help with calculation!?
This questoon relates to dog food which i have also posted in the pets section.
Basically my dog has to be on a low fat diet which is considered 10% fat or less. The prescription food is listed as 7.4% fat 3360kcal/kg. I dont like the ingredients in this food so i found another i would like to feed. That lists fat content as 8% per 100g (347kcal/100g). Does this mean the prescription food is 7.4% fat per 336kcal/100g??? I am so bad at maths. Basically, i am trying to find out the fat content of the prescription diet per 100g to see if its similar to the other food but i dont know if converting the kg to g affects the fat content %?
Thanks
1 AnswerMathematics8 years agoHelp with a suitable diet pancreatitis?
My dog had suspected pancreatitis and i want to feed him a low fat food to try and prevent the problem reoccuring.
I want to feed kibble. I have looked at lilys kitchen very venison which has 8% fat per 100g (347kcal/100g). All of the articles i have read say to feed a diet of less than 10% fat but i dont know if thats per 100g or in the whole serving? Lilys kitchen says he will need around 180g/day.
All of the other foods i have looked at dont state what portion size their nutritional info is based on and surely the values given cant be for the whole bag when they are roughly the same as lilys kitchen but that is only for 100g. The only one that stated it was the hills id diet which is probably what the vet will put him on but i dont like the look of the ingredients in it. The hills diet says 7.4% fat 3360kcal/kg. I am so confused. Does this mean the hills diet has 7.4% fat 336/kcal/100g or have i got that totally wrong? I dont know if converting the g to kg affects anything? I just wanted to know how much fat is in a 100g of the hills prescription food to see its its similar to the lilys kitchen food as i would much eather feed that. Thanks!

1 AnswerReality Television9 years agoWould a reputable breeder consider selling you their ex-breeding bitches/dogs?
I am interested in purchasing a french bulldog. I already have a pug (dog) and I have been researching Frenchies and I think that one would fit quite nicely into our family. Like my pug, the breed seems to fit my lifestyle very well and I am seriously considering buying.
I thoroughly understand the need to purchase from a reputable breeder but my question is whether or not a reputable breeder would consider selling me one of their older, ex-breeding bitches/dog. I would prefer a ***** and would be prepared to pay for spaying before taking the dog while they were still under the care of the breeder. I am not interested in breeding or showing, I just want to ensure that I have a happy, healthy dog.
I have found 2 reputable breeders that I am wanting to contact but firstly wanted other reputable breeders opinions to see if this is something you have ever done/considered? I am wanting an older dog as I would prefer not to have to go through the 'puppy stage'. I am fully aware of the need for continious training no matter what the dogs age but feel that a sligtly more mature dog would be a better fit for myself and my partner.
13 AnswersDogs10 years agoSwelling on dogs face?
I have a pug who is 3 years old. Yesterday I noticed a slight swelling on the wrinkle on his face over his nose so I boiled some water, let it cool and then bathed the wrinkle. Today, particularly this evening it has became worse and he has several spots that appear to be leaking a watery bloody looking liquid. I have made an appointment for first thing in the morning for the vet but just wandered if anyone had any idea as to what they might be and if there is anything I can do in the meantime to make him more comfortable as they appear to be itching.
I clean my dogs face on a daily basis and always thoroughly dry it so I know that the problem has not been caused by it being dirty or being left damp.
1 AnswerDogs1 decade agonew guinea pigs...do's and dont's?
to cut a long story short...i intended on getting two guinea pigs as pets for my little sister. i was hoping to get them in a few weeks time when i had time to research them properly but i went into my local shop a last week and overheard two young boys with their dogs (used for chasing and catching rabbits) talking about and advert displayed on the notice board for two free guinea pigs and how "much of laugh that would be to get them and let the dogs play with them". i wont repeat what i said to those idiotic boys on here but i ended up calling the number and said i would come and collect them straight away to save them from being taken by those cruel thugs.
i have bought several books n did a little research online but just wondered if any experienced owners had any handy tips or advice to pass on? i have never owned a guinea pig before and think i have the basics covered. they are a little over a year old and are not used to being handled which we are working on, just wanted tips with treats/safe foods etc?

