2 AnswersYahoo Profiles1 decade agoCan Christ's message - our human capacity for transformation & power over adversity - ever regain its value?
Jesus FAMOUSLY said that he came that ALL might have abundant life and that it is our faith that makes us whole - ultimately capable of contributing our gifts to the greater good.
He demonstrated again and again: inclusiveness, forgiveness, love of humanity, non-violence, that reality is malleable and the miraculous is possible through purification of faith, and most importantly that salvation/fulfillment of purpose comes through egolessness - giving up ALL of one's defenses and returning to authentic being.
How is it that Jesus' original enlightened view of humanity's potential (as sons of God) has disintegrated into hundred's of proliferating sects with self-proclaimed "representatives" of HIS teachings - preaching eternal damnation and the literal 'end of the world,' (according to an unknown 'John's' melodramatic inarticulate vision) and brought us to a perpetual unforgiving stalemate in the Middle East. Will these few be allowed to turn it into Armagedden based on nonsense?
13 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoCan Islam ever return to Muhammad's original vision for individual commitment/contribution to humanity?
The Islamic Golden Age (mid 8th to 13th C.) was influenced by such Quranic injunctions and hadith as "the ink of scientists is equal to the blood of martyr's" stressing the value of ADVANCING knowledge and individual contribution to Allah (the whole). The resulting outpouring of knowledge from scholars in the fields of science, the arts, literature, philosophy, and engineering technology - both through preserving the world's past body of knowledge and new, unique innovations - CAUSED the European Renaissance & its ideal- individual creativity as a RESPONSIBILITY which still infuses western society today.
In Islam -as in Judaism- there is no higher level of achievement than 'prophet' - WHATEVER unique gifts one receives from God/Allah, they should contribute to the whole through the process of unselfing/internal jihad/altruism. In light of CURRENT tribalism/jihadism, can Muhammad's original vision - uniting warring tribes into a movement for the greater good, EVER be reestablished?
14 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhere will the world's philosophical struggle regarding political liberalism end?
This references Kerry's 'withdrawn' question regarding John Stuart Mill's "moral liberalism." It appears that Mill's versus Locke's "political liberalism" is still being debated today, even though we now know that there is no direct link between commitment to individualism AND any 'inherent' human morality (our ability to prefer higher to lower pleasures) in the case of Mill's position.
He naively believed in the principle of individual 'autonomy' as the highest moral good and that its social realization was possible only in a liberal moral culture ( the idea that people would naturally choose Shakespeare over trash novels if offered both) - as opposed to political liberalism requiring political principle to mediate between different and often incompatible moralities (fairness vis-à-vis different conceptions based on the principle of neutrality). Now we struggle with fundamentalism world-wide, determined to replace political liberalism for the sake of "morality." What next?
2 AnswersPhilosophy1 decade agoDoes America possess the wisdom and the will to rise above this?
Gary Wills asked "Where else do we find fundamentalist zeal, a rage at secularity, religious intolerance, fear of and hatred for modernity?" He answered, "We find it in the Muslim World and Al Qaeda."
