  • How can I grant full access to all files to an account under Windows 7?

I just upgraded to Windows 7, and I don't have access to a lot of my files that I used to have (on an external drive). My account has administrator privileges. What is the easiest way to grant full access to all files? Change the access permissions the account has (if so, how?) or add permission for the account to each file (if so, what's the easiest way?). Thanks

  • Simple way to write arbitrary text to results window in Applescript?

I want to do a little logging with free text (not just the return data) and write it to a window - not pop up a dialog with every line. For instance, write a line to the results window (or some other AppleScript editor window, like the events log). I've been looking around but haven't really found anything yet.

  • On a Mac G4 (Power PC, the white semi-hemi one) how do you open it up?

I have one of the semi-hemisphere white machines with flatscreen - a powermac 6.1. I got memory to add to it, but how do you open the damned thing? I understand it goes in the bottom, but I've never seen screws like that.

  • '78 MG B was running fine, but now stalls on low gas flow.?

I have a '78 MGB with a rebult engine with 5000 or so miles on it. High-performance engine. Last year it stopped being able to "catch' when started. We fixed it this summer by replacing the points and condensers. While we were at it I replaced the fuel filter and coil.

Fuel filter: Less than 100 miles on it

    40v Coil: same

Starter: Less than 2500 mile on it.

Points and condensors: Less than 100 miles on them

It has a manual choke too (pre-dates the recent work)

It was running perfectly since we redid the points and condensors. Put on less than 100 miles. Then I had to go away for two weeks. When I returned (Friday) I took it out for a ride (it had been garaged).

I had trouble starting it - it would catch, but immediately die. Four or five times, ultimately revving it high to get it to stay. It can be driven, but it seems gas starved at lower speeds, and can stall out until it's constantly revved.

    Any ideas?

  • What is the tax penalty for this kind of late tax?

Our property taxes have their semi-annual due date on July 1st. The payment will be $3800. I'm waiting on a refund on a state tax, so it would be good if we could stretch the payment out for a bit - say 30 days late.

Our town charges late taxes at 12% per annum. I suspect that 30 days @ 12% for $3800 won't be too much - maybe $50 tops - but am having trouble doing the calculation to prove it. I guess what I want to do is calculate a loan of $3800 for 30 days at 12% interest. Is that correct? What would the formula be, and/or - even better - just how much would a delay like that cost for a month?

    Thanks

  • How to properly spark test a '78 MGB?

I have a 1978 MGB that's not catching when it fires. There is fuel making it at least to the carbs. It died on the road when stopped at a stop sign (could never be restarted). It has a high-performance engine and a 40kv coil. I'm not that much of a mechanic but I'm trying to learn.

There are carbs, I thought it had electronic ignition but I'm not 100% sure. I'm pretty sure the problem is electrical.

I have an OEM adjustable ignition spark tester but I'm not totally sure how to proceed using it. Any help out there?

  • Supposedly not pregnant (according to test) but no cycle either?

My wife is 40 and we've been trying to conceive and have been taking Clomid (well, she has...). We're at day 36 - under the Clomid she moved from 28 day cycles to about 31 (not unusual), but so far, no cycle, but the p-tests come up negative too. Going in for a more formal blood test, but how common is it for the OTC (over the counter) p-tests to not pick it up at this point?

  • How can I set up a Linksys WRT54G as an access point?

Caveat: I AM a software engineer but I am NOT a network engineer. Most of this stuff is tangential to what I normally do. Technical talk doesn't intimidate me, but don't assume I automatically know what to do (if I did, I wouldn't be posting here!)

Okay, this configuration has a WEP-protected LinkSys WRT54GS broadcasting. I have a Mac that needs to hook up, and since it is too expensive to get it a wireless adapter (not only do I have to buy the adapter, but I have to upgrade the O/S as well) I've bought another WRT54G to use as an access point.

I *know* this can be done, because a couple of years ago I configured a WRT54G as an access point at my son's school. Unfortunately, I don't remember the magic involved.

The main router/wireless/DHCP server is 192.68.10.200. Note the 10 subnet. I've configured the one I want to use as an access point as 192.68.10.210, and disabled it as a DHCP server (I don't mind if the Mac has a fixed internal IP), but I'm at a loss as to what else.?

  • What the heck is a 1099-G? Any CPAs out there?

I live in one state, and work in another. That state just sent me a 1099-G for about $800-something bucks for 2007. I've run corporations and filed corporate taxes (not in 2007) and been a private contractor (not in 2007) and a regular employee and have never seen a 1099-G. What's it mean, and what do I do with it? 1099-MISC, 1099-DIV - those are all familiar. 1099-G...??