4 AnswersDogs1 decade agoyour proud "parent" moments?
after months and months of recall training and teaching my dog to ignore other dogs we encounter on walks, yesterday was the first time I realised my dog had got it and training had finally sunk in! he was exceptionally well behaved, came back everytime he was called regardless of distractions and completely ignored any dogs around him.
I was so happy and spent much of our walk grinning like a cheshire cat I was so proud of him especially when some lady commented on his behaviour and asked why her dog wasn't as calm and well trained as mine. I was extremely proud of him and he was rewarded with lots of praise, belly rubs and cuddles.

8 AnswersDogs1 decade agoThe downsides to dog ownership?
I love my dog. He is a little bundle of energy (surprisingly for a pug) who makes me smile everyday and provides me with unfaltering loyalty and companionship. I cannot imagine my life without him in it and I dread the day he leaves me.
But sometimes he drives me insane. Anyone who denies, at times, that their dog pushes their patience to the limits is in my opinion a liar. He barks at the most inappropriate times (particularly in the middle of a movie which requires your attention), he is greedy (my own fault for feeding him leftovers as a pup), he snores LOUDLY, he sheds like crazy, he always poops when people are looking at us/trying to pet him, he point blank refuses to have his nails clipped/teeth cleaned, he steals my socks, he ruins all the new plants and flowers in the garden and he insists on getting as close to you as he can possibly get (resulting in me tripping over him alot). Despite all of that, he is my dog and I adore him. One little look from those big brown eyes and all bad points are forgotten.
What are your personal experiences of the downside to owning a dog/s? And people who say 'there are no downsides, as my dog is so well trained' blah blah may as well not answer because you must be fibbing! NO dog is perfect, no matter how obedient.
23 AnswersDogs1 decade agoWhat has the dog section been up to today/tonight?
Just got back in from an evening walk with my dog which ended up turning more into a hike than anything else (it is 8.15pm here in England)
We got a bit lost in some fields and ended up taking a 5 mile de-tour in the wrong direction and had to fight our way through an incredibly thawny bush to escape a corn field that seemed never ending! We are both exhausted now, but it was great fun!
My boy seen his first pony this evening and he didn't quite know what to make of it. The pony let him have a good sniff but he still seemed a little unsure of it but he did enjoy sharing the carrots!
What have/do you plan to do today with your dog/s? Anyone have anything special going on today?

11 AnswersDogs1 decade agoDS: Help with a stubborn dog and a barking issue?
My dog is a 2 year old pug who is as stubborn as a mule and has began to develop an annoying barking problem.
My dog has began to start barking at animals on tv, police/ambulance sirens, knocks at the door, people talking loudly as they pass the house late at night and generally any little noise that is unexpected. It is driving me insane.
I try and better try to correct him, but I don't seem to be having much luck with it. He is extremely stubborn and often requires quite harsh corrections. I am willing to use a bark collar AS A LAST RESORT! I just wondered if anyone could give me any tips to try first, as I want to avoid using the collar if I can.
At the moment he is corrected using a half check chain. I do not want to use a prong, not because I am against them, but I am scared of using it incorrectly and causing my dog unnecessary harm.
1 AnswerDogs1 decade agoRaw Feeders: Any help would be apprechiated!?
My dog has had his allergy results back and he is allergic to storage mites, commonly found in dried dog food (kibble).
My vet has advised me to stop feeding him kibble (I was feeding Burns) and to consider a raw diet or tinned wet food (which I don't really want to feed).
I am now at the point of researching a raw diet to start feeding my dog, but I am kind of stuck. Most of the information I am reading is aimed at larger dogs and being able to feed things such as chicken quarters etc. My dog is a 20 pound pug. I realise that I could give smaller portions of things, but I would like to be able to feed him convenient things (such as chicken quarters) as someone else takes care of him while I work and its unfair to have them messing about weighing food etc.
What kind of things can you feed a smaller dog?
What kind of foods will I need to be feeding to keep the balance in his diet right?
Are there any foods I should avoid?
What is considered to be a balance? Is it a balance of organs as well as RMB's?
Any help, info and advice would be greatly appreciated as I literally have no idea where to begin.

