  • I want to make a rug out of felt, how durable will it be?

I want to make a rug, where I take a basic rug (dark green) and then sew cut out leaf shapes to it made out of felt. I like the idea of felt because it does not have to be hemmed. I was thinking the leaves would be mostly attached, but have some loose places for texture, and they'd be very densely placed, so you couldn't see the underlying rug.

How feasible to do this project? I want to have this rug beside my bed, so it wouldn't be in a REALLY high traffic area, but it would still get walked on so it would need to be a little durable. How durable is felt? Will it fall apart if I use it like this? If it's not durable enough for this then what would be? Something that wouldn't need to be hemmed.

Also, I was considering doing something similar for a bath mat, only doing waves. I don't think the felt would hold up to getting wet though, would it? Not sure. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Setting up a TV to receive broadcast, help?

I recently moved into an apartment with a bunch of roommates (college) from my parents house and apparently their TV isn't set up for anything other than watching DVDs. I am trying to figure out what I need to receive broadcast (because I'm not going to spend the $ to download the TV show I watch, and the TV station doesn't stream it for like a week after it airs, plus it would be nice to be able to watch the news once in a while) and I need a little help.

I am not sure how old the TV is, but I am assuming it is old enough that it isn't set up internally for digital. Not positive though. I'm at work right now (we don't have internet at home yet either) so I don't have the model number.

Basically, if its NOT set up for digital internally then what do I need to set it up? Some sort of converter right? and do I also need rabbit ears for that or is the antenna somehow included in the converter?

Also, if I need an antenna how do I know which kind I need? I know there are rabbit ears, and then I've seen antennas on the tops of houses. I live in a 3rd floor apartment, I don't think they'd let me put a huge antenna on the side of the building, even if my roommates would be ok with it.

    What are your thoughts?

  • How to be less friendly and more mysterious?

This is a follow up to a question that I've seen asked here a lot. How to stop always being the best friend and start being the girlfriend.

Most answers I see are along the lines of "don't be so openly friendly", "don't be too helpful", "be mysterious", and of course things like touch your hair a lot and touch his arm etc.

I am the first to admit, I am a super friendly person. I think I can make friends with people on the elevator, I'm not shy at all. So if being too friendly gives off the "friend" vibe and not the "date me" vibe, then if I want a date I have to tone it down, right? I know people are going to tell me I should just be myself, and I agree. Ideally I should just be myself. But right now I'm 28 and being myself ends up with me watching a lot of football with guy friends, while they tell me all about their issues with the girls they're dating during commercials. Being myself ends up with me hearing the words "I need a woman's perspective" far too often.

Now, I have to admit, I am not a supermodel. I am a slightly bigger girl (size 14 isn't huge, but it's not size 4 either). And I used to think this was the issue, but I look around and I see so many girls who are bigger than me, some much bigger, with dates and boyfriends. So that can't be it. So then I thought it might be because I'm not girly enough. So I wear makeup, get pedicures, fix my hair, wear nice clothes. And still, I am just a more high maintenance best friend, instead of a girl friend.

Now I should clarify one more thing. I am not desparate for dates. I have friends who give off a desparate vibe, the vibe that says "my biological clock is ticking and every guy I see is a potential husband". This is not me at all. I would just like to have someone to go out with every once in a while (read here make out with once in a while as well), I'd like to get to know a guy and not have him ask me how I think he should ask this girl he just met out on a date, where I think he should take her, what do I think he should wear...etc...

So the desparate vibe isn't the issue either. Possibly irritated, but not desparate. If I hear one more guy say "you're so easy to talk to, I love hanging out with you, I wish all girls were as easy to talk to as you are, it would make dating easier". Really? Then why not date me? :-) Thats logical, right?

Anyways, anyone have any suggestions on how to be less friendly, more mysterious and more flirty? All without being UN-friendly, confusing and um...too out there with the flirting. Anything is appreciated. Thanks!

  • Question about inverse functions?

I am having an issue with verifying inverse functions. Here is an example of how it should work from my textbook -

Show that each function is the inverse of the other:

    f(x) = 3x+2 and g(x)=(x-2)/3

Sorry, I couldn't figure out how to make a fraction on here, but the x-2 is over the 3.

So then you substitute g(x) for every x in the f(x) equation -

    f(g(x)) = 3((x-2)/3) + 2

    = x-2+2=x

That one I understand, the 3 you are multiplying g(x) by cancels out the 3 in the denominator. But then in the homework I am given this problem -

    f(x)=4x-6 and g(x)=(x+4)/6

Ok, so I do what the example in the book did -

f(g(x)) = 4((x+4)/6)-6 - Substitute g(x) for x in f(x). On this one, the 4 you are multiplying g(x) by does not cancel out the 6 in the denominator, so I can't just cross them out like the example. So then I try and simplify.

