  • Can someone hold a parking spot without a car?

I was in Manhattan looking for a parking spot on Friday and after an hour searching for one (not exaggerating) I finally found one, but a guy was standing in it. I pulled right up asking him nicely to move to the side so I can park, but he said his friend's car will be coming to park there. I told him that his friend's car isn't here, and that he can't just take up a spot without a car. He didn't budge. Unsatisfied, but I just left looking for another spot.

I don't know what I could do, but I felt really upset. It isn't legal for someone to hold a spot for someone else especially when they're not even there with a car is it?

  • What to watch out for when returning a leased vehicle?

I have a 2005 C230. My lease with mercedes benz expires at the end of the year. When returning this leased vehicle, what are some things that dealerships will try to put the screw to me for? I'm just trying to avoid being pushed to pay for unreasonable things. Any tips? I don't plan on leasing another vehicle from MB because their quality is not justified by their price. Over this lease period, both my head lights failed, my rear right break light also broke, license plate lights were gone too, and "check engine" sign lit up twice.

  • My sneakers are hurting me?

I just got new nike sneakers (air max penny 1) and I love them, but it's hurting my left pinky toe when ever I run or walk with them. It's when the shoe bends (in the motion of walking) that the shoe actually digs into my left pinky toe. The strange thing is that my right pinky toe is completly fine. I still love the sneakers and would like to continue wearing them. Any suggestions on how I can improve my situation?

  • Regular gas? But my car can only take 91 octane or higher!?

I live in NY so I usually fill up myself, but I stopped into this full service gas station and asked them "super, fill up". After filling up, I read the receipt and I found they put regular gas into my car. I have a 2005 C230 Kompressor and that takes only 91 octanes or higher. I showed the guy who filled up my car the receipt asked him what we should do about it, but he just brushed me off. His co-worker was trying to smooth talking me out of it which I did not appreciate it one bit because they don't care what happens to my car, they just don't want to take responsibility.

Would anything bad happen to my car driving with regular gas? I know newer cars today comes with knock sensors to regulate pistons if lower octane gas is fed to the car. The problem is my car is turbo charged so I'm not sure if this would cause engine damage.

If it does, what should I do (besides fixing my car up)? Can I sue them for damages?

  • Types of mortgages for a commercial building?

I am trying to purchase a mixed use building (5 residential units and 2-4 commercial stores) in NJ. I know that commercial mortgages are a little different from home mortgages (i.e. there are no 30 year loans).

What different types of mortgages are available for purchasing a building like this?

Also, the money borrowed to buy a home is called a mortgage, is it also the same term used for buying a commercial property?

  • Tax return error?

I just got my tax return via direct deposit. They refunded me short of about $250. I called IRS's automated system and the system tells me that I made an error with my tax return that was why it was short. So I went back and redid my form (since I don't have a complicated case) and I found that though I did make a mistake on my filing, but I was still short of exactly $75.

Not that $75 is a big deal, but what I would like to know is that: Does the IRS penalize you if they find mistakes on your tax return hence the missing $75? If it were $75.82 or some cent, then I would assume I overlooked a mistake, but the whole dollar amount leads me to think that it was a fine.

  • Guilty, not feeling up for charity...?

On Friday, an African American woman and her son (must have been about 8-10 years old) walked up to me while I was in New York city and asked me if I could give them some money for food. The woman looked lost and had tears in her eyes, but the son looks emotionless. I replied, "You should find the police, they should be able to help you out." She replied, "Forget it, we're black." and walked away.

I do feel really bad for not offering to help out, but I've given money to strangers (either that they "lost" their wallets, don't have money for food or even a train ride home, and etc...) that asked me for money in the last 2 years. After I gave those strangers money, I asked them to e-mail me back to let me know they've gotten home safely. You know how many e-mails I've gotten from those strangers? None... Not 1 had the decency to tell me that my money was well spent. So now I've rejected the last two attempts of strangers asking me for money. What would you guys do?

  • Refrigerated Meat: How long do I have?

How long can I refrigerate meat (chicken, beef, and pork) before I shouldn't be cooking them for consumption? Do each of those three have a different expiration date in my freezer? I usually buy meat from regular supermarkets.

  • Temporary Housing (weekly) in New York?

I have family coming over to New York during x-mas. They need a place to stay for about 2 weeks since my small studio apartment in Nassau is not going to be able to host them. Where can I look for temporary rentals by the week or by the month?

Please don't suggest www.craigslist.com since I already know that and wouldn't be asking this question if craigslist can resolve my question.

  • Minor traffic accidents: The annoying problem of a few scratches...?

How should one handle minor traffic accidents (2 cars) when a few scratches was the result of 1 ignorant driver? On a 3 lane road, I was on the left lane when a car in the middle lane made a left while I was right next to him. Though I broke hard, I still had a few scratches on the right hand side of my front bumper. The scratches are small, but I was really upset because first it was a new car and second the ignorant driver wanted to play cool as if nothing happened and just wanted to walk away.

Not sure what I should do in this case. Do I wait until the police arrive and file a report with them? Call my insurance company up and tell them about this accident (but I'm afraid that my rates would go up because this)? or just suck it in and walk away from it?
