  • How can I start a VBS at my church?

My church has never had a Vacation Bible School. I went to boyfriend's church today to their VBS wrap-up, and I have NEVER seen kids more excited about the word of God. To anyone who has ever been a VBS chairperson- how did you get it started? Do you have any tips for a first-timer? I am going to see what some of the parents from the parish want before I pitch my ideas to the priest, but any advice anyone can give me would be a great help. Thank you in advance!

  • What do you think of this name?

I heard a new name at a birthday party that I was working at- Signé (sin-ay). I wouldn't use it as a first name, definitely more of a middle name option. Thoughts on the name and possible combos? I don't like double middles. Thanks!

  • Introduce me to new names/combinations?

I'm not pregnant or trying, but I'm always looking for new names. So here's the deal- I'll give you my "list," you give me combinations or names that you think might fit well. Names are spelled the way I would use them; please don't alter spellings. My favorite answer gets 10 pts.

    Girls:

    Karen

    Susan

    Mackenzie

    Faylinn

    Kathleen

    Michaela

    Genevieve

    Samantha

    Adria

    Boys:

    Michael

    Richard

    Connor

    Logan

    Lucas

    Markus

    Jamie/James

Note: PLEASE do not tell me that you hate my names. They are ones that I like, and rudeness is not necessary. Just because they're "common, boring, old-fashioned" in your opinion does not mean that I'll change my tastes. Thank you.

  • Summer vacation is coming and I'm glad to be away from my SO?

I've been with my man for 4 years this summer, and everyone says our relationship is "perfect." I live with him in his dorm room because my roommate and I would not have meshed very well. We've been doing well until last week when I started feeling really depressed. It seems like all we do is fight, ignore each other because we're so wrapped up in our own lives, and have sex once in a while. We've talked about getting married and moving out West in a couple of years, but now I'm not sure that's what I want. I've also gotten really close with a male friend over the last school year and, if I was unattached, he's the type of guy I'd go for. I'm not about to throw away four years of relationship though, and we have to work in the same building next year. Do you think a summer apart will be helpful in figuring out what I want from "us?"

  • Women in American Islam?

I'm trying to write a paper for my Women in American Religion class on women and their role in American Islam, including the Nation of Islam. I was just wondering if anyone knew some sources that I could use. Note: I'm not asking you to write my paper for me. I'd just like to save some time since I have another large project due the same day. Thanks for any help you can give!

  • Need steak marinade recipe? 10 pts?

So next Sunday I'm making my fiance steak tips, and I'm looking for a great marinade. I'd prefer homemade, considering he made me homemade beef stroganoff for V-day, but store bought will probably work in a pinch. I do have a couple of stipulations, though. I cannot contain alcohol. I'm under 21 and so is he, so neither of us would be able to buy it. Also, if it's a quick marinade (marinate for 2-3 hours as opposed to overnight), I'd prefer that. I'm going home Friday-Sunday morning and won't be able to marinate anything overnight. Tastiest-looking recipe that meets stipulations gets 10 pts.

    Thank you!

  • Parents: What are your rules for kids and computers (kinda long)?

My fiance and I were talking about this tonight, and he and I have VERY different ideas. We're not parents yet, and I know today's technology will be obsolete by the time our kids are old enough to even know what a computer is, but any suggestions? I'm specifically looking for rules regarding (my answers are in parenthesis):

Where the computer should be (family room)

How old the kids should be when they get their first laptops and where can they use them (when they can pay for it, internet in family room, games and non-internet work in their rooms)

Webcams (only for Skyping with grandparents, maybe friends when they're a little older)

Parental controls (everything not absolutely necessary)

My fiance and I will have our own password-protected computers for work and whatnot.

Answers for all ages and parenting styles welcome, most detailed will get best answer :D

    Thanks!

  • New Naming Idea. Thoughts?

Okay, so I posted about a week ago asking what people thought about wanting to name my future kids after their grandparents. Some people liked it, some didn't. I have a new take on the tradition, and I want to know what people think. My fiance and I are both Irish and I'd love to live there someday. I was thinking that we take the Irish versions of our parents' names and use those. I haven't found one Irish version yet, for my dad's name, but I'm sure I can find something.

Here's what I have so far:

Kaitlyn Siusan/Kathleen Siusan (for Karen Susan)

    Micheal ________ (Micheal Richard)

If anyone has an Irish version of Richard they'd like to share, please do! And this isn't a definite thing, especially since neither of us are really in love with Siusan. Some people suggested that we find other ways to honor our parents, and I think this works. They get their own name and still have the same meanings as our parents. Thoughts?

  • If you had to name your baby after an athlete. . .?

Who would it be? My rules for this: use their first AND last name- last name will be your baby's middle name.

Boy: Jacoby Ellsbury Shackelford (Red Sox player)

Girl: Kristine Lilly Shackelford (Soccer star)

    Your turn!

  • What do you think of this?

So my parents named my brother and I after our grandparents (Dorothy Fay, Charles Ellsworth). We use the first name from each. I want to continue the tradition with my own children. My fiance agrees, so we're looking at Karen Susan and Micheal Richard (yes, I know that's not the usual way to spell Michael, but that's the way he spells it, so that's what we're doing). I think it's a great way to honor grandparents, especially ones who have passed, and it helps kids learn about family history. Anyone agree/disagree and why?

  • Decorating a dorm room?

So I just found out that I'm going to be an RA next year. . . Which means a single dorm room! Does anyone know any good websites to help decorate? Not for buying stuff, just cheap ideas. My TV and phone will probably be Disney princess themed, if that helps. Thanks!

  • Help!!! New Fish Mom Mistakes!?

So I was feeding my new fish tonight (one black moor, one bug-eyed goldfish thingy) and accidentally overfed them. My fiance and I took them out of the tank and changed most of the water out, but they had already eaten some. We got most of the food out. This is the first time that they have been overfed. Could I have killed them? Serious answers only, please.

  • To all parents. . . Would you rather buy your child?

A toy that encourages imagination but doesn't "do anything," or one that does everything but doesn't encourage imaginative play? Especially if there is data proving that toys that don't "do anything" are better for your child's development? I'm just wondering because there seems to be such a large market for these toys and, as a future toddler teacher, I want to know why.

10 pts for best answer, promise.