  • What is the best vacuum cleaner for getting up dog hair?

We have 5 dogs, and some carpeted areas. We have spent more money on vacuums than I care to admit. Oddly enough, the best one is this 15+ year old Eureka canister vacuum that we still have.

What have you found the best vacuum cleaner for pet hair to be? I don't really want to spend $600 on a Kirby, but I'm open to spending something as long as I get a machine that really, uh, sucks.

  • Visual Studio 2005 vs 2008 and .NET Framework question?

I'm moving from Visual Studio 6 to something with .NET. I noticed 2008 is out, but the price (on PC Connection) isn't much different than that of 2005. Is it just minor incremental changes? Any reason not to go with 2008? I work in C/C++, Java, and VB.

Second, it uses .NET framework 3.5. Is that pre-installed on XP? I have it on my system, but as a developer I really don't recall if I downloaded it for something or it came with XP Pro. I'd be looking to write consumer apps and don't necessarily want them to have to download some large framework to run the executable or an app/control in the browser. Is anything .NET pre-installed on XP (and now Vista).

    Thanks in advance

  • If you have low-grade (mild, pain-minimal) pancreatitis can it ever go away, if you do the right things?

Meaning, zero alcohol, eat lots of little things throughout the day (instead of big meals), keep fats to a minimum. I know you can keep the enzyme action from eating the pancreas, but can you ever restore the enzyme action to normal?

  • What do you think is the best dog breed?

I've had a lot of dogs - used to breed, actually - and have had everything from Icelandic Sheepdogs to German Shepherds to Tibetan Spaniels to Border Collies, etc.

I honestly have to say the best one's I've had - in terms of just "living a peaceful life" have got to be a Shih Tzu and Golden Retrievers, and if I had to pick between the two, I think I'd actually go for the Shih Tzu.

We currently have five dogs, including a hound mix. We love him so much, but he's really a pain to manage. The Rottweiller/Shepherd mix is probably the best dog (he's a "dog's dog", but he's very intimidating to strangers. Overall, as stupid as it seems, I think I like the Shih Tzu best.

I have had a Golden, and would go for that too. I also used to have a scottish sheepdog, but it was a car chaser (and a car caught him) - lots others too. They all have their bright spots, but for overall compatability, I'm saying Shih Tzu, or maybe Golden R.

  • Sulfur smell in garage and near the garage?

I have a house, in northern New England, heated with oil (not gas), with a garage, and the garage has a strong smell of sulfur, as does the first floor bathroom (to the left of the garage) and the master bedroom (above the garage). It is strongest in the garage itself though.

The garage houses a little bit of gasoline, a little bit of LP for a gas grill or whatever, and an MG, but nothing that has traditionally given off a sulfur smell. I thought maybe it was a dead animal or something at first, but it'd have to be a zebra to still be putting out this level of odor.

I'm not sure it's the water, because then ALL bathrooms should have the odor, right? What can be driving this?

  • Programmable thermostat question?

I have a Honeywell RTH7000 thermostat. It replaces an older circular mercury thermostat. There are only two wires, red and white. They are low voltage - you can put them together with your bare hands and not get electrocuted, and put the heat on.

We have a three-zone hot water (from an oil burner) system. The other two zones still have the older round mercury thermostats.

Although this programmable one was installed a year ago, it seems to be not working now. It's not the batteries - they are fairly fresh, but I'm wondering if it's wired up properly. We haven't lived in this house very long.

Right now, the red wire goes to the "R" connector, and the white goes to the "G" connector, but it doesn't seem to kick in when it should.

The directions have connection instructions for "conventional" and "alternative" and "heat pump". I'm pretty sure this falls under "conventional". I'm not sure what the industry definition of "heat pump" is.

Should I wire it as "heat pump"?

  • How old can a Zebra Finch be and still breed?

I have a Zebra Finch hen who lost her mate (due to a tumor); we added a younger male finch after a while.... from their noises (mainly his) I think they're trying to mate.

She is at least six years old. She's in great health, but is that too old to breed?

  • What kind of special light shows up blood and do you know if there are cheap versions of it?

I know this sounds weird, but don't report me to the police. I have a pet that uses a litter box, and we suspect she has blood in her urine, but trying to get a urine sample is probably impossible, unless we put her in a roasting pan. I know there are lights - not black lights, I don't think, maybe a variation of ultraviolet - that will make blood show up (glow). I was thinking this might be a simple way of seeing if she is excreting blood, but I don't know what wavelength will do it.
