My soon to be inlaws have been cyber-stalking me for a while now, how do I show them how creepy this is?
Apparently my fiance's parents run searches on permutations of my name and screen name very frequently. My fiancee suspects it may even be every day. About two months ago they went through my social networking profiles and pointed out to him the (really public knowledge) dirt they found. This included such shocking revelations as my heterosexuality and the fact that I have a tattoo on my back. He was unsurprised by either of these revelations.
I thought that was the end of it but he told me today that his parents call him maybe a couple times a week and read every new post and every comment of mine they find out loud to him and act as if it's proof he should never speak to me again. No matter how innocuous the material, he never hears the end of it. He asked me to please stop saying things online so they'd leave him be, but I don't like giving in to bullies.
How do I get them to understand they're not winning any friends (or helping their case at all) by doing this?
13 AnswersWeddings1 decade agoHow do I find a clergyman who has vestments and will wear them for our NoVa wedding?
We're having a historical theme wedding in Fairfax County, VA and having an officiant in a modern business suit would be jarring. Also, I'm not even gonna bother trying to find someone who already has the right historical costume.
The idea is vestments change much more slowly than regular clothing styles. In that way, wearing the modern version is also being dressed in a historical costume.
2 AnswersWeddings1 decade agoWhere in upstate New York should I try to get B&B reservations for my honeymoon/fall foliage trip?
We can stay anywhere with a focus on cozy, comfortably rustic B&B accommodations with easy access to fall color scenery. It doesn't even have to be in upstate NY, it's just the closest area we know we can find what we want with the shortest drive from DC. Anything at least that close and at least that suitable for my purposes would also be appropriate- even if it isn't actually in Upstate NY.
I get that it's a big area with a jillion different options. Also, I can google hotel reservation website listings myself, thanks. Please respond with either a region you think I should check out or the name of a B&B you can recommend personally for a young couple's peaceful rural honeymoon.
3 AnswersOther - United States1 decade agoWas there some real life event where a VW van was found with a decades old skeleton inside?
Futurama, Bones, Law & Order, and Lost, among others, featured nearly identical plots involving someone dredging and finding a van with a single skeleton inside. That usually means it's one of law and order's "ripped from the headlines" plots, when you've seen the same story or one with the same distinctive specific set of details on other detective shows.
If it's not a real thing, it's probably a reference to something in art, music, film or literature. At the very least I'd like to find the first sighting of this trope.
1 AnswerOther - Television1 decade agoWas there some real life event where a VW van was found with a decades old skeleton inside?
A nearly identical thing happened on 6 different TV shows I can think of off the top of my head, and I'm assuming it's a reference to something that happened. I've tried looking at the Wikipedia episode pages to see references or allusions people have listed but nowhere was the relevant part of the episode brought up. If not a reference to some real life event, it could also be something like album cover art or song lyrics, or a particular book/movie.
4 AnswersOther - News & Events1 decade agoIn Sims 3, some specific types of custom content don't show up in CAS or show up and do nothing.?
This is so oddly specific it has to be something other than a fluke. Most of my custom content works fine, but for some reason the ones I got from the EA store haven't worked since I had to uninstall and reinstall the game and redownload and install custom content. They did work before.
But besides that, earrings, makeup, and things like an accessory that is supposed to look like long nails or a bellybutton ring just won't work. Some custom shoes show up and some don't. Besides the content that doesn't show up as an option at all in CAS, some does show up but does nothing when selected.
Is there a patch? Is this a MacBook thing?
Just to be clear, I have my directories set up fine. I must since the clothes and non-EA hair work fine.
3 AnswersVideo & Online Games1 decade agoWhat in California law stops an employer from taking back a discretionary bonus already paid to an employee?
Our salesmen often are offered incentive "spiffs" in the form of "sell more than $1000 in biologics this week and get a $50 bonus. Returns received in the week and sales made in the week are counted together and this net figure is what the bonuses are determined on. My boss wants to make it known that if you sold a net of $1150, but then $200 of those products was returned weeks or even months later, that we'd go back and make you pay us $50.
This is illegal, I'm quite sure of it, but I need somewhere this is spelled out explicitly in black and white. The Labor Code section 221 seems to apply, but I was hoping there might be more or something that specifically references discretionary bonuses so my boss doesn't say "oh but these bonuses aren't part of wages so it doesn't apply.".
1 AnswerLaw & Legal1 decade agoMy copy of Sims 3 loads way more slowly than it should. What else can I do, other than the things I mention?
I have a Macbook Pro I bought less than 1 month before the Sims 3 came out and there's really nothing else on it. I never can do much of anything other than leave it sitting there while my game loads or saves or whatever.
I've got the graphics all on lowest quality and lowest refresh rate etc... and I tried making small families and putting them on small lots, but it still takes 3+ hours to load and longer to open a saved game. I clicked save and quit, and it took 6 hours to finally do so.
I use the task manager to make sure nothing else is running, and just leave it be. This is with no mods or custom content. And even though this comp was brand new, and my old computer was 3 years out of date when I was using that one to play Sims 2, that only took maybe 15 min to a half an hour to start.
Specs: 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
250GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
What's causing this? What can I do? I turned down the graphics, my game is up to date, I have absolutely nothing else on there, I'm not doing anything else at the same time, and it seems unbelieveable to me that this is really the best it can be.
