Not much to say. I'm a college student, currently taking a semester off for health reasons. I'm a poet, currently unpublished (though I'm working on it...editors are a slow bunch). I'm happy. I'm sad. I'm everything in between and then some, and there's no telling when the some will become more or less. Life's funny like that.

  • Prison isolation - cruel and unusual punishment?

I'm just wondering if putting immates "in the hole", as it used to be termed, ie in isolation for being especially hostile, repeatedly breaking prison rules, etc, was considered cruel and unusual punishment. I seem to recall reading about a case in the '70s where it was determined (in Arkansas, I believe it was) that any period longer than 30 days constituted C&U, but I haven't been able to find any info besides that.

  • Looking for a low-light, low water, low maint plant that won't die on me :)?

I feel bad. Over the years, I've sort of become a genocidal maniac when it comes to houseplants. It's not on purpose, to be sure...I'm just very absent-minded and forget to water them fairly consistently. On top of that, I live in Fargo, ND, and its' relatively dark a good deal of teh time, so the plants I would need would be able to subsist in an apartment wiht the blinds constantly drawn. I'm hoping there's something a little more extravagant than a cactii, tho I'm aware they need lots of sunlight...you know what I mean, tho. I dig leafy plants, but I get the impression they don't do well in this type of environment. I'd like to get a few, as well, in hopes they'd help clean up teh smokey environment, at least a little. It's happened in teh past, so I see no reason why it wouldn't now. I suppose I could open by blinds some, on sunny days, to let a little light in, but again, the absent minded thing comes into play.

Any varieties suited to my dark, dank environment would be appreciated :)

  • IE 7.0 Connection issues - keeps going to white screen for no reason?

Before I describe what's going on, let me let you know that not 3 months ago, I had a brand new modem, along with brand new wiring, straight from the tower to my apt, installed by the cable co., so I highly doubt the problem I'm having is due to that.

So, with that said, here's what happening:

Every so often, say, 2 out of 5 times I connect to a site (the site itself doesn't matter...there's no one single one that causes the problem), I'll get the warning box pop up that says "Internet Explorer Cannot Connect to the Website Below"...and then it has the url to the site, and below that, the OK button. I hit ok, and the majority of the time, it goes to the white Internet Explorer Cannot Display the Page page (tho, there are a few times it doesn't do that and just stays on the page I'd intended to do to....god knows why). I hit the Back button, and it goes to the page I'd originally intended to go to just fine, usually without any delay at all.

As I said, it's a brand new modem, wiring, and there's no one particular site that's causing it. I've done virus and ad-ware scans, cleaned out unneeded files, defrag'ed and registry cleaned, and still, it keeps doing it often enough to be annoying.

I'm wondering if a fresh reinstall of IE would help, but then again, I'm wondering what could be causing it to begin with.

If anyone has any thoughts, I'd appreciate it.

  • Cutting me off...?

Ok, here's the situation that I'm in. I had an appt yesterday morning w/my pain management dr. Sadly, I accidentall overslept a bti and so I showed up an hour late. Because of that, the dr refused to see me, even for 3 minutes, and he also refused to write a refill for the prescription that I've been getting regular amounts of for abou a year. He said the best he could do was I had to make a new appt, which I did. I asked merely for a prescription with just enough to tide me over until that appt, and still he refused. The medication I'm referring to is oxycodone, and my body is pretty much addicted. So, since he just all of a sudden decides to cut me off, there's a good chance I'll end up in the hospital. I went without the medication for a couple days before, and I got fever, chills, was throwing up non-stop, and was pretty much bed ridden.

Now, a friend told me that if drs prescribe a drug regularly, it's illegal for them to just stop all of a sudden like that. Is that true?

  • Paxil and Trazodone - are they used for pain relief?

I have Crohn's disease. It's pretty close to being as bad as it can get, and I've had 7 surgeries over the past year and a half. I still have almost constant problems with fistulas, infections, etc. etc. So, as a result of all that, I've been in, and continue to be in a good deal of pain. I've run the gamut through pain meds, and now, I find that, due to the tolerance I've developed, a somewhat large dose of oxycodone works fairly well (45mg/4x a day).

