  • Where can I listen to the Obama radio ad on gay marriage?

This morning while driving to work I heard a jingle on WPLJ, something like "Obama! Obama! Has created some drama!" and it had to do with his statement about being okay with gay marriage. I wish I could remember more of it, but it was so early in the morning I can barely remember. Anyone know where you can listen to this ad on the Internet? Thanks! :)

  • Did Snape "always" care for Harry Potter?

(Please take a minute to read my entire post before jumping to respond. Much appreciated.)

Just re-reading the chapter, The Prince's Tale, this evening, and I interpreted it a different way from how I'd ever understood it before.

In the past, I thought that "always" referred, indeed, to Harry Potter. I mean, this is shortly after his angry, "you raised him like a pig for slaughter" line.

But re-reading it tonight, I'm thinking he was actually referring solely to Lily. And in doing a few Internet searches, this seems to be the more frequent interpretation.

If this second interpretation is true, then this really destroys my internal conception of Severus Snape. I thought that when he said, "always," he was coming to terms with the fact that he had always, in fact, cared for Harry-- Harry as an individual, and not merely as the last remaining piece of Lily.

I get that he loathed the part of Harry that comes from James, BUT even so, I thought that Snape had come to see and care for Harry as an individual, not merely as Lily's shadow.

Now I fear I may have been wrong. Thoughts, anyone?

  • How can I hold back the tears when I'm at work?

I read recently that it's really bad to let yourself cry when you're at work, but sometimesI feel like I just can't help it! It probably happens about once a month (no, it's not period-related). Sometimes if I'm overtired, frustrated, angry, hurt... anything. I have no problem with the fact that I cry on a regular basis, it's my way of letting my emotions out-- but I want to keep it something I do in private, to be able to control myself when I'm at the workplace and save it for the car ride home, for example!

I'm not looking for advice on dealing with the over-arching issues, I'm looking for tips to use when I'm at work and feel the urge coming on-- anyone else deal with this problem, and have you found solutions to stifle the tears until a more appropriate time?

  • Any creative suggestions for dealing with depression, anxiety, and severe procrastination issues?

I feel stuck. Trapped. And I shut the world out more and more. Thank goodness for my job which forces me to be social. But when I go home, I just want to hide. I feel like a total mess. Part of me doesn't even know why I'm bothering to ask this here because it's hard for me to imagine that there really could be a solution. I know I'm grasping at straws. But it's worth a try.

  • What do you think of the fact that religiosity is negatively correlated with IQ?

On average, the higher one's IQ, the less likely it is that they believe in anything supernatural.

*OBVIOUSLY* there are plenty of exceptions-- so don't give me the whole "What about CS Lewis, he was a genius" thing... Of course there are extremely intelligent people who believe in the supernatural.

But..... when you look at the data as a whole, the general trend is that as intelligence goes up, believe in the supernatural goes down.

    Why is that?

  • Was Jesus' sacrifice enough to balance out humanity's eternal suffering?

This is a rephrasing of an earlier question.. Initially I'd asked if Jesus really sacrificed all that much-- and while I meant did he sacrifice much in comparison to billions of humans spending eternity in hell-- some answered the question at face value-- Yes, Jesus' DID sacrifice a LOT.. I get that.

My actual question is.... how does his degree of suffering in any way make up for the billions of people who would have spent eternity in hell? How on earth can you consider the two to be equal?

  • Did Jesus REALLY sacrifice all that much?

First of all, he spent less than 2 days separated from God-- 9am Friday to 6am Sunday.

Two days? If ALL of humanity is unworthy of being with God and deserving of eternal hell-fire, than how does one person spending two days in hell make up for all that?

Also, it's not like he dove into it thinking that he would be suffering there forever.. Based on previous statements, he was clearly aware that he would only be in that state for a few days, before joining God the Father for the rest of time.

  • What phrases are used in the US but not in other English speaking countries?

For those of you who live in English-speaking countries other than the United States, what phrases have you noticed that are solely American? I just learned recently that "go figure" is a saying that is only used over here. I'd be curious to know what other things like that there are?

(Example of things I've noticed with other countries: In Australia they say use the word "heaps" a lot, whereas in America you don't hear it so much.)

  • Thoughts on the 2nd Amendment?

For those who are in favor of stricter gun laws in the US.... How do you reconcile your beliefs with the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution which clearly protects the rights of individuals to bear arms? Would you propose creating a new Amendment that would overturn a lot of what is in the 2nd Amendment?

  • Zaphod Beeblebrox / G.W.Bush?

When they were making the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie in the early 2000's, were they intentionally Mocking Bush-43 with the Zaphod Beeblebrox character? It seems pretty obvious that they were, but I'd be interested to know if this was acknowledged or written about anywhere.

(I'm not referring to the book version, obviously, given that it was written long before either Bush entered the White House, and considering Zaphod's character was somewhat different in the book).
