  • Force needed to dunk?

Hi, this is a physics related question to determine how much force is necessary to accelerate someone fast enough to get enough lift to dunk a basketball.

Now I'm going to make the math simple by saying the vertical leap necessary is 1 meter. And I've already done the math to determine that you need a velocity of 4.42 meters/second to travel 1 meter high.

And at a mass of 75 kg, how much force would you need so that your initial velocity was 4.42 meters/second?

I want to find a value in Newtons, which would mean that I would use the formula F = ma

Which means that I need an acceleration value. Would the acceleration just be the velocity divided by the time needed to jump (time it takes to bend upwards after you have bent down)?

If I estimated that the time to jump was 0.25 seconds. The acceleration would be (4.42/0.25) = 17.68 meters/second^2

    F = (75kg)(17.68) = 1326 N

And add the downward force on 75kg due to gravity which is 735 N

You get a total force of 2061N of force in order to lift off the ground at 4.42 meters/second.

Is this method correct? There is a website called dunk calculator and it says that the force necessary to jump 1 meter at a weight of 75kg is about 4500 newtons.

  • Restaurant's Legal Obligation to Serve You?

I was at a restaurant today and was on the wait list to get seated. They told us it would be a 90 minute wait, and as it was Grand Opening, we were fine with that and waited. After 75 minutes we decided to call them to see how the wait was, and then they told us that we can't be served because there was too many people. I was annoyed because we gave them our phone number next to our name on the wait list and they didn't call us to tell us that we couldn't be served. Thus, making our 75 minute wait a complete waste of time.

I'm just curious, is it okay for restaurants to not tell people that they are declined from the wait list and let them find out after waiting for a long period of time that they are not going to get served? It sounds very unprofessional, almost illegal to do.

Does anyone know about this? I'm just curious, not seeking any type of action towards this restaurant as I do plan to be a regular.

  • Cooling A Room with Large Amount of Water?

The summer is coming (yay!) but with that comes intense heat, especially in my city. So I was wondering if it's possible to keep the temperature in my room cool (low 70s degrees) by having a large amount of water in their, whether it be in tanks or 5 gallon containers.

Water has a much higher heat capacity than air, so if I kept like 50 gallons of water in my room in a container, would that regulate the temperature to be around the 70s even though normally it would get to the 80s?

I'm curious because air has a heat capacity of 1 joule per gram degrees while water is a little over 4 times that.

  • How Are Tips Split At a Restaurant?

The other day my friends and I were at Olive Garden and we were tipping our waiter after we finished our meal. I recalled that tips left on the table in cash are added up and split evenly amongst the staff while tips written on the receipt after signing for your credit card go directly to your server.

So I wanted to know if this is true. How do you ensure that your specific server gets the tip and it's not dumped into a pile to be split among all of the staff. And does this even happen? Also what restaurants does this apply to, like Olive Garden, Cheesecake factory etc?

    Thanks!

  • What do knee braces or straps do?

When I play basketball for a couple hours, my knee area starts to get that burning aching sensation that you get when you're tired. It's a similar feeling to when you work out a muscle and you get that burning feeling. Well I begin to feel slightly that feeling around my knee and sometimes on my shin. I'm not sure what this is called, but do you know a proper term to define this?

I've also looked at knee braces and knee straps and according to the product description they are really helpful for jumper's knee or patellar tendinitis and other things I don't really understand. Can you explain to me what these knee braces and straps do, and will it probably help with my knees?

By the time I've spent 5 hours on the basketball court, playing here and there and resting sometimes in between, my knees feel slightly painful and tired and it gives you that feeling where you just want sit and don't want to play anymore. I don't think it's anything serious since I'm only 19 and not overweight, but I heard that continually stressing your knee can wear it out over time and that a knee strap or band/brace will align your knee better and cause it to perform better.

So can someone try to explain everything to me? It will be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

  • Flexible Eye Glasses?

Is there a way to make flexible glasses? I heard about a silicone hot glue gun or something and I was wondering if I could use that to make a frame for my glasses and put it my own lens. This way my glasses can bend around if I ever get hit in sports but it will just revert back to its regular shape. What are your ideas or where could I get materials to make such an item?

In short: playing basketball can result in my glasses getting bent out of shape.

And it would be awesome if I had glasses with a frame made from silicone or some other flexible but firm material.

  • Where to Order Thrifty's Ice Cream Big Tubs?

I've seen stores that sell hand dipped ice creams from big tubs with the label of Thrifty's. I know you can go to Rite Aid and buy the smaller tubs. But they don't have all of the flavors.

Where can I find a website that sells all the flavors in small or big tubs?

    Thanks!

  • Pokemon Stadium on the Wii?

I barely play video games but one video game I loved was Pokemon stadium. I know there's a feature on the wii where you can download past games and play it. I couldn't find pokemon stadium.

Is there a way to play pokemon stadium on the wii through some other download or something?

Also do you know if there are other versions of pokemon stadium besides pokemon stadium 2?

I also have another question. Is there a way to play the gameboy pokemon games (like yellow, red, blue) on the computer or wii? I like those games but it sucks having to play it on a tiny gameboy.

    Thanks!

  • Where to Download Past NBA Games?

I see a lot of videos on youtube where people upload nba games or clips of it. Where do people download the nba game files from?

I found one website but they require you to do a survey to have access to a game, and then it still doesn't work, I believe it's just a scam.

So what are some good websites?

    Thanks!

  • What's the Odds of the Lakers playing the Clippers in the Western Conference Finals?

I think the playoffs have had an interesting turn out so far. The top two Western teams have swept their opponents and are waiting for battle. The two LA teams have to play in a decisive game 7. Meanwhile, the teams in the East haven't had any sweeps.

Anyway, what's the odds (small chance I know) that the two LA teams will play against each other in the WCF? Lakers will have to win game 7, and then defeat OKC while the Clippers have to defeat Memphis and then defeat the Spurs.

I would guess like 1/20 chance something like that happens.

  • Was it Harder to get an Assist in NBA back then?

I've heard that back in the days in the NBA getting an assist was more harder than it is now. Apparently the criteria to count as an assist was more specific I guess.

    Is this true?

  • Will Getting An Air Filter Help Prevent Dust?

Hi, it's very annoying to find that my furniture gets dusty after a couple of months.

I was wondering if an air filter, like an ionic breeze or something, will get rid of this dust problem. Looking at amazon.com the air filters range from like 50-200 dollars and the description says it helps remove 99% of pollen, bacteria, dust, etc in the air.

Does this mean that it will remove the dust from the air and prevent dust buildup on furniture and stuff?

    Thanks!

  • Sport Goggles I can Wear On Top of Regular Prescription Glasses?

Does anyone know what kind of sports goggles I can wear on top of my regular prescription glasses while playing basketball? Some NBA players wear goggles like Amare Stoudemire but I don't think you could wear regular glasses underneath.

  • Do You Shoot a Basketball Looking at the Rim or at the Ball?

This question was brought up by Andre Iguadala during the All-star Game and apparently there are two different ways to shoot.

    1) You shoot staring at the rim and aiming towards it then you stare at the ball after release.

    2) You shoot and follow the ball.

    How do you shoot?

I personally stare at the rim first.
