  • Why does 10mmol (180mg/dl) feel like im starting to have a hypo?

Im fairly new to the diagnosis of diabetes and am taking insulin going up 2 units per day till I reach the level of 6-7mmol (128-146mg/dl) however today when I have reached 10mmol (180mg/dl) I feel like Im starting to have a hypo and having some glucose Jelly Beans helps me to feel better and my blood glucose goes up to 14mmol (252mg/dl) Im currently on 28 units and tomorrow I should go to 30 units (morning and before dinner) as Im still not normal ... I have tried googling this and have found only one site that said if your body has been used to a high level for some time (mine was averaging 26mmol or 468mg/dl) that the body can react to being low even though its still not normal ... if this is the case how long do I put up with the hyo feeling and then 5 jelly beans before my body is happy with the lower blood glucose levels that should be normal?

  • Blood sugar reading 21mmol newly diagnosed diabetic?

I have seen a diabetes educator who instructed me to test fasting (morning) and 2 hours after dinner waiting on endocrynologist appointment - fasting average 11-14 MMOL and 2hrs after dinner average 17-19MMOL right now 2 hrs after dinner reading is 21MMOL my app that I use to record levels only goes to 20.9MMOL so I guess 21.0 is quite high ... what should I do to lower level or what should I do in general in 3 weeks my levels have been nowhere near normal. GP wont prescribe anything for me as I cant tollerate Metformin and I have several other medcations and conditions so waiting to see endocrynologist. Worried about not tollerating other meds - thinking about asking endo about insulin instead.... thoughts??

  • Having trouble ignoring Tinnitus?

I have Menieres and have had a degree of Tinnitus for some time now however its now constant and seems louder than it used to be so much so I am now having trouble ignoring it .. when its quiet it seems quite loud even with the TV on .. I have turned my TV up a bit to try to block the whistling sound in my head and it does help me block it out but not completely ... when Im shopping in a busy shopping centre I dont hear the tinnitus ... what have others done to block out or ignore the tinnitus sounds?

  • Tinnitus and hearing loss in right ear with Menieres?

I am a 40 year old female:- About 2 years ago I was dianosed with Menieres my affected ear was mainly the right ear I was prescribed Serc and fluid tablets and it kept the symptoms under control for the most part and it was only intermittantly that I would have symptoms now the Serc doesnt work at all I even tried doubling up on the dose and it didnt help - now I have Tinnitus (ringing in my ear) 24/7 which can be blocked somewhat with white noise (like a shopping centre noise) but when Im in silence or I lie down to go to bed it gets quite bad.

The other new symptom is hearing loss in my right ear this has been constant and going on for 2 weeks now I have trouble hearing people and what they are saying - example: I was with my 11 year old daughter at a shopping centre when a stranger stopped me and asked me something I couldnt hear her the only word I caught was earrings and I must have looked confused so she repeated the question and again I only caught earrings (I was trying to read her lips as well) then my daughter (who I can hear maybe her pitch) said "Mum she wants to know where priceline is" I said "OH" and went to tell her but she rolled her eyes and walked off.

Another incident I was at my daughters Cheer gym and someone asked me a question I thought she asked me where the toilet was so I told her she looked confused and again asked me the question and pointed to her wrist and it was then I realised she was asking me the time.

Today being Christmas Day everything is closed in regards to hearing tests and seeing specialists so Im trying to just put up with it for now ... I visited my Aunt and she suggested I might need a hearing aid as I couldnt hear a lot of what she was saying - we then visited my parents and sister and my father (who also has Menieres and is completely deaf in one ear from a motorcycle accident when he was in his 20s and has tinnitus in his other ear and hearing loss and he does have a hearing aid) anyway my father suggested I should look into possibly getting a hearing aid - I have a hearing test and ENT appointment on 22 January but until then there isnt a lot I can do.

I have done online hearing tests with earphones I pass with the left ear and fail dismally with my right ear.