I went to a pain management clinic today and met with a new Dr, and he got on my case about taking the amount that I do. He wants me to begin cutting back and prescribed Paxil and Trazodone to replace the oxycodone. I told him I thought those were anti-depressants, and he disagreed, saying they were used for pain management. Now, nothing I've read says anything like that, so I'm wondering if he's just stringing me along because he doesn't like handing out narcotics. Some pain Dr he is.

    Anyone have any thoughts?

  • How economical is it to produce ethanol?

It's been a while since I've researched this, but last I heard, the answer was still up for debate. So, if anyone knows if a definitive answer has been found, I'd appreciate it.

The problem is with ethanol. Besides all the obvious arguments about it contributing to food shortages and that type of thing, a lot of people in the know claim that it takes more gasoline and other outside energy to produce ethanol than if we were to just use the gasoline and other energies as we normally do.

    Does that make sense?

So, say, it takes 2 gallons of gasoline to produce 1 gallon of ethanol (I've no idea if that's correct....just numbers for sake of argument), and ethanol is 1/3 less efficient in autos than gasoline, wouldn't it just make more sense to put the original gasoline in the damn car to begin with? Granted, ethanol is way better as far as emisions and such, but we're still burning the gasoline to make it. So, what's the point?

  • Antisocial person getting a roommate?

Ok, here's the deal. I go in cycles with roommates. At first, everything is hunky dory. We get along famously. Then, my antisocial, mild OCD cycle kicks in, and I begin to get incredibly annoyed at the slightest things they do. I'm very anal-retentive and have a very particular way of doing things (one of the main things I love about living alone is knowing that everything will be exactly as I left it, if I go out). The creamer goes in the bottom shelf in the door of the fridge, the shower curtain needs to be pushed to the left side, not the right, don't eat my half of something if you finish your half....random, mundane things like that. And of course, other people don't place nearly as much importance on things like that as I do, so I tend to get filled with resentment and get to the point where I just want to say f*ck you and live alone again.

I'd feel like a dick micromanaging someone like that, but really, it's the only way I can think of to avoid being miserable.

  • Home loan programs for students with bad credit?

I'm a 27-year-old college student who's considering buying a house for the first time, and I was wondering if there are any mortgage programs specifically geared towards students. I'm also on Social Security Disability, and my credit is positively terrible (hospital bills turned over to collection agencies are the culprit...). I make a limited amount of money each month, so my mortgage payment would have to be pretty low.

So, does anyone know of any programs that I might qualify for?

  • Ford Contour speaker size?

I want to replace the speakers in my '95 Contour, but can't find out what size the speakers are. I've looked at a bunch of websites, but no luck.

If anyone knows offhand, or can direct me to where I can find out, it would be much appreciated!

  • Gas and bloating after intestinal surgery?

I had a couple procedures done a couple weeks ago (sigmoid colectomy, and reversal illeostomy) on my abdominal region, and now, a couple weeks later, my intestines continue to gurgle and rumble and build up gas like nobodies business. It gets to the point that my stomach gets distended, and the pain from it spreads to my back. I know that excess gas is a side-effect of intestinal surgery, but I was wondering how much longer should I expect this to go on? I'm eating sort of regularly, though not nearly close to normal, and I've pretty frequently been nauseas lately.

Anyone have any tips on when things might start to get back to normal? I'd appreciate it greatly.

  • Does Oxycontin hurt your teeth?

I had surgery a couple months ago and have been on Oxycontin fairly steadily since then. It works nicely to cut the pain, but I'm noticing that my teeth are starting to hurt whenever I take them. I've heard that they can cause tooth decay but haven't been able to find anything about that online.

If anyone knows anything, it'd be mucho appreciated.

  • Favre or Grossman?

K, I'm back looking for more fantasy advise.

I have the chance to trade Grossman for Favre, who somehow ended up in free agency (I also have Palmer, who's my regular starter, so whichever of the two I get would be the backup).

