  • What are some fun things to do in Edinburgh, Scotland?

I'm visiting Scotland next week, and am quite excited. I very much like Scottish history, however what are some suggested things to do while visiting (I will only be in Edinburgh for two days and can only use public transportation).

Also, I would like to pick up a Scottish National football jersey while there. Where can I purchase one? Also, I very much like electronic music, and it is to my understanding that electronic music is more popular in the UK than in the US. What is a good store in Edinburgh where I might purchase some CDs of that genre?

One last thing, I myself am a bit Scottish, will I be able to find out anything about my clan (Kennedy) while I am there?

    Thanks!

  • What should my diet be while running?

I have begun training with my school's cross country team, it is one of our schools best sports, and they train really hard for it. Most of the guys on the team are stick thin. I will also be doing weight training this summer (continuing what I've done during the year) in an attempt to continue gaining upper body strength.

Will I be able to decrease my body fat (from the running) but still build my upper body strength? Should I continue to eat foods high in protein, so as to not lose muscle?

I am afraid that the running will cancel out my weight training. Will it? If not, what should my diet consist of?

    Thanks

  • Will I be able to exercise while in Europe?

Will I be able to exercise while in Europe?

At the end of the month, I will be visiting Belgium (brussels, and leuven), Great Britain (London), and Germany (Frankfurt). However, for the cross country team, I am required to remain in shape. Is it uncommon for people to go out jogging? Are there any places for me to jog in the cities where I will be visiting? I appreciate your help

  • Why do the children of the impoverished act this way?

I do not condone this action nor commit hatred to the poor, I am however trying to find the root cause of this rather curious behavior

Why is it that most of the students from low income families, A: stand right outside the door of the classroom until the bell rings, or more commonly, wait 5 minutes or more after the bell rings to come in, even if they do not have anything of particular importance to do?

At first I thought such behavior was isolated to certain ethnic groups, but then realized, that not only was such a thought racist, I observed that even kids of different races, who are raised in impoverished homes, may act in just the same manner as their counterparts amongst other racial groups. My current thesis is that these students have parents that never taught them to respect authority because A- the parents neglect the children (not to say that those of high income don't neglect) or B- because their parents are working so hard to make ends meet, that they have hardly the time to spend with their children.

Is it simply spite the authority of the I am nearing the end of my high second year of high school, and am yet still stumped as to these actions.

What are your thoughts? I say again, while I do not condone nor excuse this behavior, I can yet see why these students act this way. I am simply trying to find the truth behind all of this.

    Thanks

I think school is a privilage, and think that I should dress professionally for it. I have a bunch of different polos. Is it okay to wear them every day ( I also look pretty good in them) as long as I am wearing different ones? Tell me what you think!

  • Children of Illegal Aliens in the United States?

I go to a school that has a particularly large amount of immigrants from latin America, more specifically, the majority are of Mexican descent.

Most of said immigrants live in poverty, and receive much assistance from the school (reduced price lunches, etc.). My question is, because schools are required to serve students, legal or not, how much money is spent annually on aid for them? Is it a large burden on the school, as, those who are not citizens, do not necessarily pay the same taxes as those who are legal?

Also, there is a fair number of students whose parents are illegal, but they themselves are legal. Does this make the student eligible to receive anything more than if they were, as their parents, illegal?

    I would appreciate sources

    Thanks,

  • Military Schools and Colleges?

I have been looking into Army ROTC (particularly Wheaton College) programs as of late. I still have a while to go but I have a few questions.

Whats the difference between going to ROTC at a non-military school vs. going somewhere like West Point or the Citadel? Do the official military academies have better training? Do graduates of military academies have more opportunity for advancement during their military career?

I am looking towards a social sciences degree- specifically psychology, Political Science, or International relations. Do military colleges award liberal art degrees?

Also, is the citadel specifically an Army school? Or do other services go as well? If the latter is true, which has the most predominant population?

    I appreciate any help

  • How much protein should I be eating when lifting?

I am sixteen, 5'8 of slender build and 151 lbs. I've been lifting weights and running lately, I usually lift 3 days a week, every other day, while on the off days I running (however some weeks I have been exercising 3 times a week doing both running and lifting on the same day, resting on the off days, is that bad?)

Anyway, how much protein should I have in my diet? Is cheese a good source of protein? How soon should I eat protein after I lift? If I don't eat any protein within the hour, will all my work be for naught?

    Thanks,

  • Has the US Army's role in offensive operations increased or decreased since its creation?

I have been reading about the recent history of our armed forces, and am particularly interested in how the different branches overlap and work together.

It seems as if the army once held a more prominent role in offensives than it does now. Is this true? If so, why? If not, how do they decide how to alternate between the Marine Corps conducting offensives and the Army?

  • How can I avoid straining my calf?

It all started several weeks ago, when I ran outside for about a mile, I got far and at the end (despite it being cold out) I got the bright idea to sprint, thus I strained my calf.

However, several weeks later, I am now running inside (in an uncomfortably humid gym), and have been doing fairly well, until today- I ran another mile, and kept the same pace the whole time, and on the final lap, I strained my calf. It is not so bad that I cannot walk, however, it still worries me... I stretched my calves before and after running, but to no avail (perhaps I simply didn't stretch enough), also, I took some ibuprofen to ease the swelling, and have been icing it.

Can someone tell me what kind of stretches to do to best stretch my calves (links to directions would be great) and any other advice on how to avoid straining my cavles in the future would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks!

  • Has the US actually benefitted from the Iraq war?

I hear a lot of people claiming that the United States went into Iraq for oil. I am not saying that I agree or disagree, however I would like to ask the following question:

Are there any oil companies still in the US? If so, have they benefitted from the war? Have they brought more oil to the US?

    PLEASE cite your sources!

  • Why is the training for an infantrymen in the Marines longer than that of the Army?

Now, I am only comparing the combat arms MOSs of both branches. It seems as if the marines get longer training for just about everything. Why does the army's training (for combat MOS) consist of a period of 14 weeks (for infantry) and 16 weeks (for Cavalry Scouts), whilst their Marine counterparts go through 12 weeks of Basic training, and then (for those other than infantry) go through another 4 weeks of combat training, and then go to their AIT?

Anyway, what I am asking is, why is the combat arms training of the Army so much shorter than that of the Corps?

I understand that the army doesn't train the non-combatants as much as the army, but shouldn't the combat arms training in the army be just as long as that of the Marines?

I am looking into enlistment in the military (specifically the army), I do not mean to start a branch rivalry thing here, and I mean no disrespect to either branch.

  • Does the Army participate in offensives in Afghanistan?

  • What type of warfare is being employed in Afghanistan?

I am interested in military history, and recently came to the realization that I know only a miniscule amount about Afghanistan. How is the war being fought?

Is it completely unconventional? Or is it semi-conventional, as in, when the Taliban do choose to attack, are there fixed battle lines, and does it become a fight similar to the Ia Drang Valley in Vietnam?

What are the roles of Commissioned Officers on the battlefield (specifically in the combat arms roles of the Army and Marine Corps)?

Also, are soldiers being used for the specific roles they were trained to do? For example, are airborne troops still parachuted into territory? Or are they all playing the role of infantry? (forgive me, as, I know EXTREMELY little about the war)

One final question, what role are the Army Cavalry Scouts playing right now?

    God bless our troops

It is to my understanding that they no longer do air assault, despite being the pioneers of that type of warfare. If that is true, why do they no longer perform air assault? What do they consist of in terms of MOS's and what not?
