I'm a Computer Science major in college, I work part-time in the college's helpdesk / Technical Support Services depertment working on their computers and love every minute of it. I manage wireless networks at my parents' house (neighborhood with heavy interference) and where I'm staying in college (rural, no interference). I also have hobbies with electronics, model railroading, radio scanning, photography, and tweaking my computers.

  • Vista wired+wireless on different networks?

I'm not sure what to do for this...I need to be on 2 networks at once to access different resources. Problem is, when I connect to a wired connecton, Vista seems to ignore the wireless even though it's still connected. Network bridge is out of the question, that causes network security software to block everything.

First network is wireless, that has internet access but is too slow to run X11 for Unix Gnome sessions.

Second network is wired, that works great for X11 (different host) but has no internet.

How can I keep the internet working when I plug in wired?

  • make motion-sensor light stay on?

How can I make a motion-sensor light stay on?

In our open computer lab, the lights are on motion-sensors to save power. The problem is the sensors are in a far corner by the door, and don't "see" the people. Since it's a computer lab everyone is sitting still, working away and every 10 minutes the lights go out until someone walks over and waves in front of the sensor.

    What triggers these? Heat? Infrared-light?

There has to be a way of tricking it that someone is there.

  • Sharp LCD hard reset? TV won't respond to commands...?

We have a Sharp 16SB15U LCD and someone pressed a bunch of unknown buttons on the menu -- now it just displays a blank screen.

How do I hard-reset this TV to the factory settings if it doesn't respond to any commands (including menu)???

  • Who to contact for support -- "Creative I/O" PCI Serial ATA Host Controller Card?

I have a PCI SATA card that no longer boots. The card kept crashing under heavy load so I tried to flash it's BIOS - and it failed part way through.

I've tried a number of recovery tips I found, but none of them have helped because it has "lost" all it's data (no date, chip, type, etc.)

I don't see any info about contacting support on the box or CD, it didn't come with any directions. I can't find a website for them either. Can anyone help me contact their technical support???

  • FiOS Movies On Demand -- switch TVs without double-billing?

I've found conflicting information on this...maybe someong has experience to clarify.

Tonight, we ordered "Bolt" from Video On Demand. We started watching it in one room but as it got later we wanted to go to bed and finish watching it there -- but it wanted us to "buy" it a second time!

I've read several forums saying that it'll show a charge but not bill, yet I'm afraid to try this, with my luck I'd be billed another time for every box and again every subsequent switch.

    This says it's impossable.

    http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/FiOSTV/Gu...

The automated "Ask Verizon" virtual support said it was possable by calling tech support and having it "activated" on other boxes. Then it linked to the above question.

    I'm confused.

I finally re-wired things enough to do what I wanted tonight but I shouldn't have to re-wire the house every time we watch a movie, nor should I be "tied" down to the bed/chair/etc where the TV is that I started watching on. I would have expected now that they offer Multi-Room DVR their boxes should be able to "talk" to each other and figure out what I ordered, and where I watched it -- even if they are only the SD boxes. I know the programming is simple, in about 20 minutes, I wrote computer software to monitor the STBs and everything else on our home network, and notify me when one of them drops offline or something new comes online. For this feature, it would just be a matter of sending a query to each box asking if the selected movie has been purchased, or has a resume bookmark associated with it. Then, either prompting to resume playback or asking to purchase for the first time if it's expired or hasn't yet been purchased on another box.

How hard is it to add Daytime Running Lights?

We have a 2001 Ford Taurus and 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis and would like to add Daytime Running Lights to them. I've found directions for disabling them but nothing about how (or if) it's possible to add this feature.

  • Where can I find "SYMANTEC ANTIVIRUS 10.2 PERSONAL COMPUTERS FOR VISTA"?

Sorry for upper case, I'm copy/pasting from the directions I have. I'm told that for working at home we must have "SYMANTEC ANTIVIRUS 10.2 PERSONAL COMPUTERS FOR VISTA" but I can't figure out what software that is, or where it comes from. I have Notron Internet Security 2009 which is supposedly "too new" to be compatible with their system.

Is there another name for this program?

  • Passing out during blood tests?

How do you keep from passing out during blood tests? I have another today for my physical (last one was several years ago) and have to get a blood test along with it :/

I absolutely hate needles, it doesn't hurt as much as it's the un-natural thought of this thing jabbing into you and sucking stuff out...did I mention I hate needles?

Last time it was going well and the next thing I remember is several people holding me in the chair asking if I was ok and telling me it was almost done. Tried it laying down once but they had bad luck finding a vein and it hurt like nothing I'd felt before. I can't look at them or the needle while it's being done or I'm afraid of what I might do.

Suggestions? I was considering bringing my mp3 player along but not sure if that would make it better or worse...

  • How to clean blanket used for our dog?

