  • I've got a windows 7 os on a hard drive that was on a pentium 4 desktop, can it run on other processors?

I have this feeling that the os is hardware specific once installed so you can't just drop it into a new computer.

Does that mean that you can't use this OS with a newer system?

I was going to use EaseUS Disk Copy but I'm not sure if you have to put it back into the same computer.

I wanted to save this OS rather than buy a new one and put it into a new computer but I don't think that I can do it, should I just wipe it then?

  • Have you ever bummed around before, place to place?

How did you get by? What did you encounter? What did you have on you/would like to have had?

I am thinking about making this transition with a little bit of money maybe $1,000.00 or more and going.

I need change and I want to live life.

  • Why can't I save changes to apache2.conf I've never had this happen before?

I've been working on security related stuff on my vps and I ran into this weird problem where I am unable to save any changes to apache2.conf when editing via pico. I am root.

The two things I can think of:

I may have applied chmod go-rwx to apache2.conf

Or it could be the user/group which I had set to be www-data

The permission is currently set as

    -rw-r--r--

  • How cold does water get in an average house?

I live in New York, it's about to be winter time. I'm wondering as it gets colder outside and since our house isn't really heated, how cold will the water in the lines get? I'm not talking freezing but this does bring to mind, in order to avoid freezing...

I take cold showers (as cold as the handle goes) so I'm wondering if the water will get super cold due to winter or if the city/in order for the water to keep moving it has to be at certain temperature.

  • Should I selectively allow IP addresses on port 22 with a dynamic ip address?

I have a dynamic ip address as provided by my server provider, I don't aim to buy a static ip address anytime soon.

I'm setting up my iptables for a vps and the first thing was to explicitly allow all port 22 connections from a specific ip but if my ip changes say every 24 hours, won't I get locked out?

  • What do I need to connect an appliance to the web?

I have a couple of ideas... this was just a thought, I have a plant that will probably die due to the decreasing temperature. I'm not home for at least 12 hours and I usually turn everything off in my room. So I thought if I had an internet-accessible switch that could turn on heater/detecting what temperature it is in the room. I know it sounds nuts, just humor the idea.

I am aware of raspberry pi, I work on websites and minor android programming but I can't even picture how to put it together yet. I just know that that rapsberry pi has internet capability so maybe I can talk to it through ethernet or wifi.

  • Can you spoof an ip-address?

By this I mean can you pretend one ip-address is another ip-address?

I am following up on only allowing specific ip-addresses to access port 22 from this quote:

Often times it is simply easier to just configure your firewall to only allow access to 22 from specific hosts, as opposed to the whole Internet.

So if I were to do that, provided my dynamic ip-address stayed in range, can anyone pretend to be going through my ip-address or "bounce" off my ip-address and it would seem as if I was the one asking to get access?

  • What is it called when you move across two-axes at once on a 2 dimensional plane?

I'm specifically talking about a computer mouse pointer and how it crosses the screen pretty quickly.

I discovered that you can manually move the mouse using a keyboard and it goes per axis eg. up/down across, and it's very slow, I think literally it goes per pixel, as opposed to the very fast, "translational" I want to say, movements of the mouse pointer.

How would you mathematically define that not so much with an actual formula but a technical term related to crossing two different axes, like a tangent, or hypotenuse I guess...

  • How much more secure does a password become by adding two more additional characters?

specifically let's say the pattern follows the following:

5 letters, one being uppercase, 3 numbers, all three numbers are the same, the five letters come first, then the 3 numbers after.

That's not very secure is it?

If in terms of how long it would take to crack, there for each character, the value could be from 0 to what? more than 26+10 I imagine including odd symbols, and then you multiply that like a permutation but following the structure mentioned above with a password of 8 characters, how secure is that?

  • How to build a secure Debian server with Apache?

I'm really trying to get this right while I'm starting out. I've got quite a good list already from different sources, if you can add more or elaborate further, I would greatly appreciate it.

You are vulnerable to Click Jacking

You are advertising that you have php installed and the version is 5.4

You are advertising that you are using Apache Server and the version is 2.2.22

    Your apache version is outdated

You are advertising that you are on a Debian OS

You do not have the content-type-options set

You do not have xss protection set

    You have no content-security-policy

    httponly flag is not set

You have cross domain file inclusion

You have autocomplete enabled in password field

Is SSH on a standard port? If so why?

