  • French grammar conjugation, native speakers only please?

Hi! I'm writing poetry for my French V class, so I'm not exactly using formal sentences. My question is, can I have a conjugated verb without a subject immediately used before it? Here's an example:

    j’habite dans le nuit

    dors sans rêvant

    ....

Is the use of "dors" correct/acceptable, or would I need to literally put "je" before each instance? Thank you for your help.

  • Torque and ladder physics problem?

The problem: An 8 m, 400 N uniform ladder rests against a wall. The coefficient of static friction between the ladder and the ground is .55. A firefighter, weighing 875 N, stands 6.3 m from the bottom of the ladder, and the ladder makes a 50 degree angle with the ground. Assume that the ladder's weight acts on the center of the ladder.

I'm supposed to draw a free body diagram, figure out the sum of the forces in the x and y directions, the sum of the torques, and then find the forces that the wall and ground exert on the ladder (so, three forces--one from the wall, one horizontal from the ground, one vertical).

... I drew the FBD, but I have no clule where to go from here. Help!

Google translate assures me that it is "in paucis" but I'd like to make sure.

  • Help! Pulleys, tensions and systems in equilibrium...?

I am hopeless with pulleys... I'd like an answer, but even more than that, an explanation!

The flickr link shows the diagram given in the problem, and the words read: The system is in equilibrium and the pulleys are frictionless and massless. Find force T. The acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 m/s^2.

  • A 3.2 kg mass accelerates at...?

Hi, I need some help with a physics problem... my brain is fried and I don't know where to start. I made a vector triangle and promptly realized I had no idea what to do with it, so...

Full problem: A 3.2 kg mass accelerates at 13 m/s^2 in a direction 13◦ north of east. One of the two forces acting on the mass has a magnitude of 14.7 N and is directed north. Determine the magnitude of the second force.

  • How to translate "may" into French?

My French assignment is to translate a poem from English into French, but I'm having trouble conveying the phrase "may disease render you powerless". Google has assured me that pouvoir is the verb to use, but that doesn't really seem to fit. Advice, preferably from native speakers of French, is much desired.

  • Help with physics (resultant displacement)?

I can't figure out how you're supposed to solve this... I graphed it, but I kind of guessed as to the directionality of the first line, so my resultant was 74 km at 15 degrees N of E. That answer feels very, very wrong to me... does anyone know how to do this algebraicly? Or... maybe just better graphically?

A man travels from Rome to Utica for 40 km. At Utica, he heads to Old Forge at a heading of 30 degrees East of North for 35 km. Find the man's resultant displacement from the city of Rome.

  • Professional photographers: does Instagram bother you?

I take a lot of pictures, and the process I go through to develop film and make prints is really important to me, but I definitely don't consider myself a photographer... I'm an amateur at best. But does this slew of people instagramming and calling it photography bother any of you who really make their living off of shooting?

  • Who's up for a writing challenge?

Here's the game. I'll give you a first sentence, and you write a story to follow it--as long or short as you want, erring on the short side. ;) Have fun!

"There are no windows in my house."

  • Definition of "African-American"?

A friend of mine grew up in Africa and moved to the U.S. when he was in high school. When he tells people that he's African-American, they think he's joking because he's white. How should he identify himself?

  • Do you consider yourself a patriot?

And by that, I don't mean that you root for the New England Patriots.

Do you love your country, and if so, why? For me, I love the USA because of the political system. I might not always like who's in charge, but I love that we as citizens can have such an active role in politics. I love that I get to vote. I love that I know my rights. I love the Constitution. I just love it!

  • What do you look for in a guy/girl?

For me... he has to be smart. I'm not looking for a certain SAT score, but he needs a good vocabulary and a passion for hard work.

And a defined jawline never hurt. :D

  • Have you ever looked back on something you'd written, and just laughed?

I was going through old files on my computer and I came across these House fanfiction stories I wrote when I was around twelve. They're... so genuinely terrible. I can't even believe I could have written something so lame!
