  • Tax question on house buying / selling.?

My wife and her ex husband sold their marital home a few years ago. By then she was living with me at a different address. Amicably they divided the money left over after the mortgage was paid off, and solicitors bills, etc.

    1) Should my wife have paid tax on her half, as she wasn't living there when it was sold. (Hadn't lived there for about 4 years, but ex husband had lived there. (They had not at this point divorced.)

The money she received she used to buy a property as a 'buy to let'. For various reasons (mainly financial) the work needed to get it to a livable condition never got finished. Last year it got broken into and vandalised, and my wife sold it making a very substantial loss (about 75% of what she paid.)

    2) She had to pay tax on what she got from the sale, but could that have been offset against the loss?

    Thanks.

  • Campervan around New Zealand?

My wife and I plan on spending a month going around New Zealand in Oct/Nov 2013. Our present plan is to work our way clockwise from the top of North Island (Auckland), hiring a campervan after a night in a hotel to adjust body clocks.

Has anyone experience of this, recommendations for hire companies, places to be sure to see, etc.

    All help will be appreciated.

  • I can't see my screen?

My Compaq Evo N1015v has stopped lighting up the screen.

I'm able to read this now purely because the sun is shining on the screen and lighting it up.

It started with the screen going dark when it was at 90% to the keyboard, then it got to 80, 70, until a couple of days ago it stopped lighting totally.

I'm assuming that my laptop is dying, because my keyboard is also playing up where the strip from r-y. f-h, and v-n, will freeze every so often, even in the middle of a sentence..

Someone said that the screen darkness is easy too fix, but I can't find out how to do it. Any suggestions?

  • How can I turn my keyboard off?

My keyboard on my laptop sticks, so I've plugged in a usb keyboard, but my laptop "down" button is causing my screen to ride up. I want to disconnect my keyboard on the laptop.

  • changing XP language?

I've been offered a French laptop which doesn't have a Qwerty keyboard, but is running Windows XP.

If I change the operating language to English (someone told me that's quite simple), will the keyboard then reset itself to Qwerty and I'll just need to move keys or stick new letters on?

  • Seperate rooms for accompanied children.?

I'm going to visit my 3 daughters in the New Year, and am possibly taking them away for a couple of days. Nowhere fancy, just somewhere different from home.

My problem is that they are now of an age where they don't want to sleep in the same room as me, but places like Travelodge won't allow two room bookings if one of them is going to be children only. (Eldest child is 13.)

Anybody have any suggestions? I'm thinking of somewhere like Blackpool, they live in Manchester and we'd be travelling by train.

  • Gaia online: Is anybody else having problems scrolling?

Yesterday it was jumping a little, but today it boots up and I can go to the different sections, but can't scroll up or down. There's no 'up-down' bar on the right, and the arrow buttons on the keyboard aren't affecting it.

    Other sites are fine.

  • Does anybody know a site for 'reviewing' local businesses?

    Sorry, someone rather than somewhat.

And if I had long enough ladders I would do it myself.

  • Renovating Art Deco cocktail cabinet, dining table and chairs?

I have a 1930's utility Art Deco cocktail cabinet in need of TLC.

Oak veneer (and other woods), it needs cleaning, nourishing, and dirt removal.

How do I go about repairing where the veneer is lifting ( its not too bad, just a couple of spots)

The table in itself is not in a bad condition, just the odd scratch that advice would help with.

The chairs unfortunately are in a bit of a sorry state, the glue seems to have gone in the joints, and whilst they are solid enough when they're positioned correctly the moment they get moved the joints drop out.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

    Thanks.

  • "New Hardware Found (VGA compatable)"?

I recently went through my startup menu and got rid of all the stuff that was slowing it down (old printer links, anti-virus I no longer use, etc) and its speeded my start up no end... BUT

I now have an icon that looks like a crab claw appear in my screens bottom right corner (where the messenger icon and time are) and a message says "New hardware found (VGA compatable" and after a few seconds a big box appears for installation. (You know the sort of thing.... "if you have a disc insert it now"...).

