I work as a software developer. I have a long term mission to develop strong AI that will pass the Turing Test. I am religious. I strongly believe that we should teach logic classes in public schools. I like to fiddle with Mathematics.

  • What was learned by the newly discovered quantum "paradox"?

This new experiment seems to indicate that an observer becomes quantumly entangled with their experiment in a way that makes one of the following assumptions not true:

    1. Single Consistent Reality - When someone makes an observation, what they observed actually happened.

    2. Free will - People's choices aren't pre-determined.

    3. Locality - When I make a choice in one place, it can't instantly affect events in remote locations faster than light speed.

  • Best way to build from nothing?

You are given $2,000, your ID and the clothes on your back and dropped off in Denver.  Nothing else, no cell phone, no other clothes, no food.  You are not allowed to contact any family or friends.  You are not allowed to have a credit card or take out any loans.  You can have a visa debit card, but you'll need to go get one.

The goal is to make as much money as possible within one year.  What would you do?  Go!

  • Help with NPN Transistor Diagram?

I am learning about electronics. There is a diagram (Diagram 'B') at http://www.technologystudent.com/elec1/transis1.ht...

I understand how the transistor is turning on the LED. I get that you need the 1K resistor before the base of the transistor or it will fry the transistor. I don't get why there is a strait connection between the switch and the 0v (with the other 1K resistor between them). Why not have the only connection to the 0v be to the emitter of the transistor?

Also, I am having a hard time understanding how many ohms my resistors should be. Why did they pick the ones they did on that diagram?

  • Write an equation for 1 + 11 + 111 + 1111 ...?

    f(n) = 1 + 11 + 111 + 1111 + ... where n is the number of 1's in the last term.

Write an equation for f(n) that doesn't use Epsilon or a series of terms. in your answer.

  • What is the best way to make a positive impact on the world?

Anytime I talk about societal problems, I try to think about possible solutions, and I always trace it back to the same thing.

If people in power had the opportunity, skills and power to make better decisions, then society would improve. It seems the way to do that is through targeted education. Teach manditory classes in high schools to teach people how to make informed, intelligent decisions. Besides a Decision Making class, I would also like to see manditory classes in Critical Thinking / Logic, Relationships, Parenting, Finance, Communications, and General Job Skills.

What is the best way I can influience high schools / middle schools to teach these classes, or is there a better way to make a positive impact on the world?

  • How to build a DVD library?

I have purchased approximately 150 DVDs that are on a shelf that is now full. I've setup a computer with Vista's media center edition software attached to a projector. I'd really like to rip the DVDs to a large network drive and then I can put my DVDs in a box somewhere so they don't take up so much space. I want software that will rip the DVD into a format that I won't lose video or surround sound quality, and is super easy to access through media center, ideally from video library from the menu. I'd also like to do the same thing with my Blu-Ray disc in the future. What software should I buy? How does it work?

  • Double slit experiment. Why?

In the double slit experiment, what really boggles my mind is that when both slits are open, there is an area of the screen where electrons rarely hit, which happens to correspond to the area where the wave function would interfere, hence wave particle duality. Did the electron start out as a wave and become a particle? Why didn't the wave become a particle as soon as it passed the barrier with the slits? Someone please explain what is happening physically, not mathimatically? And please don't throw in particle consciousness, or alternate dimensions.

  • How do you want to improve the world?

    Here is my thought.

    1. The problems in the world that people have control over, are caused because of people's actions or lack thereof.

    2. Actions are determined by choices.

    3. If we improve people's choices, the actions and outcome will improve.

    4. There are at least two things that will improve choices, better thinking skills and better intended outcomes.

    5. Improving thinking skills can be achieved by teaching critical thinking.

    6. In order to teach critical thinking to everyone, it should be a mandatory class in High Schools.

So, I want to improve the world through making critical thinking classes mandatory in High Schools. I recognize that there is already an emphasis on teaching critical thinking in other subject, but I don't feel that it is enough. It should be it's own class.

To determine how much and what ways we should teach every class in schools, we should find a way to estimate the outcome of various methods and use it to find the proper balance.

I will query better intended outcomes in a different question.

  • What is the best HD Projector for under $2000?

  • Is it moral and ethical to start a large scale breading program?

The goal would be to improve the human race through selective breading. Subjects that were healthy, kind, intelligent, motivated and attractive would be paid large amounts of money to have many children. The children would be raised in a healthy family environment. What are some of the pros and cons to this approach?

  • Do you think the world would be better if we had a regulated meritocratic government?

The problem with a democratic republic is that the general public don't make informed rational decisions, and the representatives care more about their own political interests than the short and long term interests of society.

  • I think therefore I am?

Is this equivalent to "I think, therefore I exist?" Is this something we can know to be true? Why? Is there anything else we can know to be true? If no, what?, If yes, why?