We have a heavy blanket that our dog sits on in the car (to protect the seats) but it's beginning to smell like a dog.

How can we wash or clean it? It's too large for a home washing machine and the laundramat has signs saying no pet blankets/beds/etc.

  • How to edit DVD video?

My father taped my graduation with his miniDVD video camera, but it takes up 3 discs and has some parts that need editing (e.g. someone walking in front of the camera). We want to process it into one normal DVD that we can give to friends and family.

How can I convert the DVDs into high-quality editable video (MPEG?) so I can manipulate and splice them?

I have some software but can't find a way to do this:

HP Roxio Creater Premier 9 + Video Editor

    VLC Media Player

I do have a TV tuner I could capture from but I'd rather not lose quality converting digital to analog back to digital.

Suggestions? I need to do it with what I have, or FREE software. The disc has a VOB file that will play in VLC but all my attempts to transcode it have failed, I lose audio, video, or both.when I try to import the video file.

  • Buying some 1TB drives for RAID1?

I'm looking for two 1TB drives to put in RAID1 for a home file-server. I've searched on CDW, CompUSA, and NewEgg but the more I read the less I understand.

    Question 1:

I've read a lot of reviews on NewEgg and it seems like there's a very high number of DOA drives. Anyone had experience with this? Is it the drives or something about how NewEgg is handling them?

    Question 2:

I've been looking at WesternDigital drives, I found 3 1TB drives for different prices and different specs. I can't figure out what's different other than the buffer - so I don't understand why the 32MB buffer drive costs less than an 8MB buffer? What's up with that?

    32MB Buffer $92 http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=...

    16MB Buffer $99 http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=...

    8MB Buffer $93 http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=...

    Question 3:

I'm going to use the drives in RAID1, I've read pros and cons to getting the same brand. Should I get 2 different brands with similar specs? Or the same? If I get 2 of the same drive, is there a danger of a "bad batch"?

  • 06 Sonata timing chain tensioner?

We have an 06 Hyundai Sonata that has been diagnosed with a defective timing chain tensioner, it's making very loud grinding/rattling for about 10 seconds when the engine starts.

The warranty doesn't run out until late September, and the dealer said it needs to be fixed but we can drive it until then.

Is there any problem with waiting to get it replaced? Is there any chance it could get worse or cause engine damage? Or could delays void the warranty if another problem occurs?

  • What's the temperature range for an AMD Duron 1.6GHz processor?

I'm trying to minimize noise by removing/disconnecting/undervolting cooing fans, but I don't know what the specs are for this processor. I don't know anything more about it, I got the motherboard/processor for free from a friend.

What's the normal operating temperature range?

What's the maximum temp (aka when should it power-off)?

Any other details would be usefull, the only thing I know is it's been running about 38-46C when I look...but I don't know if this is good, bad, or somewhere inbetween.

  • Engine braking with an automatic -- good or bad?

I've had people tell me that you should never ever downshift to use "engine braking" on an automatic because it will shorten the life of the engine and transmission - to always use the breaks.

Then, I've also heard it's better on long, steep hills to downshift and use engine braking to prevent the brakes from overheating, failing, or catching fire.

What is better? Or are they both wrong?

  • broke off driver's side mirror cover 06 Sonata?

I was in a hurry this morning and hit the side of my garage and borke off the driver side mirror cover. The power-mirrors still work perfectly, it didn't even mess up the adjustments.

Is it possible to replace the mirror-cover? Or do I have to go to the dealer and get the whole mirror assymbly replaced?

I can see some screws holding the plastic "studs" where the cover sheered off, I'm just not sure how to get to all of them if - even if I got the parts. There appears to be at least 1 coming from the inside of the door, through to the outside, and a few more that would be behind the "glass" on the mirror frame/mechanism itself.

If I do have to go to the dealer, how much would this run to fix?

  • Glasses fell on cement sidewalk -- scratched?

The other day, I was in a hurry and put my glasses "on top of my head" for a moment. Long sory short, I bent over and they fell off and landed face-down on the cement sidewalk - and got some tiny scratches - like a "scuff" on both lenses.

What can I do about this? It's not very big, but enough that it's destracting when I drive.

Would that be covered by some sort of warranty? Should the "anti-scratch" have prevented it? Will they have to be replaced?

They didn't slide along the ground, but just fell and bounced once, leaving a few tiny spots (like scratches) about 1/32" or less in diameter on each lens. I know they're supposed to have anti-scratch, UV, anti-glare, etc. on the lenses and I know they aren't real glass but some sort of plastic or composite.

  • Windows Domain -- check when does my password expire?

At work, we use a domain login for the network that, supposedly, makes us change our password every 30 days.

How can I check and see the number of days remaining? I think it should be coming up soon but it's not giving me any warnings, notices, etc. like I expected this past week.

The PC I'm using runs Vista, but I can get on an XP machine if neccecary.