I've googled the message, got a Microsoft page that might as well have been in Swahili for all the help it gave, now I want to know if anyone can explain it in simple English please?

(Whilst I can get pages up for the net, they are running slowly, sometimes they freeze and slowly refresh.)

  • Psychoville last night?

Did anyone else notice the entire show (apart from the opening exterior shot) was one continuous shot?

I kept waiting for a cut, but it wasn't noticeable if there was one (unless it was when she went into the kitchen.)

    Well done guys, brilliant.

  • Cheques in U.S. dollars posted to UK. Best way to exchange them?

I'm hoping shortly to be receiving several cheques from America, all for over $100, and all in U.S. dollars.

If I open an account with a British bank and pay them in, they are going to charge me a fee to convert them to UK pounds.

Can a UK citizen open an account with an American bank and pay the cheques in by mail (registered delivery)?

Could they then transfer the money from their 'American' account to a UK account in a lump sum so that only one charge is made for conversion?

Any help would be appreciated as some of this money is being donated to a UK charity.

  • I'll give money to charity for everyone joining my website. Best way to advertise?

I have a nudist website (naturallynaked.co.uk) run by a large company who pay me for everyone who joins.

I'm offering to pay money to my companies charity, Railway Children, for everyone that joins up before the end of March.

Its literally a case of filling in your details and then replying to the email confirming your email address. After that you can either use it or forget it.

So how best do I advertise it to get maximum members?

  • How do we add words to Yahoo Answers dictionary?

I've just put a couple of answers on the London section of UK travel, and got told I'd mis-spelt Heathrow, prebooked, travelodge, and several other words.

On spell check on my work computer it offers me the option to add the word I've mis-spelt to the dictionary so it won't come up again next time.

Is there anyway of doing that on here?

  • Maybe a really strange question, but do you remain seated or stand up to wipe yourself after using the toilet?

Following on a conversation with my wife and stepchildren it seems I'm the only person in the house who stands up to wipe myself after going to the toilet.

They're claiming its because I'm Northern (and therefore weird by default), I'm claiming they are the weird ones because they do it seated.

Anybody care to comment, even if its only to say the whole subject is weird?

  • How can i change what starts automatically?

When i switch my laptop on it takes about 5 minutes before I can use it, I know its my fault, because I get things coming up like MSN messenger or Vizumi which I use but don't want automatically.

I was shown a trick using the 'run' option where I could see and alter the initial start up menu, but if you knock MSN off and then actually use it at some point it reappears on booting up again.

    Anyone any hints please?

  • Any ladies in America want to help?

Okay, this is going to sound strange but if you look at my last question it might make sense.

I have been looking at the Walmart web site for large bra's for my wife (and when my stepdaughter heard about them she wanted some too.)

They are so much cheaper than they are here in England, despite the fact that Walmart owns ASDA, and come in the large sizes my ladies need.

    So, what I'm asking is:

If I ordered and paid for a couple of bra's each, is there anyone who would be prepared to collect them from their local Walmart, find out the postage, (I'll pay them that by paypal(?),) and then they post them on.

Alternatively, if you don't want to involve paypal, I could maybe order something for you at the same time to the approx. postage value, and you just keep that.

OR if you want something from England I'll swap you postage on that.

If more than one person offers I thank you all in advance.

  • Large bra's at reasonable prices?

My bbw wife wants some new bra's.

    She's 46d.

They seem so expensive when I find them online.

Can anyone suggest a store, other than Evans, where we can get her just some normal, everyday, bra's?

    Thanks.

  • Corrupt profile?

Yesterday morning I turned my laptop on, no problems except the usual one with AVG free saying I needed to reboot to be covered.

I did my normal checks of emails etc, and turned the machine off.

When I next rebooted I'd lost my wallpaper, msn was my homepage instead of google, and quite a few desktop items were gone as well as history and favourites.

Booting up now there was a message about a corrupt profile? And everything was blank again.

Anyone got any ideas? Do I need to create a new profile, and if so, how?

Thanks in advance for the help.