    = (4x+16)/6 - 6 - Multiply the parenthesis by the 4

    = (2x + 8)/3 - 6

But when I enter that answer into my online homework it tells me that while the answer is equal to the correct answer, it is not correct. I am assuming I'm not simplifying it enough, so then I do -

    (2x+8)/3 - 18/3

    (2x-10)/3

But that is not correct either. What am I doing wrong? The book is not at all clear. Can anyone help me figure it out? I would appreciate it. Thank you!

  • I want to make my bathroom have a "forest feel", while still being a bathroom.?

We are moving into a new place, and the bathroom is fantastic. The sink, toilet and bathtub are all made out of a marbled black material (totally not what we're used to, but we're going with it).

When you first walk in, to your right is a set of cabinets and drawers that rise to the ceiling, to your left is a door that leads to the bedroom. A couple of steps in and the sink is to your right, there is a countertop between it and the cabinets. Then the toilet is also on your right, and then you get to the bathtub.

The bathtub is huge, it is perfectly circular and probably 2 or 2 1/2 feet deep (haven't actually measured, so might be less). It is also black, as are the walls around it. There's a showerhead on the left wall, and a large window on the center wall made of those Glass bricks. It is square, I would guess 3 feet on a side, but I'm not sure. There is a window ledge, 6 inches wide. Could put plants there, was wondering about candles too.

We are going to paint it a light green color, leaf green so more of a yellow green than a blue green. We call it a "living green" if that helps. Not sure what color the cabinets will be, suggestions are welcome. They are already painted, and we are not looking to refinish them at this time so stripping them down and staining them isn't an option. They have to be painted.

  • My fiance is a citizen of Canada, what do we have to do for him to move to the US before we are married?

Currently, we have only seen each other when one of us flys to visit the other. We would like to live in the same city for a while, and spend more time together before getting married. He has a degree in child psychology, but I don't know if that qualifies as one of the desirable jobs. Especially since he doesn't use it in his current line of work.

He works for a company with locations in both Canada and the US, and he can get a transfer to Dallas (where I am). We are not sure what to do or where to apply and for what. Does he need a green card? A temporary resident card? Apply for dual citizenship?

All the websites we've looked at have been rather confusing. Any help you can give would be appreciated, as the only thought I am having is eloping to Vegas, and I would be sad if I can't have the big wedding. But I'd rather have him here with me instead. Still, if there is some way for him to immigrate without having to move the wedding up that would be great.

  • Math, time, and excel question. ?

I work in an office scheduling appointments. I need to convert units of time that equal 15 minutes into the time worked by each employee. So for instance -

An employee works 307 units of 15 minutes each for the entire month.

    307 x 15 = 4605

    4605 / 60 = 76.75

Now, that means she's worked 76 hours and 45 minutes, right? Because the .75 is out of 100. But is there a formula I can put into excel that will automatically convert the .75 into actual minutes instead of a percentage of an hour?

  • Where can I find some good examples of hand signals used by military scouts or recon?

I'm writing a book, and I need some help on some research. I am looking for a guide to hand signals used by military scouts or recon. I have found some for use with tanks, etc, but not recon people. I may not be using the right terminology, as I am not military myself. Basically, I want hand signals that would be used by advanced scouts in enemy territory. Where they need to move fast, and be quiet.

Preferably ones that can be used with tanks/trucks/whatever or without. Thanks!

  • I am looking for some Tofu ideas.?

I am looking for some ideas on how to cook Tofu. I am a diabetic who is looking to start having meatless days (so I would eat meat the rest of the time). As a diabetic, I requre a certain amount of protein with each snack and meal. I was wondering about using tofu as one of those protein sources. While I like chinese food (the americanized version), I don't have much experience with Japanese, so I am looking for recipes that aren't TOO exotic at first. At the same time, I am wanting to try new things. Any suggestions?

  • Does anyone know where I can get another recycling bin in Rockwall TX? An additional one?

I need to get a second recycling bin, as I recycle so much stuff that my first one fills up too fast. I have searched on the Rockwall website and I can't find any information on how to request a second bin. I was wondering if someone else out there in cyberland would have more luck? Allied Waste handles the waste pickup, but I can't figure out how to talk to them about the bins.

  • If I want to be able to squat with my feet flat on the ground, what stretches should I do?