Disable password based auth in SSH

    Use key-based authentication

  • How is data transferred through router/WiFi?

With multiple devices being connected to a router/WiFi, I want to know ho w each device gets what they are searching for simultaneously. Is it like a wave where the separate data are added on to increase the amplitude of the wave? Or is it actually asynchronous but at such a high speed that you don t notice?

  • Sectional piping with built in impellers, solar powered.?

I'm briefly motivated to try and find solutions for example how to replicate our intricate plumbing system in America for other countries without the "intricate or expensive part"... I know nothing about this subject.

But one thing comes to mind right now, what about sectional piping that you slide together, each pipe is wrapped in solar tape/fabric (does this exist?) and inside each pipe is like our veins, able to pull water along.

Haven't drawn anything, I'll have to look at some concepts to come up with a basic design.

I'm talking basic switches that I will find in Radioshack like SPDT, DPDT or something like that.

  • Where is the least expensive place to live in California for a single guy?

I want to live in California eventually, I m a single guy, I may do this with a roommate that is a really good friend of mine.

I want to go to California due to the weather, I want it to be always warm.

My business/source of income hopefully will be through the web, I m a web developer and will soon be an application developer for android too. I intend to create my own services/API s and such... but right now my yearly expenses are between $10,000.00 to $12,000.00 I m not much of a flash guy.

From my brief research I have seen that rent averages or is at least $1,000.00/mo for a single person.

I have heard of living in not so great places like Orange County. I would like to be able to visit the beach, walk down Venice and such.

Most people tell me I m out of my mind. If you re from California / have experience, I d like to hear your thoughts.

  • How to buy a car for a single guy commuting to work?

After spending about $170.00 yesterday on combined cab fare, I realize I should actually get a car, I've been using the bus lately.

I don't know much about cars... credit is shot... budget probably looking at 2 grand or so with insurance...

    What should I do?

I'm not looking for fancy, but gas mileage and durability would be nice.

  • How to achieve natural happiness?

This is a pretty big and cliche question.

I fear that I am delusional.

I work a data-entry job, where I mindlessly type for hours on end, I hate it. It is my own fault for getting here, my own choices.

I am a web developer on the side, not an expert, I've been building websites, not hired though, tried to freelance.

While at work I want to make progress, get home and bust out some code. But I get home, and I don't feel this drive.

I get an idea, I think "This is great! I will succeed, make a lot of money!" Start to work on idea, realize it's dumb, feel sad again.

I don't know how to feel "happy" from "progress". What is progress?

I make money, but I pay bills and it's dumb for me to stress out over paying say $60.00 for cab fare when I just easily pay $400.00 for student loans... that doesn't make sense.

How can I feel happy? Abraham Maslow's Pyramid balance... I don't have many friends, I don't get laid. I am scared about life, having money, being happy. Not constantly worrying.

I want to feel competent and confident in myself. At ease with life. Live in the moment.

Yeap a lot of verbal diarrhea right there.

  • Can swiping a credit card through square store data?

I read that it is "engineered not to store data" so this question isn't entirely directed at square...

I'm saying, isn't it possible since you swiped the data that the phone can store the information, intercept the information?

It would only be impossible if the card was never swiped assuming no nfc/rfid card or visually getting numbers.

  • When will shopping carts follow us in stores?

Scan a QR code on a cart with your phone, cart gets your phone's information and follows you around in the store. Being aware of people, stationary objects, and other carts. Come on!!! Ha-ha I just saw a golf caddy that follows you around... I sometimes ghost ride shopping carts around stores seeing how this would work out, would be boss.

  • Is there a reason people don't have keyboards with built in credit card swipers?

I'm not asking if the technology exists, it does.

I just bought an ergonomic keyboard for $12.00 so I imagine the cost would be extra to have a credit card reader built in. There is also the potential problem of people getting your credit card information "faster" from swiping as opposed to keys... but I don't know, it seems "archaic" to type in credit card numbers manually when you buy things online.
