  • can anyone use large contrasting pan tiles (black on brown) on a neighbours roof?

i have a semi detached house that was built in 1936 of which i fitted a new roof which was completeley in keeping with the original roof ( small brown tile). I have recently had a neighbour who has moved in next door who has decided to fit a new roof which is not in keeping with the original property. He decided to fit large black pan tiles. The problem is that when he had the new roof fitted his roofers removed about 50 of our tiles down the centre line without asking our permission. The neighbour never informed us that he was doing this. As a result our roof looked a mess because we had cuts down our centre line with a different type of tile which were not present before. Also i have had to pay my original roofer to come back and rectify the problem because all the replacement tiles which were put in were not nailed. he has checked the neighbours roof and said that it has been put on completley wrong becaue they have put the felt ontop of the laffs and also there is no felt around the chimney. I have spoken to the council and they have said that as long as the roof serves the pupose of a roof no laws have been broken and it is purley a civil matter. I do not see why i should have had to have paid 4,000 for an new roof to have it cosmetically damaged. does anybody know of any laws that have been broken. please also do not suggest that i speak to my neigbour as all lines of communication have damaged.

  • legalities of roofing?

we had a new roof on our property litlle over 3 years ago. We were very pleased with the result as the roofers did a fantastic job with small redland tiles completely in keepin with our property (30s semi). However our new neighbours have now had a new roof and have decided to have large black pan tiles which not only look out of keeping with the property but have also caused a lift on our own tiles down the centre of the roof. We can accept this however the guys that have done the roofing have done a terible job. they have worked from the hip to the centre instead of the centre of the roof to the hip. as a result we now have cut tiles on our side of the roof which were not present before. also the cut tiles they have used are different from our own. our roofers have been back around and they have checked them and said that they are dangerous because the are not nailed down because there are no laffs there. our roof now looks crap because we have cut tiles different from our own tile down our centre line of the roof. any one know what we can do about this