I am getting tired easily and head aches from straining to hear people (for example if there are 2 conversations going on in a room I cant focus on the person Im speaking to) Im trying to lip read to match the shapes of the mouth with the sounds im hearing to try to understand what is being said and all this with still one good ear im still having all this problem .... my question (sorry took me a long time to get to it) what can I expect when I see the ENT? Is a hearing aid an option? Ive read about white noise generators is this better although Im not sure it will help with the hearing loss it would just block the tinnitus... What have other people experienced? What has helped you or someone you know in my situation?

  • Daughter with Salmonella Poisoning?

My daughter has been really sick for about a week and a half we found out just 2 days ago after a fecal test that she had Salmonella - She is now really well within herself but Im keeping her home from school as she still tires easily and is sleeping more than usual still ... she lost weight while really sick (she trains like an elite athlete so she is really fit and doesnt have much in the way of weight to lose) she has started back at her sport but on a take it easy kind of training but isnt able to tumble very well and she does the best at this normally and she comes home and goes to sleep - usually she would go out the back and jump around on the trampoline after training ... I tried Googling how long it takes to get over this but I just find heaps of web sites that tell me what Salmonella is and what to do when the symptoms are bad ... so my question is how long should I keep her away from school? How long can I expect her to tire easily? I understand some will question why she is training in her afterschool sports and dance etc when she isnt even at school but she really enjoys it and I thought if she takes it easy it might build up her stamina again and I dont have her at school yet because I think that for a kid with ADHD as my daughter has - sitting around in a school classroom for several hours per day plus exercise and sports at school might be more tiring mentally and physically ... one parent suggested I try sending her to school on Monday with just half days to start with ... what are your thoughts?

  • puppy drinks and urinates excessively?

I have an Irish Wolfhound puppy (14 weeks old) who is about 20kg or 44 pounds ... I have noticed he drinks quite a bit (around 2 litres a day or more) ... I just sat and watched him drink constantly non stop for about 3 minutes - he went outside for a pee and then yawned and a heap of water came pouring out his mouth like he drank so much his stomach couldn't hold it all (he didn't make the normal vomit noises or body actions) it just poured out his mouth like a tap had been turned on. I have a vet appointment for him this afternoon as Im concerned it might be diabetes but what other conditions should I discuss with the vets?

  • My 8 week old puppy (Irish Wolfhound X) bites my hands and arms incessantly?

My 8 week old puppy (an Irish Wolfhound X) bites alot ... I understand he is teething and we have a tonne of chew toys for him but his favorite thing to chew on are my arms and hands - its like he licks with his teeth - we have tried the "NO" and "OUCH" but it doesnt work, we have tried the Caesar Millan things of "SHHHHHHT" with pretend bite to the puppy (with fingers) we have tried yelping like a dog which did work for a couple of days but no longer working and currently we are trying the stand up and walk away method which is working to a degree but honestly the more we tell him he cant bite the more desperate he gets to have to bite us again and again over and over. I have googled this and found the suggestions of what I have tried but he just wont stop biting! He isnt being aggressive there is no growling its just play - I have had him for 3 weeks now (I know its too young to be away from mum and litter but mum had been removed from the litter at 4 weeks and they had no human contact and had fleas and worms I thought he had a better chance with us so please no haters or critasism about taking puppy too young - it was almost like a pup that is neglected by mum - same thing he is now thriving)

The other issue I have is that our older dog a Shihtzu X wants nothing to do with the puppy if he comes near her she growls and runs - he doesnt jump all over her (he isnt given the opportunity to) I have the idea of walking them together which I havent been able to try as I have only had him at the vets for his first shots so we cant go outside with him yet.

    Thanks :)

  • problem with dreadlocks breaking?

I had my dreadlocks done crochet style and was fine for 6 months but then went to a different place alot closer to home and they were cheaper for some maintenance and they used pipecleaners and perming solution which Im not overly sure they washed out properly - in the first week I lost 2 dreads and then over time I have lost a further 6 (2 today) Im wondering what I can do to rectify the situaltion?

If you dont like dreads Im not interested in being asked why I have them or your negative opinion of them they are something I like.

  • my daughter has adhd and I suspect she also has Aspergers?

