Doing this problem, I got

4x^18

-9y^10

The book said it the 9 should be positive, but unless i'm mistaken, -3^-2=1/-9, whereas (-3)^2= 1/9. Because the problem seems to be similar to the first example, I don't understand why the 9 is positive...

I'm having trouble figuring out why -(2-8)^2/(-6)*2 equals 12. It simplifies down to -36/(-6)*2, at which point I would have to divide -36 by -6 to get 6, and then multiply that by 2 in order to get 12.... but the order of operations (PEMDAS) lists multiplication before division, in which case I ought to multiply first, which would give me -36/-12, for a final answer of 3... is there some caveat to that general order of operations rule that I missed somewhere?

I'm reading one of his short stories, and someone referred to a poem of his: "You remember that poem you wrote about going down to the beach and climbing down the cliff to the sand and seeing all those lovers down there and you were alone and wanted to get out fast, you got out so fast you left your shoes down there with them. It was a great poem about loneliness." I tried to google it, but had no luck. Anyone know which poem this is referring to?

I'm attempting to factor 3a^4 - 5a^2 + 2 ... the book gives the answer, but is otherwise completely useless. All I know is that it becomes (3a^2 - 2)(a^2 - 1) and finally (3a^2 - 2)(a - 1)(a + 1).

What are the steps to solving this? What the hell happens to the five?!? I understand how to factor, and can do 99% of the practice questions without a problem, but apparently i'm missing some step in this instance...

It's sort of a game of chance, where you drop a ball into a a slot and it falls down between two plastic/glass sheets and is knocked around 'randomly' by a series of little dowels that are suspended between the two sheets. The objective is usually to land the ball in a certain hole at the bottom of the sheets... thoughts?

It can't be more than 5 years old or so.. It's about a young CIA employee who is tasked with shadowing/informing on a senior CIA figure who, he is told, has become an agent the Russians... Any idea?

I realize that this would be easy to solve by substitution, but my book it says I can solve the equation a^3 + a^2 - a - 1 = 0 by factoring, and then gives lists the following in order to show how the calculation should progress...

1) a^3 + a^2 - a - 1 = 0

2) a^2(a + 1) - (a + 1) = 0

3) (a + 1)(a^2 - 1) = 0

4) (a + 1)(a + 1)(a - 1) = 0

5) a + 1 = 0 or a - 1 = 0

so a = 1 or -1

What was done to equation 2 to arrive at equation 3?

It seems like just learning the language over the course of a few years would be a relatively poor time investment... Would there be any oppurtunities to do graduate work at an accredited university in English in China? Preferably something like Political Science. Any help (especially web sites or school names) would be great.

Seeing as class rank is what impacts how favorable of an MOS you get, its something I'd like to know more about. I imagine it is a combination of physical conditioning, academic performance, esprit, etc.

Since I downgraded from Vista to XP my laptop's sound card has not been working...

Dell.com says describes the hardware as...

and the 'release title' is

This is for a Dell Inspiron 1521 which has been downgraded to Windows XP... any idea where to find the driver?

Do they patrol, clear buildings, and all of that, or do they play an administrative role?

I went back and looked at my order description, and the audio card is built in, and described as...

(Item no:313-4783) Integrated High Definition Audio 2.0

I still cant find a freakin driver... any ideas?

Now that I've downgraded, I'm having a lot of driver issues... My main concern is that I can't connect to the internet.

I have the 'Drivers and Utilities' disk that came with the laptop (Dell Inspiron 1521), but it wont install--it gives me a window saying:

1155:File E:\INSTALL\instmsi30.exe not found

When I go My Computer>Manage>Device Manager I see

Bace System Device

Base System Device

Ethernet Controller

Network Controller

PCI Device

SM Bus Controller &

Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" all still without drivers. I've got no Idea how to find out the names of these devices or where to begin to find drivers for them (the Dell site sucks)... Anybody know what I should do?

I've wanted to get Rosetta Stone (to learn French) for a long time, but $300 is way too expensive. Is there a free knock off or alternative that is effective that you've used or heard about?
