What is it like to drive in Los Angeles, especially for an inexperienced driver who just got her license?
The question pretty much says it all. I just got my license in San Jose, CA..but my job is in LA and according to the job description, I will be driving to stores all over LA and Orange County. Can anyone give me an honest opinion, without exaggerations if possible? Tell me about freeways speeds, road rage, aggressiveness of drivers, how confusing multiple lanes and exits on the freeway can be etc etc. If it seems too dangerous, I might change my mind about that job. I don't want to risk my life.
4 AnswersSafety9 years agoCompany assumed I had a driver's license before they gave me a job, but I don't...?
I'm a senior in chemical engineering at a good university, but the job market being what it is, it was difficult for me to get interviews, let alone a job offer. I finally managed it though, with a very good company.
They said on their application that a driver's license for the applicant was a must. I didn't actually apply for that job position- I had applied for another one, and through some connections in their HR, they considered me for this job (with driving being a must). However they assumed that I had a driver's license. They never asked me if I actually did. I let them believe that, because I thought that I still had some time before I graduate, in which to get my driver's license.
So, I got the job offer. My next task was to get that driver's license. I got my learners permit- no problem. Now, I've tried calling the one and only driving school in my town (it's a small town) and they are being very rude, saying that they only give private driving classes for one hour, once a week. That is way too less for me. I have about 5 weeks before graduation. I cannot (and do not) want to rely on my friends because they are also very busy and have their own schedules. I don't want to burden anyone.
Now, I'm getting scared that I won't get my driver's license on time and that I might need to confess it to the company. I don't know what they will do?! Will they revoke my job? Driving is an important part of the job- the new graduate trainees have to drive from store to store to see how the company's brands are selling etc. Can an HR person out there explain to me what the HR of this company is likely to do? I really really don't want to lose this job! It was so difficult for me to even get this one!
Please help!
3 AnswersCorporations9 years agobad reference from previous employer...?
I am currently a senior at university. This past summer, I interned with a consumer products company and things went really well in the beginning of the internship. My mid term evaluation was excellent and I got an 'exceeds expectations' grade. Towards the end however, my relation with my boss got a little strained when she began to expect results out of me, but I couldn't deliver because either the solutions I wanted to implement required too much money that they wouldn't give a mere intern or because there were no immediate solutions to some problems. There was one really good cost savings I was able to make to the company but for some strange reason, my boss didn't like it (even though other managers at the plant did).
In any case, my boss gave me a bad evaluation. She did say some good things about me, such as I am diligent and hard working and technically sound. But then she said I had trouble prioritizing and got frustrated easily. These two claims were not true at all- in fact she said the exact opposite during my mid term evaluation so how her opinion of me could change within 5 weeks really boggles my mind. Anyway, they didn't offer me a job based on that final evaluation and now I'm back in my senior year, studying and applying for jobs on the side.
I'm really scared however that any new companies that are searching for a reference on me are going to contact that old company and get the final evaluation emailed to them by the HR reps and then they are going to reconsider giving me a job. On the other hand, I don't want to remove my only internship experience from my resume because that section actually makes my resume more competitive and attractive. What do I do? Do HR reps of big companies (my old company is huge in the world) just pass on evaluations to new employers like that? Can I call them and ask them if they are doing that and then tell them to stop? I don't want my entire career to be screwed up just because of one internship......this is really worrying me. HELP!
4 AnswersLaw & Legal10 years agoI'm not happy with my curly perm- I never imagined curly hair would look like this on me!?
Now I want to get my hair straightened chemically again, but I am sooo scared as to the damaging effects on my hair. Arrghh *frustration!* I even paid the hair salon about $122 for a curly perm I don't like! I was so upset with the horrible curly mess they had spent 2 hours doing on me that I cried and am having image problems. This is so damn frustrating. Will the damaging effects on my hair be really really bad (considering I'll be getting 2 perms in about 5 days?). Also, what's the worst that could happen and what are the chances of it happening?
2 AnswersHair1 decade agoBlack Label Whiskey kept in wardrobe for 6 years...is it still safe to drink?
My dad has this huge bottle of Black Label Whiskey that he kept in his wardrobe for 6 years and never touched. This wardrobe is in India and the temperature in the summer can go up to 45 degrees celsius. Inside a wardrobe, stuffed among woollen winter clothes, I'm guessing the temperature could have gone as high as 50 degrees celsius (for safety's sake, I'm assuming a large margin of increase in temperature...bear with me). He's finally taken the bottle out and is considering opening it for a large party we're holding in a few days...but I'm not sure he should. I don't really know if it is still ethanol or whether it has decomposed to something else. I have studied chemistry and do know however, that ethanol will only decompose into another compounds when heated to high temperatures and with a certain catalyst available like alumina. Is there any household test that I could use to find out if it really is just ethanol and not something more poisonous? Or is it safe to say that ethanol heated to just 50 degrees celsius is still just ethanol?
3 AnswersChemistry1 decade agoIf a couple have just broken up but, for various circumstances, have not been able to distance themselves...?
is it normal for them to feel worse and go through cycles of getting angry at each other and loving each other? is it also forgivable if they get tempted and make out just to give each other comfort and some relief from the loneliness?
This has sort of been my story but I feel really guilty for making out with my ex- it felt really good at the time and was very comforting to be close to him after so long...but it just hurts a bit more now because I miss that kind of intimacy with him... I guess I'm looking for some kind of reassurance and maybe some similar stories from you.
No stupid/rude answers please.
1 AnswerSingles & Dating1 decade agoIs it strange to 'work on mending a relationship' rather than just giving up?
I am a rising junior in an ivy league college, doing a major in chemical engineering. i met my boyfriend about 3 days after joining this college in freshmen year- he is now double majoring in engineering physics and computer science. Our relationship has been great so far but has lately been suffering strains. My theory on them is that we are both pretty stressed out all the time. he takes upward of 20 credits and research every semester, i take about 16-17 credits without research. I feel like we argue over little things because of stress...because sometimes, a not-very-good thing happened in our day and then when we come back home to study, we have no time to de-stress and tell each other our problems or just cuddle for a while. the only time we get together is on friday afternoons.
sometimes, our relationship feels like pure bliss. like i want to spend every moment of my life with him. sometimes, however, i just feel so confused about the direction this relationship is taking. we broke up about a week back because we felt it wasn't working despite some efforts we made- but then i asked for him to come back the very next day and he agreed. we really don't want to be apart...we do love each other....but it seems strange because we're trying to 'mend' this relationship and trying harder to make it work. and honestly, it's not all that much effort- just a matter of giving each other some space sometimes..he admitted himself that he needs to learn how to juggle his work, his social life, and me... however, i need some reassurance...are there any other couples out there who are also trying to work it out because you love each other....or do you just dump someone and move on? is there any such thing as the 'perfect man' or 'perfect woman' who you love and life is all rainbows and butterflies? or is it normal to work with someone to reach a stage of security and happiness with each other?
3 AnswersSingles & Dating1 decade agoquestion about my digital camera?
I have been appointed the camera-woman for a certain occasion for my sister's wedding. I'm planning to use our digital camera and have already uploaded all the old pictures from it to the computer and then deleted them on the camera so I have more memory on the 1 GB card available for the event tomorrow. However, even though I've deleted all the pictures from the memory, the camera still says that only 50% of the memory card is available for storing pictures. I keep going back to the memory to see if I can access any more photos and delete them..but the memory says there are no more photos. What is taking up the other 50% of the memory card then?

