  • Teaching Latin in the UK...?

I am currently still a student, but I dream to be a Latin teacher soon, so I wonder... is Latin taught in UK schools? What type of schools include it in their syllabus? At what level is it taught? Is there a national curriculum for this subject? If there is, where can I find it online to see what it contains?

I'll apreciate any relevant pieces of information, including useful links! Thank you! :)

PS: And no, of course I don't live in the UK, otherwise I would know these things! :))

  • How do I make my Yahoo Messenger status look like a stanza?

Help! I want to quote some beutiful lines from a song in my Y! Messenger status, but the message I type appears as continuous text no matter how many times I press the "Enter" key!

I've seen stanzas in the status of my friends before, how did they do it? (they're not online now, or else I'd be asking them!)

    Thanks! :)

  • A sad song about impossible love - any suggestions?

Can somebody please recommend me a suitable song? :)

I don't want something about breaking up or feeling hurt, I want the idea of the song to be that the two were NEVER together and can NEVER be lovers, but there's still a lot of respect and friendship between them. Something bittersweet, with hopelessness and resemnation...

It can be any genre, in English, French, Romanian, Italian or Spanish... Preferably sung by a female vocalist...

    Help please! Thank you! :)

  • Single in a goup of couples - should I go with them?

Tomorrow night it's going to be the Museum Night in my city, with free entrance and a lot of shows and events all night long. My best friend and I decided to go long ago, but in the meantime she got together with another friend of ours, and so the group of people who will be going will be made up of three couples... and me.

I'm single and I think I won't feel very comfortable with them. They don't have any problem with it and even insisted that I should accompany them, but I have a bad feeling about this.

What would you do if you were me? I love museums and I'm sure it's going to be really interesting, but I'm afraid I'll feel awkward all night... :(

  • When citing an encyclopedia, do I need to mention the exact page?

I know that quotes from general books do require the page to be mentioned, but is the same necessary for a dictionary or encyclopedia? Or is it implied that the specific information would obviously be found under the discussed word?

  • Why are scholarships applied for after being admitted to a university? (UK)?

Why do I have to be admitted to a university before thinking of requesting a scholarschip?

How can I go through the admission process if I don't know whether of not I'll have the money to pay for my studies?!

What happens if I am admitted, but I fail to gain the scholarship I applied for? I can't afford to pay the fees, so is there the possibility to cancel my admission?

I'm not in this situation (yet!) but I'm thinking of becoming a Visiting Student at a UK university and I'm very confused by all these. If someone could answer my questions and make things clear, I'd be very grateful! Thank you!

  • Am I betraying him trust? (teacher/student)?

I have a problem related to my favourite teacher. He's young, intelligent, kind, caring, funny and really cultivated. We share a normal, healthy teacher/student relationship, although from time to time I think that some of the things we do go a little beyond that. For example, we "gossip" together during brakes (or even at the start of the class), we sometimes chat for hours on Yahoo! Messenger, we discuss his subject, movies, literature, and other people.... :), he even taught me to install a video game! :)) Also, with a group of students and another teacher, we used to hang aroung and play party games. In other words, if he were my age, we would be just good pals.

The problem is, I used to be in love with this teacher when I was in highschool and I would meet him twice a year in contests... Thankfully, it passed for a while. I'm almost sure he knew of my crush (puppy eyes are hard to miss!) and he was somehow distant back then (acting like any normal teacher would!)

  • Accusative and Infinitive - in ENGLISH and LATIN....?

An exercise I had in my General Linguistics exam yesterday left me wondering about the English Accusative and Infinitive contruction...

First of all, how did English end up with such a construction anyway? The Romance languages, the "rightful heirs" of Latin, don't have it (as far as I know of, anyway!) and English could in no way inherit it, so the only logical posibility is that English borrowed the Acc + Inf DIRECTLY from Latin...

Is my assumption right??? If not, how did it happen and when? I know I will probably learn this when I study the history of the English language next year, but I'm curious right now, so enlighten me a little, please! :)

    ------------------------

EDIT: Checked Wikipedia and it says that the Spanish grammar does include a similar construction.... Serves me right for making ungrounded generalizations!

But I still need to find out how come English has the Accusative and Infinitive.... :)

  • Can the word "GEEK" be used to describe a girl/woman?

First of all, English is not my native language, so please don't blame me for not understanding slang.

I know what a "geek" is. But every time I heard or read the word, it was in relation with a man or a boy. Wikipedia always uses "person" or "individual" to describe geeks, but all the examples it gives are of men and boys (last time I checked anyway). Is there something in the meaning that makes it inapropriate for a woman? Because there are many females to whom the term may apply. Think Velma in "Schooby Doo" for example!

And am I right to think that "geek" is a less offensive term than "nerd" and "dork"? Can someone please explain the differences?

So can a girl or a woman be called a geek? In other words, can I say *I* am a geek?

  • How can you insert a little heart symbol in Yahoo Answers?

Silly question, I know. But I've noticed some users here on Yahoo! Answers have tiny hearts next to their names or even in the text of their question/answer.

So... how do you guys do it? Just curious.

  • Is it just me or this whole Yahoo! Answers thing is really addictive?

I mean, look at me. I spend a lot of precious time answering random questions and even if I do find out lots of things, I still waste my time... Is it the same with you? Do you feel you're getting addicited to this site? :))

  • Does anyone like to play a party game called "Mafia"... ?

... it's also known as "Warewolf" or "Vampire" and it's really fun to play, though slightly addictive! :) Details can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_%28game%29

I played it a lot with a group from some Latin contest and I wander how popular it really is...

So... have you heard of this game? How do you like to play it? What additional characters do you usually include? Do you change the rules often (to include more characters, leave out the ones that prove to be inefficient etc)?

I'd love to hear how other people play it! :)

  • Ever heard of a poet named Mihai Eminescu?

This is NOT just some other request for homework help. I KNOW who he was. My high school was named after him and we celebrated him every year...

Sooo... do YOU know who he is? Don't search Wikipedia. Don't google him up. Just say if you heard of him or not.

(People from Romania are naturally supposed to skip this one, as I like to believe there is no literate Romanian person who hasn't heard about poor Eminescu...)

  • Pushkin poem about Ovid...!?

At my college, we're going to celebrate 2000 years from Ovid's exile and we thought about including poetry dedicated to him... The professor came up with a few poems dedicated to Ovid by poets from our country (Romania), but including some international poetry would definitely be great...

So I just found out that there's a poem written by Pushkin and named "To Ovid". Does anyone know a website where I could read the poem in an English translation? Or other poems about Ovid.... I searched but found nothing! :(

And does anyone know of any plans to celebrate Ovid in 2008?

  • Movie with dialogue in Latin?

A while ago my Latin teacher told me about an adaptation of Vergil's "Aeneid" in which the actors really got to speak in Latin! How awesome is that?! The problem is I don't know what the title of this movie was... :( I think my teacher mentioned it was an Italian movie and was released sometime in the '60s or the '70s...

Does anyone know what movie it was? If not, then have you at least ever heard of a movie in Latin (besides "The Passion of the Christ")? Do any of you know of any movie adaptation of the epic?

    Thank you! :)
