such as bagging beans,spinach, arugula etc.In short, we basically have to keep busy.

HOWEVER, there is one girl who just started working there, she is annoying and has gotten (myself included) the cashiers in trouble for not helping a customer. She is an open book and finds it necessary to spew out every little detail of her life...things that no one really wants to know about.

She takes out her cell phone and texts people and tells me stories while I'm ringing in purchases and greeting customers. It's extremely distracting and I have almost messed up people's purchases because of her. Also I think that she is one of those people that don't really understand "personal space".

So, can anyone PLEASE give me some ideas about how to deal with her in an non-confrontational way. It's my first job and I am definitely not willing to get fired! Please help.

I'm from a suburb close to the city, both of these places are clearly not bustling types of towns. Is anyone out there that goes to either of these places and is from a city? Is it boring, what is there to do?

Any answer to any question would be greatly appreciated.