There are some yoga poses I have seen people do where they squat down with their bums on their ankles, but their feet are flat on the ground. I can't get very far at all without having to go up on the balls of my feet. Any suggestions on how to stretch my ankles/calves/whatever?

  • What do healthy, skinny people do in the evenings?

I am currently changing my "lifestyle" for the better, but I am having trouble figuring out what a healthy person does in the evenings. I was raised to eat dinner, and then watch TV for at least 3 hours, sometimes more than that if we watched the news and Leno. But I am trying to get healthier, and I am thinking that sitting for hours in front of a TV isn't part of a healthy lifestyle. So healthy people, what do you do in the evenings?

And for the record, right now I work out every morning at 5:30 (I know it's crazy early) doing cardio and alternating strength and swimming. I am also walking the dog in the late evenings.

  • Never eaten indian food...?

I have never eaten Indian food, and I am going out tonight with a group of friends to this restaurant -

    http://www.dallasdinesout.com/restrant/a/akbar/din...

I am not really a spicy foods person, I like a bit of spice but not tons. I am also a tad bit worried about some of the flavors. I have never eaten anything made with coconut milk or any of the other things I've seen listed. I am excited to try something new, but I want it to be a good experience too. I'd like to ease into it, you know?

So looking at the menu above, do you have any suggestions? Oh, and I am not a lamb fan, unless it's on a Gyro and it's the thin sliced spiced beef and lamb sausage.

    I'd appreciate your input!

  • Bento Box lunch with American ingredients?

I live in Dallas, and I have been making a ghetto version of bento boxed lunches for a few weeks. I am looking to expand my recipes, as tiny sliced sandwiches and grape tomatoes with assorted veggies is getting a little old. I have taken the concept of bento and made it using food that I am used to. But I am ready to branch out.

I need food that I can either make on a weekend and freeze in individual servings, or that is very easy to make the night before and assemble in the morning. Even suggestions pre-made from the store would work. Since I work full time and go to school full time, I do not have as much time to devote to this as I would wish. But I have found that since I have been making bento I haven't seen the inside of a McDonalds in weeks!! My waistline and my pocketbook appreciate this.

I am not really a fish person, unless you count salmon. I am trying to use as many veggies as possible. I am open to foods from any culture, as long as I can fit them in the box!

  • Does anyone else think it's odd that Japan is upset that the US did not sign the Kyoto treaty and yet they...

continue their "research" by hunting whales? They admit (according to the Yahoo news story), that the meat ends up on the menu, but they still call it "research".

Why are they so adamant about air pollution, yet they refuse to follow other environmental laws?

I mean, I am VERY environmentally conscious, I am just confused at their double standards. They can say "it's part of our culture" but that is an excuse the US can use when it comes to air pollution. The car/suv is part of our culture. We can't be expected to change something like that!!

Does that seem silly to any of you??

  • What is the name of that thing where you run around a city and jump and do flips and climb up walls?

I have seen it on youtube, but I can't remember what it's called, and I want to pull it up to show someone.

These people can climb up walls, and jump from one building to another. They jumb off balconies from one to another.

    I just can't remember what it's called..there's a name for it.

  • Can someone talk in simple terms about the theory of Relativity?

A friend of mine is a physics professor, and he challenged me to research the theory of relativity. I have never had any physics, but I have a pretty good head for math, I just have no background in physics at all. So can someone talk in general terms about this theory? Why is it important, how does it work, just some basic background so I have a foundation to go on. I want to understand enough to ask intelligent questions, and he can explain the more complicated aspects.

And if you have suggestions for websites that would be helpful I would appreciate it.

    Thanks!

  • Where should we go on vacation?

My parents want to take us on a vacation - there are 4 of us (dad - 55, mom - 54, me (female) - 25, my brother - 21. We live in the Dallas, TX area.

We aren't looking for "the vacation of a lifetime" or anything, mainly just to relax, have fun, and be together.

Comparable vacations (in terms of cost and distance) we've taken in the past are - a week at an all inclusive resort in Cancun, a week in Estes Park Colorado (Rocky Mountain national park), a week in a rental house in the Texas Hill country, a week in a beachfront hotel in South Padre, that kind of thing.

The problem is this - some of us DON't like beaches where the water isn't clear (murky water...uugghhh), Colorado is too far to drive, and we want something different than the Hill country. We want somewhere there are things to do, yet you can just hang out too.

Oh and we want to go in August.

One more thing, we really aren't interested in a cruise. We get along, but not well enough to share a cabin. THANKS!!