So, who's the better backup, ya think? I can't help but think that, maybe, the Packers are finally starting to gell a little, and Favre, this being, probably, his last year and all, is getting pissed and doesn't want to go out on a year like last one.

Then again, Grossman shows some promise behind the Bears O line.

    Hmm. Another conundrum.

  • Grossman vs. Vikings or Palmer vs. Steelers?

So, I have Rex Grossman and Carson Palmer on my Fantasy team, and I can't decide who to start this weekend. Grossman is going to be facing the Vikings, and Palmer has the Steelers. While Palmer is the better quarterback of the two, I'm wondering how well he'll do against the Steel Curtain, and if Grossman will fare better against the Vikings.

What a conundrum. If you were in my shoes, who would you start?

  • Honest, non-judgmental question for Christians regarding creation?

I'll begin with the commonly accepted beliefs about god and the creation of man with my question. This is something that I've never been able to reconcile, and I'm curious what sort of answers I'll get. I'm not a Christian, though I do have an extensive background in the area.

Ok, so Christian doctine teachs that god is all-knowing and all-powerful. He knows all that is, all that has been, and all that is to be. He has no beginning and no end. Now, with those things in mind, we come to the creation of man. It stands to reason that god knew what would happen after man's creation. He knew that man would sin, and he knew that centuries of suffering would follow, and he also knows that, eventually, he'll cast billions of his creations into eternal hellfire.

My question is this: why would god, knowing all the above, create man, knowing it would cause untold pain? Certainly, a select few will meet the standards, but are those few worth the suffering of the countless billions?

  • MySpace hyperlinks?

I write in my MySpace blog a lot, and I insert hyperlinks fairly often. I want to change the settings so that they open in new windows instead of redirecting the main page, but I can't find anyway to change it. The pull-down menu has the following options: _self (the default option), _blank, _parent, and _top. I've tried all of them and haven't noticed any difference in anything, so if anyone can shed any light on it, I'd appreciate it.

  • Lung cancer recovery?

I was just wondering if anyone knows how often people actually recover from lung cancer. I know it varies, depending on the stage, but if someone could give some sort of average, or even break it down per stage, that would be awesome. I'm curious because whenever you hear about someone getting lung cancer, it's always like, boom, they're dead within a short time.

  • How do I calculate the square footage of my apartment?

I'm curious as to just how many square feet my small apartment has, but I'm not sure how to go about it. It's basically one long rectangle, so should I just measure the length and width, multiply them, and disregard the walls and whatnot? Or should I figure out each individual room and then add them all together? I'm not sure what the standard method is.

    Thanks! :)

  • Filling, quick breakfast recipes besides the same old thing?

I'm a college student (well, on summer break, but still). My mornings are usually pretty busy, and I generally don't have time to make a big breakfast (ie: eggs, bacon, pancakes). Besides, I get tired of eating the same breakfast foods every morning. Don't get me wrong...I love eggs and bacon. It's just a pain to make all that on a school morning, and I usually tend to get hungry not long after. So, I usually end up running through McDonalds drive-thru. I'm unbelievably sick of that, as well.

So, what I'm wondering is if anyone has any relatively healthy, quick and filling recipes for breakfast besides the same-ole-same-ole. No oatmeal or scrambled-egg sandwiches, please. Gimme some p'zaz to start the day off (and make it snappy, plz, mmmk, thks) *grin*

  • NIN -- And All That Could Have Been Easter Eggs?

On the AATCHB DVD by Nine Inch Nails, there are several easter eggs, including one main menu containing them all, called Beneath the Surface. I know how to reach it on a regular DVD player (hit 7, then Enter at 11:20ish during Head Like a Hole), but I can't manage to figure out how to do it when playing the disc on my computer. I've done it before, so it *is* possible, but what I did before isn't working now. I've tried exploring the disc, but that produced no results, and I've tried messing with the chapters in WMP, also to no avail.

If anyone has any tips that could help, I'd appreciate it!
