  • Is Samson et Dalila a grand opera?

Wikipedia says that the opera Samson et Dalila by Camille Saint-Saëns is a grand opera, but I'm having trouble finding other reliable sources to back it up.

Side note, by "grand opera" I'm referring to the subgenre within opera. I am NOT seeking opinions on the magnificence of the opera but rather asking if anyone knows if Samson et Dalila fulfills the criteria to be considered a "grand opera."

  • Do you prefer Italian, German, or French opera?

I have heard Italian opera described as "soft" and "refined", German opera as "big", and French opera as "colorful" and "grand". Many opera-goers seem to notice differences. Which of the "Big Three" is your favorite and why?

  • What to do to treat jock itch in Italy?

I'm an American studying abroad for the summer in Italy. I've had jock itch for a while now but all my cream, medicine etc has run out. Can anyone give me some tips on how to get some more medicine/ointment here in Italy? Does anyone know the Italian translation of "jock itch" or if a typical pharmacy here carries this sort of product. I was hoping to get over-the-counter stuff so I don't have to deal with seeing a doctor in a foreign country. Thanks for your help.

  • Does it sound like I have ADHD?

I'm 19, male, and have bipolar disorder ii also. My doctor suspected that I also have ADHD so he put my on Concerta. I've been on the drug for a little over two weeks now and feel basically no different except I might be a little bit less restless. Would I be totally amped by now if I didn't have ADHD? Does is seem like I do have the disorder?

  • What happens when people without ADD/ADHD take adderall?

I'm curious because my doctor and I are unsure whether I have the disorder or not. He is going to put me on adderall in a few days, and I want to know what I should expect in either case.

  • Do some students with ADHD do well in school?

I always hear that students with ADHD perform poorly in their classes, but is this always the case? I personally show several symptoms of the disorder and my doctor is considering placing me in treatment for it, but we are both somewhat reluctant to do so because while I often have trouble concentrating in school, I do well nonetheless. What do you know on the topic?

  • Can ADHD be masked in children?

My doctors want to diagnose me with ADHD hyperactive/impulsive type but are having a little bit of trouble because though I display several symptoms now, I did not always overtly display them as a child. For example, now I deal with perpetual boredom, an inability to sit still, and distractibility. I also respond well to ADHD medication (without getting a "high.")

But as a child, I was a good student in school. In fact, now I even have a full scholarship to a university--so academics were never an issue. I also don't necessarily remember having the problems I listed above as a child. BUT, I was obese. Though I've lost the weight now, I remember I used to eat out of boredom. Also, I used to only disrupt class in small classroom settings, in which there were only a few students or if I was very comfortable with the other students. (i.e. Once I was almost permanently kicked out of gifted class because I had a history of disrupting the class.) I don't recall disrupting the vast majority of classes though, but I also had social anxiety so I think I might have been too shy to disrupt.

As you can see, I have my own theories about what's going on, but I want other people's opinions. And there has to be an explanation to this boredom and restlessness. What do you think? Could my childhood ADHD have been masked?

  • Do you think Los Angeles is tacky?

Do you think Los Angeles' and Hollywood's culture are a bit too much or do you find them endearing and tasteful? Also, is your opinion of Orange County any different? I'm just trying to get a feel for most people's opinions.

  • What can you do with a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration?

I've looked on the websites of several universities, and all the presidents, provosts, and deans of those universities hold Ph.D. degrees in other areas, such as economics, history, psychology, or the like. Is a Ph.D. in higher education or higher education administration an impractical degree?

  • What is your impression of Rhode Island?

Do you like the state of Rhode Island? What is it like there? What are the people like? Is it a good place to raise a family? To travel? Does it have a good nightlife? Is it a pretty state? I myself am more of a big city type person, but from what I hear, Rhode Island seems like it would be a pretty nice place to live, or at least go get away from the big city.

(Don't feel pressured to answer these questions specifically; anything you have to say about the state is appreciated.)

  • Which antidepressant works best for depression marked by heavy guilt?

I've been seeing a few psychiatrists for a while and they are trying to get me on the right medication, but I was wondering if anyone here could help me with some advice. My doctors believe at the moment that I may have bipolar disorder. During my depressive episodes, I experience a lot of very exaggerated guilt, a generally low mood, and lots of difficulty experiencing. I do NOT typically experience the lethargic-type depression that is very common in other people. My manic episodes are almost never euphoric. They are marked primarily with irritability and impulsivity and maybe feelings of grandeur. I am most concerned with finding the best medicine for my depression but any help is appreciated. Do you know of any antidepressants that are especially effective for the symptoms I have described here? Thank you for your help.

  • Is this an example of a visual hallucination?

A few weeks ago at college (and I really do mean this question in all seriousness), I was consuming relatively large amounts of alcohol, marijuana, and caffeine daily. I was also on 100 to 200 mg of zoloft for depression and anxiety. During the day though while I was sober, I would every few minutes experience a change in speed of my perception. Literally it would seem like time had slowed down for a millisecond but then catch up very quickly. Or time would speed up for a millisecond and then slow back down to catch up to normal. Again, these perception changes happened very quickly (lasting only a second or two) but would happen frequently throughout the day. I did some research on the internet to see if anyone else had experienced something similar but found nothing. Is this an example of a visual hallucination?

  • Which category does America fall in?

In terms of international tourism, countries seem to fall into two categories.

First there are countries that have one large, very famous city (usually also the capital). Examples include France (Paris), United Kingdom (London), Japan (Tokyo).

Second there are countries that have several famous cities, all providing different character to the country as a whole. Examples include Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice), China (Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong), and Spain (Barcelona, Madrid).

As an American myself, I obviously feel that America falls into this second category since I am very familiar with the distinct cultures of its cities: New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Houston, etc.

However, to non-Americans, is the United States primarily known for New York alone. Or when you thing of "America," do other cities come to mind?

  • Do law professors need to be practicing attorneys?

I'm currently on the track to go to law school. I think I want to be a professor of law at a good university, but I'm not really sure if I want to be an attorney, per se. Would that be necessary though?

  • How would a French person pronounce this sentence?

I was writing a French essay in which I wrote the phrase "tout le monde dort," to mean "everyone is sleeping." How would a Frenchman pronounce the word "monde." It sounds more fluid to voice a slight schwa at the end of the word (as in "mond-euh"). Without this added schwa, the final "d" sound runs into the sound of the "d" in "dort" in an unpleasant sounding way. But, how would a French person say it? (And are there any possible regional variations?)

I'm curious about this because I am a French major.

  • What would be a good tattoo for me?

Hello. I'm trying to brainstorm good tattoo ideas for myself. I want one that is representative of the West (California specifically) or finding freedom in the West. I also need to decide the best place on my body for such a tattoo. Please keep in mind that I'm 19, male, and gay. I want the tattoo to be masculine but also easily hidden as I hope to obtain a high-paying job one day that requires several years of college education. So far, I've come up with the outline of California, the word California, the latin word for the West, and a few others. Nothing has really struck me as perfect though. I greatly appreciate any help you can give. Thank you.

  • Is there a reason why zoloft would only seem to work for a day or two?

I've been taking zoloft for about three and a half weeks now to treat social anxiety and depression. My social anxiety has improved tremendously, and for a day or two I was not depressed either. However, my depression came back very quickly. Is there a reason why this would happen? I'm on 100 mg now but I used to take only 50 mg. I drink alcohol and smoke weed sometimes, but I don't see how either of those could affect the way the zoloft works an entire day later. Thank you for your help.
