1 AnswerHigher Education (University +)8 years agoWhat do you think of my college application essay?
It's for Princeton and the prompt is:Using a favorite quotation from an essay or book you have read in the last three years as a starting point, tell us about an event or experience that helped you define one of your values or changed how you approach the world. Please write the quotation, title, and author at the beginning of your essay.
Here's my essay. Tell me if you think it's awkwardly worded, cynical, arrogant, or probably not what they're looking for. Please be as critical as possible but give me actual suggestions on improving it.
“She had not a thought in her head that was not a slogan, and there was no imbecility, absolutely none, that she was not capable of swallowing if the Party handed it out to her.”
-George Orwell, 1984
This is a description of Winston’s ex-wife, Katherine who I used to resemble quite a bit. That changed this spring, when I had the privilege of visiting our great nation’s capitol with my favorite teacher and some of my very best friends. What I experienced there taught me more than an entire year of American History class.
I had an opportunity to better understand the political issues of today and create my own opinions. In workshops and even while visiting monuments we discussed the issues such as Fourth Amendment and ObamaCare, (without lying swearing and insulting each other). Although I’ve always known more about politics than most of my classmates, it was my first time hearing from unbiased and reliable sources. My opinion had simply been my parents’ opinion and I had accepted it without any doubt or question. The majority of people I know either had no opinion or blindly followed one party or the other. In workshops and even while visiting monuments we discussed the issues such as Fourth Amendment and ObamaCare, (without lying swearing and insulting each other). I also saw a professional debate and participated in a mock-Congress as a lobbyist. I can now proudly say that I’m moderately liberal on most issues, support as much personal freedom as possible, and believe both parties are equally corrupt.
The flight there was my first time on an airplane since 9/11. As you can imagine, I was bothered by the endless security checks and two hour long wait between arriving at the airport and boarding the plane. When I mentioned this to my teacher, he said that it was an issue of “freedom versus security” and Americans had opted for security since 9/11. I then understood that concept better than I ever had in class and realized I would choose security too. Later that night, we visited the White House lawn. It didn’t look nearly as huge and overpowering as it had in photographs and I felt like my actions could someday make a difference there. Before we visited Capitol Hill, my teacher said “We might not get to meet our congressmen but we will be able to talk to their assistants and usually they know more about the issues” An hour later, we met Senator Kyl’s aid who answered about 70% of our questions with “I’m not sure what he thinks; you should email him” Now I have less faith in the competence of our elected officials; the ubiquitous jokes and complaints about the inefficiency of our political system are understatements, not exaggerations. I hope I can someday change that, whether it’s as a part of my career or simply through voting.
Many people I know, both Democrats and Republicans, still remind me of Katherine. It’s a good thing there are two parties not one but blind following of any party is dangerous even in a free country like the United States.

Es mala porque español es mi seguno idoma.
(Debo llamarla A Nick o Para Nick?????)
Mi corazón esta roto
¿Qué fue mi error?
De este desierto remoto
Realizo la verdad con horror
Te amaba de verdad
Mientras tu amor era engaño
Es una atrocidad
Pero no es extraño
Cómo podia creerte
No soy ingenua nunca más
Anque no quiero conocerte
Gracias... por enseñarme lo que harán otros

Criticize it as much as you want. I know it sucks. I'm also considering saying demás at the end insted of otros but would that sound awkward.