17 AnswersDogs1 decade agoDS: Help with allergies?
My dogs allergy test results have finally came back!
He has tested as having 3 positive allergens:
One allergen is dust mites
the other 2 are a variety of storage mites, one of which was apparently extremely reactive during testing.
I have had a look on the internet for information. I can find a lot of info on dust mites as it is apparently a common canine allergen. However, I am not having too much luck with the storage mite (or 'food storage mites') as apparently not much is known about them. And yes I can use google before people start telling me to look on there!
My vet has said they are found within dry dog foods, cereals, cheeses etc which is pretty much all I can find on the internet.
My vet has began the process of creating a 'desensitizer' set of vaccinations which we will begin in around a month time and has advised me to stop feeding kibble.
I have a few questions, sorry!
- can anyone give me useful advice/website for beginners at raw feeding?
- does anyone have any first hand experience with a dog with similar/same allergies?
- has anyone had experience with vaccinating a dog against allergies, if so, did it work/help in the slightest?

1 AnswerDogs1 decade agoDS: What has your dog done lately that made you laugh/smile?
I don't usually dress my dog up (he has a dog coat) but that's usually my limit (apart from halloween when he sometimes wears a t-shirt).
Well today I came home from work and walked in on my poor boy sat there in a dress with little dolls shoes on, at my 2 year old sister's 'dolly tea party'. If it had been anyone else who had dressed him up I probably wouldn't of been happy, but she doesn't know any better and she thinks he likes to play with her and her dolls! aww bless!
I only wish I could of grabbed the camera before he moved. He looked hilarious sat in a pink flowered dress and little pink booties with a cup and saucer in front of him at the table! Haha, I think he was kind of mad I interrupted.

8 AnswersDogs1 decade agoDS: Do you think the designer dog phase will ever end?
Now I know 'designer dogs' have been around for years and years and years....except when I was younger they were simply referred to as a mongrel, mutt, mix etc. and never purposely bred.
From what *I* can remember, when two different breeds were mixed, it was often the result of an 'accident' so to speak...it tended to be the result of irresponsible owners allowing their dogs to roam the streets, or some prat who just 'wanted to make cute puppies!'. There were some exceptions of people who worked their dogs mixing them, but where I live this situation was vary rare. Mixed breed pups were often the result of the first circumstance I mentioned.
It has only been over the last couple of years that this 'designer dog' phase seems to have boomed. Well, that's my opinion anyway, you may have had different experiences. What I am really trying to ask is, do you think that this pathetic phase will ever lose its shine? Many dogs are suffering at the hands of BYB's to stock the ridiculous demand and genetic messes are being produced and sold all over the shop. Do you ever think that the need for 'puggles' and 'labradoodles' etc will ever go away and mix bred dogs will just go back to being plain old mutts?
Its really sad to see; I am not saying that there is anything wrong with mutts, I am considering adopting one from my local shelter who I have completely fallen in love with (he is a GSD x Chow) but I think if people truely understood that these dogs are just a mutt through and through, with a fancy name tag slapped on, then it might make them think twice.
It is the sheer ignorance of some people. A lady at my vet yesterday was sat cuddling her 'peekapom' and she was sat there telling me all about his fantastic breeding 'lines' and he has got so many champions on one side, and so many on the other...*rolls eyes*. I couldn't help but tell her what she had paid stupid amounts of money for was a simple mutt. Cute, yes. Anything special, no. I also reminded her that people who spend thousands of pounds and the time and effort of showing their dogs to prove them for breeding would not just slap their dog together with another one (especially of a different breed) so the likely hood of having any champions in her dogs breeding was slim to none. Needless to say she wasn't impressed.
But the saddest thing is, I truely believe that if she knew what her dog was before she bought him, she probably wouldn't have ever taken the pup home. *Some* people only want them because they think they are some kind of status symbol and if you dare try and point out that they are nothing but a mutt, the dog all of a sudden loses its appeal. Some people even get offended at the fact you called their dog a mutt, like its something to be ashamed of?
Sorry for the length of the question!!
9 AnswersDogs1 decade agoDS: You and your heart dogs?
I was just answering another question about why I chose my breed, and it got me thinking about special dogs that people have in their lives.
I have a pug and I was going through a kind of bad relationship when I got him; I truly believed that he saved me. If it wasn't for him, my now ex-boyfriend wouldn't have been exposed as the immature, selfish, arrogant, workshy idiot that he turned out to be, and I would still be living a horrible, lonely life where my ex constantly humiliated my behind my back with other girls.
As cheesy as it sounds, I really do believe that me and my pug (Rufus) were made for each other. He is just what I was looking for at the time and is now something so precious to me that I wonder how I coped for the 21 years before I owned him! I see myself in him and it is comforting. He has my annoying habits and we share a stubborn, yet playful personality. Some people say he is 'just a dog' and while I understand that yes, he is an animal, he is also something so much more to me.
Do you currently own, or have ever owned a dog that you shared this kind of relationship with? Have you ever owned a dog you believe was destined to be with you to teach you something?
Feel free to share stories and pictures!