5 AnswersSingles & Dating1 decade agohow do you deal with stress in your relationship?
My boyfriend and I have been together for about a year and 4 months now. We're both in college and live close to each other. We've always had arguments but all have been small or not very consequential. However, lately, we've been pretty stressed out with homework and deadlines and staying up late and not getting enough sleep...so we tend to release our stress on each other by fighting or arguing about absolutely stupid things which feel very important at the time....we don't know how to stop doing that..its upsetting our relationship and has also nearly led to a breakup twice. we love each other and admittedly, do have some genuine problems but we've managed to fix some of them because we love each other. how do you we deal with this stress though? how do you guys deal with stress? any ideas? (and no sex please, we have planned not to do it until and if we get married)
6 AnswersSingles & Dating1 decade agoInexplicable pain in lower back?
I have this pain in my tailbone for the past 2-3 days and it hurts quite a bit when I sit down so I need to take care when sitting down. Also, I feel like that pain has something to do with this pretty much constant feeling of nausea I've been feeling for a while. I don't think I've been sitting down harshly so I don't think I knocked my tailbone. Also, I've felt there and can't feel a pimple forming but the tailbone is kind sore. What's going on?
No silly answers please. I've had enough of those. If you have something serious to offer, then please do.
7 AnswersPain & Pain Management1 decade agohow do I remove the bloodhound.boot virus off of my computer?
I've been getting these reports from Symantec saying that I have a bloodhound.boot virus on my computer and that its location is unknown, which makes it all the more suspicious because my logic is that since the computer found the virus, it should know where it found it!
The computer guys in my college say that the only thing i can do is to reinstall my operating system. is this really necessary? Whenever I run a full system scan on my computer using Symantec, it doesn't find anything. The computer guys told me to run a whole system scan on 'safe mode' but that didn't work either. the antivirus found nothing.

4 AnswersSecurity1 decade agoI'm 19. Can breasts at this age lose their shape because of vigorous squeezing during making-out?
My boyfriend and I have been making out a little more than usual lately. We don't do this normally. He has been squeezing them pretty hard and doing other things to them as well- all to our pleasure- but at the same time, I'm worried that my breasts may lose their tightness or become saggy at this age and I don't want that to happen? Are my fears justified?

My First Kiss was You
We lay there quiet on your Donlon bed,
No one to disturb us, no one said-
"Ooh! Let's play badminton! Or hang out for a while!"
No, we were all alone. I gave a shy smile.
My hands caressed your chest. T-shirt on of course!
You lay quite quiet- there was no force-
But a well understood silence hung in the air-
We could not kiss, we could not share.
Still, emotions surged through my body and mind..
You gazed at me- your thoughts not too far behind..
We needed a tangible release for our emotions-
My mind went blank of all traditional notions..
My cheek brushed yours, my breath caressed your neck.
All I expected was a nervous peck...
I felt you lean on one shoulder and hesitate-
Did I really mean it? Or would my feelings abate?
You risked it as your lips touched my own-
My breasts rose and sank- I needed to moan...
My lips responded, tried to embrace yours...
Pent up emotions rose up from our cores..!
Your hands found mine, I shyly turned away...
Your face found mine- you wanted me to stay.
You said it was surreal- it *was* beautiful and true...
My heart strings were plucked- my first kiss was you.
Notes- Donlon is the name of his dorm.