2 AnswersVideo & Online Games1 decade agoWhat do you think of my sonnet?
Periphery, I stand aside unseen
Just painted on the backdrop deaf and dumb
Human prop as background to a scene
Hovering round to wait for what might come
I’m white noise built in see-through flesh and bone
So constant as to hide within full view
So close I’m standing center stage alone
When all I want is just one kiss from you
It’s not that you can’t see me, not at all
The opposite in fact is more the case
You hear my voice in drone, so long I call
Ignore adoring, constant on my face
The guardian angel you can never know
Could draw attention only if I go.
3 AnswersPoetry1 decade agoIs it legal in CA to make a policy that says workers can only take their break in the office or parking lot?
I'm not quite sure it's legal, so I want to see if any of you know the laws before I make the announcement. We're not supposed to leave the office, or possibly the parking lot in front of the office, on our breaks. I thought your boss couldn't tell you where you could or could not go when you were not on the clock. It doesn't matter to me either way, I just need an answer.
3 AnswersSmall Business1 decade agoWhy is -3636 so popular as the last 4 digits of a US phone number?
I've been doing data entry on 200+ orders dentists placed with our company, and I noticed approximately 1 in 10 of the orders have a phone number ending -3636. These are all over the country, some are cells and some are business lines, and presumably a couple are residences, but a huge percent of them end with the same 4 digits. Do dentists just really like numbers ending -3636, do -3636 make up a disproportionately high percentage of the potential number pool for some reason, or do I just have a coincidentally extremely skewed sample?
3 AnswersMathematics1 decade agoAn employee is missing a lot of work to care for a sick relative. How do I tell her she needs to do her job?
I feel bad for this woman assuming her story is true but before it was the injured aunt it was checking a family member into rehab and before that it was checking a different family member into the hospital. I understand the occasional family emergency, but this woman makes a habit of it. I need to talk to her, because she's missing a ton of work (with doctor's notes) and when she's here she isn't focused on working. She's gotten away with this for a long time. How do I tell her she can't keep doing this when each individual thing is so reasonable and a manager (not her manager though) keeps telling her it's ok because "family comes first"? I'm worried about making the company look really bad, but she is a salaried employee and so we're still having to pay her to get here 4 hours late or leave 2 hours early.
6 AnswersSmall Business1 decade agoIn Excel, how do I remove everything in column A that also appears in column B?
If column A is "e-mail addresses we have for customers" and column B is "e-mail addresses we know are bad." How do I filter for items that are ONLY in list A so that we end up with a list of only good e-mail addresses?
2 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoIs hourly pay for min. wage calculated with base salary plus commission averaged out over hours worked?
I'm in California if it matters. I've always been told that the salary plus the commission was used to calculate a true hourly wage, and that that number was what we should use to determine if we were obeying minimum wage law or not.
One of our salesmen had a terrible month in which he sold maybe 10% of what our salesmen usually sell in a month, so his commission check is tiny. He will make less than minimum wage, but it's not our fault.
First, am I right that commissions do count towards minimum wage law compliance in California? Second, what do we do when someone just don't sell and therefore will make under minimum wage? I really want us to be in compliance with all laws, and besides that this particular employee seems like the kind of person who would take us to the labor board at the drop of a hat.
1 AnswerOther - Business & Finance1 decade agoIn California, do paychecks have to be made available before payday if the payday is on a weekend?
I am doing payroll at a small office, and our paydays are the 1st and 15th. At every other company I've ever done payroll at the checks were written for payday, and you could pick them up on the first business day following payday. There's a woman here who keeps telling me that it's illegal to give her her check on Monday the 2nd because it's after payday and therefore she should be paid on Friday the 27th. I can't find any law that's square on point. Does California law ever require regular paychecks to be made available before the designated payday?
4 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoWhat is the Excel function to compare prices between two vendors' price lists, pick the lowest nonzero value?
I have two price lists right next to each other on the same spreadsheet and I need to create a function that tells me whether "current vendor" or "new vendor" has the best price on each individual item. The problem I'm encountering is that the new vendor only has some of the items available so my IF function is reading that as a 0 and picking the new vendor as having the lowest price on all the items they don't carry. How should I phrase my formula if I want it to return the lower price, but only if its value is greater than 0?
2 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoMy civil summons is undated and was given to a roommate who wasn't asked to sign for it?
The date the paperwork was generated was some two weeks before someone at my house got it, but I have no proof of that because nobody was asked to sign it and it wasn't dated when I was served. They said I had 30 days to respond from the date I was served, but I don't know if that's right because there's no record of me being served at all. I'm in California, USA, as I've heard the laws vary state-by-state.
2 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoBollywood movie about a mousy character who enters the Miss India or similar pageant, marries millionaire.?
I was trying to remember the name of a Bollywood movie I saw, but I have no recollection of it. The main character is a mousy girl who enters a pageant and ends up having a super young millionaire fall for her. In this movie, her father is an accountant or tax man or something, and there's a crime boss out to mess things up. This crime boss is very annoyed because every time he introduces himself, people aren't afraid because they've never heard of him.
2 AnswersMovies1 decade agoWhat happens when US Citizen parents refuse to list their SSNs on a child's birth certificate?
Clearly people without social security numbers can give birth here, because immigrants do it all the time. But I know what happens to them; the parents get deported and the child is a citizen and can stay here or go back with their parents.
This is NOT what I'm asking about. What will happen if two US citizens decline to state their ID numbers? Will the family be prevented from leaving the hospital, or the parents arrested, or the child taken away, or anything?