My 9 year old daughter was diagnosed ADHD about 8 months ago - she takes 20mg Ritalin LA each day and is responding well to it ... however now we have the ADHD symptoms under control Im starting to notice Aspergers symptoms as has a lot of other people in our lives ... too many to mention here ... we went to her paediatrician who wants her teacher to fill in a form and has said that it comes down to what the teacher sees at school but she trains 6-7 days a week as a cheer leader and is actually very good at it and surpasses others really quickly - in 1 year she has learned what usually takes others several years to pick up and is in the clubs junior elite squad ... she is very good at what interests her but not so good at what doesnt interest her. She loves going to school even though she isnt very good at it - problems are that she has no idea about social cues and in fact doesnt even realise when people find her overwhelming, she hates change and thrives on routine - if there is a change in routine she must be told about it well in advance or it throws her and she is unable to handle it.

Well like I said there are too many symptoms to mention here but just wonder if others have experience with ADHD kids who have dyslexia (sorry forgot to mention that one) and who have aspergers ... how do you get around problems when they arise? I know there is no medication for aspergers but I need to get her diagnosed if thats the problem and then I have to learn how to cope with it (Im doing the best I can and she is mostly happy - its when others are trying to teach her or discuss things with her they run into trouble especially if she cant understand what they are talking about)

  • bipolar and trying to withdraw from benzos?

I have bipolar and over the years starting 10 years before I was diagnosed Bipolar have been self medicating with Benzos for sleep and to calm down - about 2 years ago my psychiatrist placed me in a pysch hospital specifically to withdraw from the Alodorm (Mogadon) and it was done in 3 weeks - I coped well and didnt have too much in the way of side effects as my Seroquel dose was raised a little and seemed to keep me stable.

Unfortunately thought the 3 weeks was probably not enough as I got back on the Alodorm again quite quickly - now I have been working with my GP on withdrawing again only at home and much slower than before - the first month I went from 2 tablets at night to 1 and a half tablets - month 2 I dropped to 1 tablet each night - month 3 which I am 2 weeks into I am taking 1 tablet one night and half a tablet the next night - I am now finding I am getting very easily anxious, talking fast, not sleeping as well - I feel like Im heading into a manic episode wich I havent experienced in well over a year now as the Seroquel has kept me quite stable. I have started feeling the need to take Valium now ranging from 2 to 4 in a day.

I called my psychiatrists office today to find out when I could get an appointment and was told a month as he is away - they got another psychiatrist who I have never seen to call me - I explained the situation and that I am now just replacing 1 Benzo for another (Alodorm and now Valium instead) and she said that as my GP has been working with me to withdraw from the Alodorm I should go back to her and maybe my dose withdrawl should be slowed down more but my GP could call her if needed.

I explained that usually if my levels are not right my psychiatrist would usually up my seroquel but she didnt really want to advise me to do that ... just wondering what others have done with bipolar and withdrawing from benzos ... or anyone who knows about the topic ... what would you suggest?? What should I discuss with the GP tomorrow when I go?

Sorry this is so long ... guess its just another point that shows my bipolar symptoms are starting to come through - I talk toooo much! OH and its 2.10am here and I cant sleep - so yeah OK ill shut up now - thanks for any advice!

  • how to get kids to sleep on ritalin?

My 8 yr old daughter has been diagnosed with ADHD and was put on Ritalin 10 which is a short acting Ritalin - it lasts about 4 hours .. she takes her first dose with breakfast and her second dose with lunch and then nothing after that.

Since being on Ritalin her focus is so much better - in fact everything is much better EXCEPT even though her second dose should have worn off by dinner time AND she does rigorus exercise each day after school (in the form of gymnastics, cheerleading, tumbling and Jazz) she cant get to sleep until around 1am - 2am in the morning (this is the same on the 2 days per week she does no exercise)

Yesterday I gave her the morning dose and didnt give her the lunch dose - it was still 2am before she fell asleep ... I always get her up around 8am in the morning so she isnt sleeping in and she is not sleepy during the day.

