damp soil under floor boards?
We have recently bought a Victorian house. The front room smells very musty so we took out carpet and underneath was a chipboard tongue and groove floor. Smashing some of this up made it pretty evident the smell was coming from under the floor. There is about 8" of free space and then damp soil. No signs of rot and the floor joists (from what we can see look good and fairly new). The air brick isn't blocked but there is only one in that room so we might put in some more. But other than that we are fresh out of ideas. PLEASE someone help me. I'm desperate to start using that room. I don't think there is a leaking pipe underneath. The front garden does slope down (though well below air brick and dpc) and we are mid terrace so have nowhere for the surface water from the garden to drain to anyway.
Is there anything we can put on top of the soil to stop smell and damp? I don't think we can concrete as pipes run under the floor.
Thanks in advance,

I've just discovered it and waiting for hubby to get home after his shift. I've selected all the names I like (I hope he chooses some of them too!!). Seems like a great idea but would love to hear some success stories!

7 AnswersNewborn & Baby1 decade agointroducing a routine to a 3 month old....tips please...?
Hi, I think my little 3 month old son would really benefit from a routine. He has a bed time routine, I.e. bath, story and final feed, but he still wakes up a lot in the night (not to any pattern) and his naps are all over the place during the day (he normally gets overtired and is impossible to get to sleep). He is also fed on demand which I absolutely don't mind but I think again he would benefit on a more structured feeding routine.
I'd like to hear from parents who went from the situation I'm in into a routine, please tell me how me how you did it.
Thanks in advanced.

5 AnswersNewborn & Baby1 decade agobreastfeeding mothers who tried fenugreek.... did it really increase your milk supply?
My 2 month old tends to tug at my nipples in the evenings and gets very frustrated. I think I run out of milk by the end of the day. Has anyone experienced similar to this and then taken fenugreek with success?
What form did you take it (e.g. pill, tea)?

8 AnswersNewborn & Baby1 decade ago7 week old baby, yellow phlegm - please help?
Hi, my 7 week old coughed earlier today on his play mat (about 30 mins or less after eating - solely breast fed). it was only about mild 3 coughs but I still picked him up and sat him upright. about 10 mins later he was then a little sick and in the sick (white as normal) there was some sticky yellow stringy mucus/phlegm. I also noticed a bit last night and becuase it has been twice now I have a doctors appointment but... has anyone else experienced this and can suggest what it is. Do you think it is from the lungs or from his tummy?
I would like to go to the drs armed with a suggestion as to what it could be,
thanks.
2 AnswersNewborn & Baby1 decade ago7 week old baby, waking every hour at night for a 4 minute feed before falling back to sleep?
Hi, my 7 week old is solely breast fed. He eats every 2/3 hours during the day and otherwise is mostly asleep with 45 mins here and there of awake time. However at night, he wakes every hour (or sometimes half hour) for a feed and then promptly falls asleep 4 mins into feed (hence waking up so soon after as not a full belly).
I know I need to keep him awake to eat at night but it's impossible, he just keeps falling asleep no matter what I do.
Why can he not feed at night like he does in the day? Is there anyway to break this cycle?
Thanks in advance,

Does anyone own the Tomy Sensor Pad Baby Monitor TSP500? If so, would you recommend it?
2 AnswersNewborn & Baby1 decade agoShould it be illegal for firefighters to go on strike?
Selecting bonfire night for a strike is giving the public a simple message: they don't care about the public's safety and are selecting the most dangerous day of the year to prove their point. If people die because they are on strike.... I just can't believe it.
11 AnswersCurrent Events1 decade ago2 week old baby.... problem with wind and feel bubbles under his skin?
I'm having problems winding my 2 week old and often feel bubbles of gas moving in his tummy (and can feel it in his lower back). I try to wind him after feeding using various techniques (over shoulder, sitting up, rubbing, patting etc) but he never burps, spits up. He doesn't cry about wind but he looks really uncomfortable and I wish I could relieve the gas.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so, any tips to make my little one more comfortable?
Thanks in advance.

2 AnswersPregnancy1 decade agowhich baby boy name should i pick.....?
We have 2 names we like (both go with our surname) which are:
Alexander (Alex)
Or
Duncan.
Alex is very common in UK and I'm worried there will be loads in his class. Duncan is not even in top 100. My husband and I like it a lot but worried we are mad as no one else is using it.
Honest opinions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
26 AnswersBaby Names1 decade agowhy is mamas & papas so awful?
Their customer service takes hours to get through to and it is an expensive 0845 number. And often they just hang up in you. And the quality of their goods (cots / buggies) is so poor. And not cheap. Argh. My advice - avoid them.
2 AnswersOther - Pregnancy & Parenting1 decade agoMaternity sleeping pillow - UK?
Hi, I am 20 weeks pregnant and already quite uncomfortable when I sleep so thinking of buying a maternity pillow. Can anyone recommend where I should get one from in the UK and what shape I should get?
I must add I am 5'10 tall - if that makes any difference?
Thanks :)
6 AnswersPregnancy1 decade agoI'm 11 weeks pregnant and want to avoid stretch marks.... what works best?
Hi, I'm currently 11 weeks pregnant and starting to see the beginning of a bulge! I know stretch marks are inevitable (and i'm ok with them as i know they are a "scar of honour" etc) but obviously i'd like to minimise them as much as i can. What have people used that have prevent stretch marks? I have some Bio Oil - is this any good?
Thanks so much in advance.
18 AnswersPregnancy1 decade agoMorning sickness started at 6 weeks (I'm now at 9). When will it end?
Hi, I'd like to hear from those whose morning sickness started at 6 weeks to tell me when it stopped for them. I need so hope as this is unbearable. I am not expecting twins so please don't scare me with sickness stories from twin pregnancy (though i have much respect for you if you did).
