  • Which type of router would be best?

I'm switching from ATT wi fi to Time Warner (cable) internet service. As a result, I need to buy a modem and router (I've read bad things about the devices that combine the two). I've purchased the modem, but now I need to know which router would be the best option for me. My roommate and I both have Apple laptops. Mine is 3 years old and hers is 6 months old. The apartment we live in is 1100 ft sq. I do not yet have Apple TV, but I'm planning to get it. Should I get the newer Apple Express or Apple Extreme? What about the old 'UFO' style Apple Base Station? Or should I just get a cheap non-Apple router? Why? Thank you!

  • What is this used women's hybrid 21-speed Peugot bicycle worth?

I am looking to buy a used women's hybrid bicycle until I save up for my dream bike, but I have no idea what used bikes are worth. With other bikes, I usually find comparable bikes by googling, but it was pretty impossible with the Peugots.

    This is the bike:

  • To all who attended a tea party yesterday - where were you during the last 8 years?

With no fanfare and little notice, the national debt has grown by more than $4 trillion during George W. Bush’s presidency.

It’s the biggest increase under any president in U.S history.

On the day President Bush took office, the national debt stood at $5.727 trillion. The latest number from the Treasury Department shows the national debt now stands at more than $9.849 trillion. That’s a 71.9 percent increase on Mr. Bush’s watch.

The bailout plan now pending in Congress could add hundreds of billions of dollars to the national debt – though President Bush said this morning he expects that over time, “much if not all” of the bailout money “will be paid back.”

But the government is taking no chances. Buried deep in the hundred pages of bailout legislation is a provision that would raise the statutory ceiling on the national debt to $11.315 trillion. It’ll be the 7th time the debt limit has been raised during this administration. In fact it was just two months ago, on July 30, that President Bush signed the Housing and Economic Recovery Act, which contained a provision raising the debt ceiling to $10.615 trillion.

Deputy Press Secretary Tony Fratto declined an invitation to comment on the enormous jump in the national debt during Mr. Bush’s presidency. He referred me to OMB – the Office of Management and Budget, which tried to make the case that as a percentage of the economy, the national debt is not that big.

In its budget documents in February, OMB estimated that next year’s national debt would hit $10.4 trillion – which it said would amount to 69.3 percent of the gross domestic product – the standard measure of the size of the economy.

That’s high – but far from an all-time high. After World War II, the national debt soared to over $270 billion – a quaint figure by today’s standards. Numerically, it’s less than the amount of federal deficit we now run up in a single year. But back in 1946, the Debt amounted to 121.7 percent of the size of the total economy.

By the time Richard Nixon began his second term in 1973, the national debt had grown to $466 billion – though as percentage of GDP, it had fallen to 35.7 percent.

Today, OMB press secretary Corinne Hirsch, renewed the oft-made government argument that reporters should focus on just that part of the national debt that is held by the public – now about $5.6 trillion and not include that portion billed as “intra-governmental holdings” – money the government owes itself – especially the Social Security and Medicare trust funds.

Of course, the government doesn’t have that money either. It’s been spent.

President Bush made that point himself on April 5, 2005, when he paid a visit to the offices of the Bureau of the Public Debt in Parkersburg, W.Va.

He was shown a white file cabinet with keypad locks on each of its four drawers in which the Social Security Trust Fund is stored. On that day, there was no cash – as he noted in a speech later in the day.

“There is no 'trust fund,' just IOUs that I saw firsthand, that future generations will pay – will pay for either in higher taxes, or reduced benefits, or cuts to other critical government programs,” he told an audience at West Virginia University.

The government didn’t have the money it owed itself back then – and still doesn’t.

A couple of weeks after he took office, President Bush addressed the Republican Congressional Retreat in Williamsburg and declared that his budget “pays down the national debt.”

In recent years, President Bush almost never mentions the national debt.

  • How did undocumented immigrants save social security?

In the fine print of the 2008 annual report on Social Security, released last week, the program's trustees noted that growing numbers of "other than legal" workers are expected to bolster the program over the coming decades.

One reason is that many undocumented workers pay taxes during their work lives but don't collect benefits later.

The result is a substantial increase in the number of working-age people paying taxes, but a relatively smaller increase in the number of retirees who receive benefits - a double boon to Social Security's bottom line.

  • Tell me a joke that's better than this one and I'll give you 10 points?

    Computer Diagnosis

One day Bill complained to his friend, “My elbow really hurts; I guess I should see a doctor.”

His friend offered, “Don’t do that. There’s a computer at the drug store that can diagnose anything quicker and cheaper than a doctor. Simply put in a sample of your urine and the computer will diagnose your problem and tell you what you can do about it. It only costs $10.”

Bill figured he had nothing to lose, so he filled a jar with a urine sample and went to the drug store. Finding the computer, he poured in the sample and deposited the $10. The computer started making some noise and various lights started flashing. After a brief pause out popped a small slip of paper on which was printed: You have tennis elbow. Soak your arm in warm water. Avoid heavy lifting. It will be better in two weeks.

Late that evening while thinking how amazing this new technology was and how it would change medical science forever, he began to wonder if this machine could be fooled.

  • If you are creative and artistic, I need your help?

There is a parade which next year will have as its theme 'Hats Off to Entertaiment' and I am on a committee for an organ donation agency that has a float in this parade.

In the past the themes have always lent themselves to finding a way to tell the story of organ donation in a very compelling and tasteful way...all covered in floral or natural materials.

How would you tie this year's theme to our organization's mission, and at the same time keep in mind that we always want to acknowledge the real heroes that are organ donors and the transformation of life that happens to a transplant recipient.

If we go the obvious 'celebrity' route, some people's misconception that celebrities or rich people get moved to the top of the waiting list might be wrongly reinforced.

Keep in mind that this is a celebratory type of parade, and it is about 5 miles long.

Please give me some of your creative visions - and you might just see them come to fruition next January 1st.

  • I've grown and changed since I got dumped, and I want to apologize and be friends with him again.?

A year ago, I dated J. a couple of months. We had fun, and he took me on the most romantic date of my life. We never slept together. I was in college, and very unstable (I lived in four places during the time we dated); he's VERY stable and I think it freaked him out. Plus, being so unstable, I was desperate to hang on to him b/c he was a pillar of strength...desperation is not a good quality in someone you're dating. I left on a 2 month trip (we emailed). When I came back, he invited me out one night, but the next day called me and said things weren't going to work out. He wanted to be friends and I said no. He had always been 'scared of commitment' b/c he had been hurt in a previous relationship, and he wasn't sure he was going to remain living in CA, and didn't want to get attached to someone here. I am now working in my dream job, have my own apt., happy with my life, and think I'd like to date him again. I miss him.Should I acknowledge I was wrong and ask to be friends again?

  • I need a two piece skirt suit for an interview. I'd like something modern with a fitted jacket?

My favorite places to shop are thrift stores, Banana Republic, French Connection, Zara, Anthropologie, Club Monaco and Urban Outfitters.

I've looked everywhere, and can't find something professional enough but also stylish and modern. Macy's didn't have any two-piece skirt suits that anyone but my grandma would wear.

I live in Santa Monica, and have the interview in downtown at 2 pm. Please let me know if you've seen any cute skirt suits. I'm willing to spend about $300.
