  • Never flown... Any tips?

I'm planning a trip from the northern USA to South America and have never flown before. I'm tall (six foot one inch) and and in my mid 50's. One of the legs of the trip is at least 11 hours in the air, so I am concerned about being in a cramped painful condition for the entire flight. I have a choice of several trip options all within a couple hundred dollars:

Delta with Airbus A319 and Boeing 767

Delta with Airbus A320 and Boeing 737

United with Boeing 767 and another unknown plane.

Do I have any options for what seat I am on? Can I pay more for more leg room?

Can I bring any food aboard? How about water?

Any other tips before I book a ticket, maybe things to bring on board?

  • Can I receive fax when I've already answered?

So, I answered the phone thinking that there was a real person on the other end, but it turns out that someone is trying to send me a fax. Is there some way that I can tell my HP 8500 printer/scanner/fax to start recieving the fax, or do I need to just hang up and hope the sender calls back? But what if the next call really is a real person that needs to talk to me, and they just get the fax??

  • Why should i buy a Mac?

Why should I buy another Mac?

I have owned an ibook G4 for 6 years, and it has worked well, never had a virus. But I’m tired of never being able to get software for a Mac, never getting Hulu, always several years late on Quicken, etc. and not being able to access sites like my bank or retirement fund, because their encryption won’t recognize apple’s safari or firefox version.

When I can get a Dell or HP for half the cost of a new apple laptop, why should I stay with Mac??

  • What is the cheapest way to get streaming radio?

I live in a remote rural area with no radio reception. I do have internet however, and since there are many stations streaming online, I could connect with a "whole house transmitter" which would rebroadcast the station so that I could receive it with various radios in the house. My question is: What is the best way to get a continuous streaming signal, 24/7? I don't want to but a computer to use solely for this task, and most of the internet radios that I have read about don't have good reviews. Any Ideas?

How well has the Monte Carlo model done in the current recession? Is what we are going through outside of the parameters of the program if you made assumptions a year ago?

  • Can I play two streaming audio stations at once?

I would like to play more than one streaming audio station. Can I route one through the earphone jack and another through a different port? I want to be able to route them to different areas in my house. Is this possible with one computer using two open websites?

  • What to do to make the world a better place...?

My wife asked me what I was going to do to make the world a better place after I retire.

It’s such a simple question, but it has deep philosophical thought involved in the answer. True, I currently work at a position that makes the world a better place (or at least a small section of it) but many of the things that one would think of, and that I’ve seen written on these pages, such as recycling, buying locally produced products, growing my own food, etc, are actually lessening my impact on the planet, not actually improving it.

Her original question was meant to get me interested in volunteering somewhere, or something along those lines.

Sure you could say “join the peace corps” or something similar, but I’m thinking of a couple of more basic fundamental questions:

    - Is lessening one’s own impact actually making the world better, or just less bad?

    - How does one rank the effectiveness of his efforts in making the world a better place, especially considering limited financial resources?

    - If you could only do a few things, where would you start?

  • Will Quicken version 13.0 (Mac) work with OS 10.5?

I just found out that Turbotax won't work with my current OS (10.3.8 / Panther), but before upgrading to 10.5 (Leopard) I would like to know if my Mac version of Quicken (13.0) will become obsolete with the Leopard.

Any experience with this??? How about other programs that are problems??

  • What's the best used Pickup Truck?

I need a pickup to replace my old '79 Ford. I need a full size bed, and something dependable with good gas milage. I don't drive it a lot, but I live in a very rural location, and I do all of the repairs and maintenance myself.

Four wheel drive would be nice, but not if it is a maintenance nighhtmare.

I plan on owning this another 20 or 30 years.

  • Subaru Outback: brake wear normal??

I have a 2002 Subaru Outback and just noticed one of the front brakes was grinding. Upon closer inspection, one of the pads was worn down and started grooving the rotor. When I replaced the pads (and the rotor) I found that only the inboard pads were both worn down to nothing, but the outboard pads were like new. I have less than 40,000 miles on the car, more than half of that are on the highway. Isn't this fast for this much wear? Why only one pad worn so much?

I have an old chest-type freezer (circa 1975) that I would replace if I knew for certian that it was inefficient. It is fairly small and in good condition. Is there a way to determine the efficiency? I have a variety of electricians tools and meters that I could use.

  • Tarnish On Silver Coins?

I have purchased a number of new mint silver coins over the past few years - silver eagles and Canadian maple leafs - and today I noticed that a few have started to tarnish, turning black in places, even though they appear to be sealed in their original mint plastic envelopes. What causes this? Does it effect the value? should I do anything about it? What is the best way to store these coins? They are currently in a safe - dry and dark.

  • Can a company own ALL of its own stock?

I've often heard of a corporation purchasing some of its own stock back because they thought that was a good value or price at the time. Can a company theoretically buy ALL of its own stock back? If so, who would own the company, would it be a non-profit organization or a co-op of some sort? Consider if the company basically had little value, such as when assets equals debt.

  • Best FM Radio for distant stations?

I live in a remote mountain location and thought that I couldn't pick up my favorite FM stations. While driving a Ford Ranger with the standard FM radio, I was surprised that I can pick them up pretty well, but only with the radio in the vehicle. Who makes a portable (or componant stereo type) radio with equal qualities for reception? I'm willing to spend $150 or so if it works. I'm guessing that the external antenna has a lot to do with it, so the capability of connecting to an antenna would be great.

  • Do I really need paper under tongue-and-groove flooring?

I have found several methods for the installation of T&G flooring over plywood subfloor. Some say that building paper should be installed below the T&G floor, some say tar paper and some don't mention any paper at all. The floor is over a conditioned (heated) space below. Any ideas and why?