12 AnswersDogs1 decade agoDS: Any Decent Breed Specific Forums?
Hi everyone,
I have been searching all over the internet for a decent forum for me to visit, but so far not having much luck!
Are there any forums you could recommend that you frequent? I am particularly interested in looking for a Pug forum, as that is my breed of choice.
Any suggestions would be welcome, breed specific or not!

4 AnswersDogs1 decade agoAnyone go to Crufts yesterday?
I have just got back from my trip to Crufts and I have loved it!
It was my first time at a dog show and I thought it was fantastic. I was there yesterday for Toy & Utility day and I am a little upset that I couldn't stay again today to watch the best in show judging :(
Was anyone else there yesterday? If so, what did you think of it? Anything in particular you enjoyed?
Were you pleased with the results of the group judging? I was hoping that the pug (my breed) would do well, but the dog that won best of beed was absolutely gorgeous!
It was really good to get to speak to breeders and meet all of the different breeds (many of which I have never seen before) and get to interact with the dogs. I think my favourite overall activity was the heelwork to music and the lady that won yesterday was excellent.
Is anyone lucky enough to be going today?
I can't wait for next year!
6 AnswersDogs1 decade agoDog Bites: Always owner at fault?
If a *stable* dog randomly bites/attacks, do you think that it is always the owner who is at fault?
I am trying to remain unbiased in this question, as I want to see what other people think.d
However, in general, I think that the owner isn't always the one to blame. When people on here ask questions like this, the majority of people always blame the owner and say it is due to poor socialization and training, or the dog had an unstable temprement. Whilst I agree that these factors can affect how the dog behaves, I do not believe that well socialized and well trained dogs are totally trustworthy; at the end of the day a dog is just an animal and animals can be unpredictable.
As for the unstable temprement, how can you always spot an unstable temprement until the dog attacks? You hear of family pets who have been great companions for years and then all of a sudden turn on their owners. The dog would have thought to have had a stable temprement as they had previously been well behaved, then out of the blue they lash out.
When talking about the dog attacking/biting, I don't mean when they are provoked. Provoking a dog is you just asking to be bitten, I am talking about when for no apparent reason a dog will take it upon itself to do someone serious damage. This question is really coming from an article I read in a magazine the other day where the family dog, who was 5 years old and had shown no previous sign of aggression, broke out of one room, ran down stairs, jumped the baby gate on the stairs and ran into the lounge attacking the owners 4 year old granddaughter. Totally unprovoked, totally unexpected. The dog was well socialized with the child and had never before gave the owners reason to believe the dog didn't like the child. Before the attack, the dog had played with the child allowing her to climb over him, touch his toys etc many, many times. The child was quietly playing in the corner, hardly making a sound when the dog jumped on her.
I believe that training is likely to reduce the risk of incidents like this happening, but it can't fully prevent them. I think, to some degree, a dog will lash out if it wants to. Take yourself for example, I am sure over the years someone has told you doing something was terribly wrong and was a undesirable behaviour, but you did it anyways because YOU wanted to even though you knew you shouldn't. Whilst I apprechiate a dog does not have the same though process as I human, I do think to some extent they will make decisions for themselves and will attack/bite if they strongly want to, knowing that the behaviour is wrong.
I am sure many of you will disagree with me, but I am open to all answers and would like some insight from other people. And I'm sorry if it is full of spelling mistakes, the spell check isn't working!