Her teacher tells me she is doing so much better at school - Im wondering if she was on one of the long lasting meds you take once per day if she would sleep better as they only last 12 hours so if she took it in the morning would she sleep better at night?

Has anyone had experience with this? How do you get a child to sleep on Ritalin???

  • How do you correct a crooked smile after Bells Palsy?

I have had a crooked smile for a couple of years now .. only just went to the Drs and was told I would have had a mild case of Bells Palsy in the past - my mouth wont go up on the left when I smile and I have a lot of headaches on the left side of my head and face ... I have done some reading around by Googling Bells palsy but I only really see surgery as a fix ... does anyone know fo effective treatments that are not so invasive? Would love to smile again properly one day!

  • my 8 yr old daughter has learning difficulties - just found out dyslexia and ADHD?

my 8 yr old daughter has learning difficulties - just found out dyslexia and ADHD Im wondering which direction I should go as far as helping her, the people who diagnosed the dyslexia say she needs a teachers aid in school but her IQ is above 70 so she doesnt qualify, then there is the whole do I drug or not drug for the ADHD

Basically Im asking where do I start in helping her? Do we work on the ADHD first (either drug or non drug treatment) and then work on the dyslexia or do we do it the other way round - dyslexia then the ADHD - OR is there a treatment that is effective for both conditions?

We are currently on school holidays for the next 2 and a half weeks - Im waiting on the written reports from the specialists who have tested her and I am then meeting up with her school teacher and a school counsellor to work out some strategies to help my daughter and hopefully she can become less disruptive in the classroom and can hopefully learn more effectively - Im basically just doing my homework while she is on holidays so I am ready for this meeting next school term.

  • lumpy painful breasts ...?

I have had pain in my breasts for over a month now ... I waited out a period cycle and nothing changed .. did a self breast exam but coudnt destinguish any lumps like peas or anything it just felt really lumpy everywhere so I went to my GP today and she did an exam and has sent me off for an ultrasound with the possibility of a mamogram depending on what they find and on the test request form she has written VERY lumpy painful breasts ... From what I have read on the net and my GP said that cancer isnt painful so its probably just cysts (I hope thats all it is ... no breast cancer in my family) but what should I do to reduce the pain? Just walking can be enough ... Lets just say Im well endowed and cursed with large breasts - I cant wear proper bras or proper sports bras (normal bras hurt and sports bras with propper support cause heat rashes within a day) so I just wear minimal support sports type bras day and night (too uncomfortable at night if I dont) ... The Dr said to try Evening Primrose Oil Capsules which I will buy tomorrow but other than that is there anything I can do?

  • 8 year old with overactive bladder nothing so far helping?

My daughter has never stopped wetting herself - she was put onto Ditropan and it worked but it made her get fecal loading (really bad constipation) that took a month to clear and it also makes her overheat really quickly on hot days - she was changed to Vesicare and the overheating has stopped as has the fecal loading but its not helping all that much with the wetting herself especially at gymnastics she has been sent home a few times because she had an accident ... she is also using a tens machine each day but if its doing anything its not consistant.

When she has to urinate she doesnt get much warning and when she needs to go she needs to go straight away she cant hold on

She is currently seeing a paediatric urology physiotherapist and has been seeing her about 6 months now - Im wondering if there is a surgery that could help??? Or another medication???

  • People with Bipolar do you ever second guess your moods and wonder?

Just wondering if others do this but I could be having a conversation with someone and feel like Im talking quickly and I then start backing off because maybe Im talking too much ... am I becoming manic?? On the other hand like today I was just in a foul mood and everything annoyed me I then wondered if I was getting depression ... I find myself a little more paranoid about the mania side because I never really realise I have the mania till someone tells me so if I think Im talking fast I start panicking that the person Im talking to might notice something (I might not be talking fast at all its just my mind tells me that I might be)

Another thing I get is other people (family usually) who know I have bipolar will ask me if Im depressed or am I manic - usually Im not its just a mood one way or the other I seem to be able to be certain in my answer to them but I do find it annoying that I cant have emotions good or bad without people thinking Im heading into an episode.
