Im Zusammenhang mit dem UN-Teilungsplan für Palästina 1947 taucht der o.a. geographische Begriff auf, den ich nirgends, auch nicht im Internet mit "googeln" erklärt finde. Kann mir jemand weiterhelfen?

Anybody knows this poem? It's very special with it's many alliterations.

I found 2 versions of the last verse:

the first one: Zeus', Zarpeter's, Zoroaster's zeal attracting all, arms against acts appeal !

the second one : Zeus', Zarpeter's, Zoroaster's zeal again attract, arts against arms appeal!

I think the poet wants to show that humanity doesn't show itself in acts of violence as war, but in acts of peace, so I should favour the second version, wheras the first one may be misunderstood as appealing to "arms". Or does he mean the "zeal" as arms against acts (of violence).

I know it is a very sophisticated question and I'm curious if anybody might discuss!

Willard Mitt Romney will presumably run for presidency. Usually the first names are Christian names (Willard), the second names, most often abbreviated as middle initials, may be another Christian name or alternatively a surname. So in JFK the F stands for grandfather John Fitzgerald, and in LBJ the B stands for Lyndon Baines, in FDR it is Franklin Delano, and so on. In BHO (not so familiar) it's Barack Hussein, an Arabian prename. But what's Mitt? A surname or a prename? I never heard of it as a Christian name. Anybody knows? An abbreviation for what?

In the 60ies and 70ies there were so many western movies in TV: Laramie, Bonanza, High Chaperall, Shilo Ranch, Big Valley...This genre having completely died? Why

I know, sophomore is the second year in college. But where is the word derived from? Has it to do with the Greek "sophos" (wise) in the sense of "more wise" or ist there a completely different etymology?

Can anybody explain to me the rules of the Italian TV competition "Amici serale". There ars singers, dancers and artists competing for their common team but I don't understand the rules. After weekly performances they get to a final and a winner. There are lots of spots in youtube.

Nachdem mein Audio-Verstärker den Geist aufgegeben hat, mußte ich einen neuen kaufen. Jetzt höre ich CD und Phono wunderbar über 2 Lautsprecher, Rundfunkempfang nur über einen. Den korrekten Sitz der Verbindunngskabel zwischen Receiver und Verstärker habe ich mehrfach überprüft. Ist also jetzt der Ausgang des Receivers zu einem der Lautsprecher kaputt? Ist das zu reparieren oder lohnt sich das nicht und sollte ich gleich einen neuen Receiver kaufen?

Bei Wohltätigkeits-fernsehsendungen wie jetzt für Haiti wird gewöhnlich zu Spenden über Telefon aufgerufen. Werden die Beträge jeweils direkt über das Telefonkonto abgebucht und erscheinen dann in der nächsten Monatsabrechnung? Kann der Betrag dann steuerlich geltend gemacht werden?

Bei den Bundestagswahlergebnissen der CSU wurde immer differenziert zwischen 6,9% bundesweit und 41% bayernbezogen. Heißt das, daß die CSU in Bayern mindestens so um die 30% braucht, um überhaupt in den Bundestag zu kommen, d.h. die bundesweite 5%-Hürde zu schaffen? Noch (!) ist das ja kein Problem!

Wie ich es verstehe, entstehen Überhangmandate dadurch, daß eine Partei in einem gemischten Wahlsystem mehr Direktmandate nach dem Mehrheitswahlrecht erwirbt, als ihr nach dem Verhältniswahlrecht zustehen. Bei der Bundestagswahl darf sie diese Mandate behalten ohne Ausgleich für die anderen Parteien, die dadurch prozentual nach dem Zweitstimmenergebnis in Nachteil geraten. Aber: es handelt sich durchweg um Direktmandate, die mit dieser Bezeichnung diskreditiert werden. Außerdem: "das Überhangmandat" gibt es m.E. nicht, es gibt nur "Überhangmandate" als Pluralbegriff, denn sie sind nicht individuell zuzuordnen. Meiner Auffassung nach wäre der Begriff "überproportionale Direktmandate" korrekter. die Bezeichnung "Überhangmandat" unterstellt eine Illegitimität oder Zweitklassigkeit, die in keiner Weise gegeben ist, das das Wahlgesetz der Bundesrepublik bewußt Elemente des Mehrheitswahlrechts aufgenommen hat und eben kein reines Verhältniswahlrecht ist.

In television reporters always pronounce him the English way (Rodsher), but he is Swiss, so I would imagine, the German (Rogher) or French way (Roshee) of pronouncing is more adequate. Anybody knows?

The official dresscode is leotard plus long pants, shorts only for floor-performance. In training most of male gymnasts go shirtless over pants,in warmup before competition they use to have their leo sagged down to the waist with their chest bare, and they only get fully dressed for the (short) moment of competition. Immediatelly after performing they tear their leo down again and may pull over a T-shirt or a jacket. I thought it might be inconvenient if the lycra gets wet by sweat and sticks to the skin, so most guys tear their leo down to have it completely dry in the moment of performance?

When was it established in the history of athletics? I mean you could principally run clockwise as well!

In concerts broadcasted in TV I often notice that the picture is behind the sound about 0.1 to 0.2 seconds. It's not so striking in slow tempi, but you can realize that in quick tempi watching the bows of string instruments or the fingers of the pianist. I notized the same thing in an open air concert when the picture on the screen was late about the same time compared to the real movements. I don't understand much technics, but I wonder if this asynchronicity, which is sometimes rather disturbing, is technically inevitable.

Do you think it is more a question of esthetics or of sexual attraction that male dancers very often have to perform barechested in ballet?

Would it be more attractive for amateur and youth boxing, if mals fighters would go shirtless and gearless?
